My contribution to the transfer forum, Diego of Wolfsburg that is. I very much like this guy. Don't know about his contract situation but he's an amazing freekick taker, and still relatively young at 26. Can pick out good passes etc.

Excellent at Bremen. Took the step up, failed, went back to Germany with his tail between his legs, hated at Wolfsburg and they want rid.

Already got a problematic Brazilian in midfield. Would be suicide.

He's being shipped out I believe after a poor season, and when I say shipped out I mean publicly flogged and if he doesn't leave he'll sit in the stands/play in reserves next season.

Think £10m has been quoted iirc

Was a massive failure at Juventus, has never recaptured the early promise that he showed.

On 5 February 2011, Diego won a penalty for Wolfsburg. Diego took the ball from designated spot-kick taker Patrick Helmes and then hit the woodwork 10 minutes from time. Wolfsburg later lost the match by one goal and Wolfsburg's furious manager fined him €100,000 (£86,000) for failing to follow instructions. He was also informed that he will be removed from the first team for Wolfsburg’s upcoming game against Hamburg. He once again got in trouble with the management of Wolfsburg, on 14th May before a crucial relegation game against Hoffenheim left the hotel in which the team was staying, he was informed he would not be starting the game. This left Wolfsburg with only 6 players on the bench for the game that would determine whether they would play another season in the German Bundesliga. Wolfsburg went on to win the game 3–1 without Diego ensuring another top flight season for the club.

Yeah, he sounds like a bit of a ****

Undoubtedly, however, many of ours would probably be cocks elsewhere. Given the right management any player can be tamed.

Haven't seen enough of him on a consistent basis to justify praising or criticising him but from what i have seen, he thrives when the team is built around him (big fish, small pond) and he has the freedom (and space) to express himself afforded to him.

When he took the step up to Juventus, he couldn't deliver (big fish, big'ish pond). Has a attitude when dropped or rotated and prefers to play where Rooney thrives.

All the makings of NO NO NO! But we've been proven wrong countless times before...

It's not just his attitude it's his ability to make use of his talent at the top level too.

There's a reason he's played less than 15 competitive games for Brazil.

I don't follow the German League, but how the hell do a side that won the league (I think?) only two seasons ago end up in a relegation dog-fight?

Appointing Steve McClaren was mistake number one. Then you consider that Dzeko and Barzagli left halfway through the season, Misimovic left in the summer and Grafite never being able to reach the same level...that's the core of their team ripped out.

Stevo and selling your best players...

He's a headcase who has the problem of no confidence on the pitch, but all the confidence off it. He lost his way at Juve and has never found himself since...

Simon Kjær also has a pretty torrid time after being signed.

Interesting... So how as Kjaer fared since his sideways move to Wolfsburg? Wonder if he will start to be linked with other clubs again, soon.

Surely he's regretting it now considering Palermo are a half-decent side. I guess that's with the power of hindsight though.

Felix Magath confirmed that Diego is bound to leave Wolfsburg this summer.
Liverpool are ready to offer Brazilian midfielder Diego an escape route out of Werder Bremen. Diego was handed a huge fine this week for storming out of the team hotel before the last game of the season.
Thought to be 500,000 Euros - highest Bundeslga fine ever - and Wolfsburg are asking for not more than 10m Euros for the Brazilian.

I wonder. He started at Juventus like a house on fire. Then isneta dof holding the fire, like the rest of the Juventus new signings that year got burend with it and has been a smouldering ember ever since.

Yes. He isn't the best Brazil has in his position.

When you have people like Jadson, Elano, Thiago Neves, Coutinho, Carlos Eduardo, Fernandinho all making appearances in recent times as well as people like Julio Baptista and Richardinho getting picked ahead of him in previous times...I think it's more than him just not being as good as Ronaldinho and Kaka. Maybe he's just not that good. Definitely not the 'new Scholes'.

Indeed. But you know how it is with Brazil though. They give you like 2 chances. Don't light up things and they move on to the next one. What hurt him the most internationally is that when he was playing his best football he was in direct competition with an on fire Kaka for a starting place. Then the next time he was picked his football was beginning to fall apart.

He isn't in Scholes' league but he is similar to what Scholes was at his age style wise. I heard a rumour that Spurs want him. I hope they do bag him. Redknapp is the type of man who would revive his career.

Anderson got a lot more than 2 chances.

It might be true when you play as a wide attacking midfielder for Brazil, but I dont think he should have ever changed from his CM position anyway. He looked really good at a young age there and unfortunately I've never quite been convinced he has the kind of ability to be a regular starter wide for Brazil

Because he has not been poor for Brazil. That is why he keeps getting the chance.

Center midfield positions for Brazil are almost always held by 2 holding or holder and combative players Anderson, Mazinho etc. This lad had only 2 roles open to him. Either play wide or play in the hole behind the striker.

Unfortunately I disagree and thats why he's not been getting chances in recent seasons. But there was a time there when he was in the squad and getting a number of games and in my opinion he was poor. But Brazil didnt have any CMs performing well for them at the time

We've seen Brazil change their system and tactics in recent years. There's no reason to think that if he was playing well enough in a playmaker CM role, Brazil wouldnt adapt to fit him in. Granted he'd have to have been playing amazingly to force that issue, but when I saw him as a teen playing CM at Santos I did think thats the quality of player he could become. He impressed me more than Robinho at the time due to his maturity

I'd say he doesn't get chances now because hi club form wasn't warranted it. But when it picks up and becomes consistent he should easily compete with someone like Ramires for starting place.

I agree. At Santos he was great. He also continued it at Werder but sadly Brazil had switched their system by then. Then he went to Juve and things fell apart......

The good thing for him though is that Brazil currently don't have many play makers of his ilk to play further forward in their 3 man midfielder system. For they prefer to use Kaka wide, while Hernanes who is some times used there in Ganso absence, seems far better suited to a deeper role. If he can go to a club were he can recapture his form. He will definitely give Ganso a run for his money for that role.

Red Indian's forgotten his English today.

He should be a good signing for whoever picks him up, he's clearly a talented individual - he just needs to be in the right environment to succeed.

He's better off back at Santos where he can be carried, probably to replace Ganso.

After such attitude problems? Seems like a Riquelme back to Boca job, put him back in an environment where he'll be adored and where he's used to and he'll stop acting up.

Very Very harsh on McClaren there!

He's still peanut of trouble next to the elephant that is Balotelli. It's only really two problems. Leaving the hotel and taking a penalty. What else is there?

You can't fine the manager. It might not be as one sided as you think. Guðni Bergsson, Eiður Gudjohnsen, Gretar Rafn Steinsson, Ivar Ingimarsson. All professional footballers with their head screwed correctly on. All have been starters for their teams in the PL. All of them have been left out of the national team squad more than once due to something that the current manager each time wouldn't want to answer. Every single time, hindsight has revealed the manager or the FA to be the petty younger sibling.

Diego needs a stable environment after bad period in his career. Use the summer to cool down and chillax a bit.

After such attitude problems? .....
He has only displayed attitude issues at Wolfsburg. He was fine at Werder. And at Juve, nothing worked for more than just him over there and it wasn't attitude hat was the issue. I'd be shocked if he didn't fit in nicely else where in Europe. He is nothing like Riquelme.

Weren't Spurs interested in him a couple years back? Perhaps they can sell Modric for a hefty fee, and then build the team around Diego. I would do that if i were Levy.

Maybe re-sign Berba as well.

I think he could be a short term solution for us. I feel he has the capacity to do the job here.

Interview in the Independent today.

Diego: It’s my dream to play in the Premier League
By Tim Sturtridge & Alejandro Pérez

After a troubled campaign with Bundesliga outfit Wolfsburg, two-time Copa América winning midfielder Diego is plotting a route to England. The Brazilian caught up with The South American Football Show in association with The Independent.

Q:Things seem to have turned sour for you at Wolfsburg, what can you tell us about the situation Diego?

A:Last season was very difficult for us even if it ended well as we managed to avoid relegation. I hope that things get better for the team next season even if I don’t stay because I like Wolfsburg as a club. However, now I think it’s best if the club and myself go in different directions. I hope the move can work out well for everyone.

Q:Whilst speaking to Bayern Munich’s new acquisition Rafinha he told us that he found life impossible under manager Felix Magath whilst playing for him at Schalke 04. How is your relationship with Magath?

A:I think Felix Magath and myself share very different ideas from each other. Of course I respect him because he is the boss but it has been difficult for us to work together. We have sat down and talked and we both think it’s best if I move on.

Q:It seems Liverpool’s director of football Damien Comolli is a big fan of yours. Has there been any contact between Liverpool, Wolfsburg and yourself?

A:I prefer not to mention the names of clubs out of respect for the managers and the owners but it’s true that there is contact with some clubs in England. Of course I will give these offers special attention because it’s my dream to play in the Premier League.

Q:So despite interest in you from clubs all over Europe and back home in Brazil you would say England is your preferred destination?

A:At this moment England is where I want to play. We are just starting to have conversations with clubs so it’s too early to say where I will be going, but it would be perfect if I can play in the Premier League.

Q:You’re still only 26-years-old Diego but already over £50 million pounds has been spent on transfer fees to sign you. What kind of offer do you think Wolfsburg will accept to let you go?

A:I have no idea in this moment of the exact fee but I think because Wolfsburg and myself both want the same solution it will not be so difficult. When everybody wants the same outcome it makes things easier but I have not been told a number yet.

Fair enough, I thought I remember reading about him creating a few problems when he first left Santos, and then I knew he wasn't a success with Porto or Juve so assumed that it was something that went beyond his ability on the pitch...but I've never really taken much notice of him to be honest.
