Diego Simeone

Doubt it, what top clubs are available? He's better off waiting a few years and getting Barca or a top team over here.

Year out maybe? I don't think he'll leave either though.

Same story as Valencia. Valencia also lost 2 CL finals in 3 years, the second final to Bayern on penalties.

Yeah maybe he takes a break but he is so passionate about football I can't imagine him taking a break.
Didn't even have a break between his playing and managing career.

A very poor Torres cost him tonight, with any decent striker they would have won the game. People will only remember the loss but I thought his substitutions were spot on today and changed the game.

Very under appreciated manager here on Cafe.

Year after year he keeps his team near the top or thereabouts while having no right to and whenever you'd think football has finally passed him by he'll surprise you once more.

Were he to win his coveted cl title I'd think it would be fair to confidently place among the very best of all time.

Came as close as possible to winning it in 2014 and 2016. Shame he couldn't get over the line, that Atletico team was likeable.

Give him a striker who can score and he’ll give you a team that will compete for all competitions

it’s probably a testament to his accomplishments and he definitely has them punching above their weight, but they’re no minnows - they spend their fair share compared to the rest of La Liga

His style of play would not be appreciated at OT

Think given where Amorim has the team at the moment, the reality of a very very low league finish, going towards some stability with Diego's pragmatism I think it's a trade off many would make. Not my cup of tea in any sense but desperate times.

1.4bn spend under simeone, So he’s no pep, but hes still the 5th highest spender of all time.

I get that things are bad now. But a year into watching paint dry and players diving everywhere it wouldn’t be long before people are calling for his head

He wouldn't come here anyway, he's on a fat contact at atletico

I like him and I like his tactics but you are right. People wouldn't last 6 months unless they start having an interest for marking, coverages and grit.

He's been at Atletico for bit over 13 years. Seems so long but also makes me think about how Fergie was at United double of that, fantastic longevity. Wonder how long Simeone will stay at Atleti.

Been begging for Simoene for the last 6 years. I fully believe he's the one to turn us into a good team. But sadly he said he'll never come to England because English is hard to learn. Give him the fatest check to change his mind

Ratcliffe said in an interview that he loves Simeone

I would too. Right up my street.

Doesn’t he have other stuff going on at Atlético too making it a no-go? Like shares in the club or something

He's already by far and away the highest (legitimately) paid manager in world football.

Didn't we get close to signing him when Ole left? Which in hindsight is somewhat amusing as most turned up their nose (I myself perhaps included) at the prospect of the seemingly drab brand of football simeone offers coming to old Trafford which considering what followed was ill advised at best.

Fingers crossed Ruben is the one but if push comes to shove and we part ways I certainly wouldn't mind simeone, he certainly bring in some defensive rigidity at least.

TBF Atletico are hugely established now in CL and they spent another fortune this summer on 4-5 top level players so the plucky minnow thing was more relevant in 2014.

I did wonder 3-4 years back whether Simeone had taken them as far as he could but they're nicely in the mix for another La Liga title and Copa Del Rey could go either way so I think he's pretty much there until he retires now as a coach. Feels too late in his career now to go to new environment/learn language etc.

Might do Argentina job eventually but that will be less attractive post Messi.

He's a big name manager. We would blow up the structure we are (supposedly) trying to build and just hand him the keys, which is something I hope we stay away from.

He played for Lazio and Inter so seems likely he'll take a job in Serie A after he leaves Atletico.

Maybe. Lazio would be a significant step down compared to what he has now.

I think he does 20 years at Atletico Madrid. Has a manager ever had that longevity in Spain at one club?

I find from the occasions that I’ve watched them over the years that when he sets his team up to attack, they’re brilliant going forward but leaky at the back, and when he sets them up to defend, the opposite is true. That’s probably why Atletico, while being an excellent team, have never made the next step to become an exceptional, CL winning team.

It’s obviously not his fault when you consider their budget compared to their domestic and continental competition. It’s just something I find really intriguing because everyone chastises him due to their perception of him being a solely defensive manager, but he’s far from just that.

Its actually funny to see these kind of posts. Its been 12 years since we saw any kind of "style" at OT.

i don't think it matters anymore atleast not as relevant as other factors any way

If he won the champions league with Atletico or another La Liga would he go down as one of the modern greats? His longevity and the fact that he's competing with Barca and Real is worth a lot of respect (the football maybe not so much)

He's already one of the modern greats.

A CL would bump him up to the next tier, but he has won La Liga and at least 1 EL...

He'd be an awful manager for us. Atletico has spent a fortune for such poor football they play. They're unwatchable while they don't win anything relevant. If we're not winning at least I want a manager that makes us entertaining. Would hate if he come here.

They managed to win their league (twice) and others cups since 2014. Considering the other 2 giants, I'd say they've done well as about as well as possible

He's the highest paid manager in the world, he's at the club of his life, in a city where he gets to speak his native tongue, with virtually zero risk of losing the job or getting a pay cut unless he himself wants a change. Not sure why people talk about him in relation to United...the day he leaves that mob will be to either take the Argentina job or retire...

And yes, he's one of the very best managers of his era. Won everything but the CL

He's already one of the best of this generation. It cannot be understated what an achievement winning La Liga against Real and Barca in the 2010s was, and he did it twice.

The most likely scenario, yet Inter also could be a great destiny for him and one that he would feel at home too.

Or alternatively, a guy who on the surface appears to be ballsy and brave, but in reality, is the most gutless coward out there. Plays an extremely boring and cynical brand of football, refuses to leave his comfort zone in order to grow and improve as a coach, and bottled two CL finals to the same team.
