Sat next to him on a plane once. Have his autograph which he used to sign with his number 21.
His performance at the 2010 world cup was maybe the best individual performance I've seen at a world cup. He tamed that dodgy jabulani ball like no one else could. Closest thing to a one man team I'd seen. Folk hero.
Look at all those stupendous goals in one tournament.
I remember having the discussion back then and it was ~13-15 points that could be directly attributed to his goals without him being a first XI player.Scored some important goals in 2002/03 which helped us to win back the PL.
Always liked him, very good player.
He was terrible for us, there's no getting away from it. The goals against the scousers saved his legacy though!
When the Floodlights Fade......A really good watch I agree.
Strange that although it didn't work well during his time here, I've always thought of him as one of 'ours'.
Great player. Although they have one of the best striker in the game, Uruguay has never been the same since he retired from NT.
Sorry if my memory is different to everyone else's, but I remember him being rubbish for United and good everywhere else he played.
Take his goals at Anfield and yes he was rubbish for us in generalSorry if my memory is different to everyone else's, but I remember him being rubbish for United and good everywhere else he played.
Why was he so shit for us but worldclass at Villarreal and atletico?
Diego Forehand?Forlan is taking part in the ATP Challenger event in Uruguay at 45. Apparently he's also ranked 108 in the world on the seniors tour.
Former Manchester United striker Diego Forlan to make professional tennis debut

I think he was a tennis champion in his teens and could go to play professionally but chose to focus on football insteadMy mate used to see him playing tennis at the David Lloyd Gym in Cheadle when he was at us and said he was class back then
I heard Nadal could have been a pro footie player but chose tennisI think he was a tennis champion in his teens and could go to play professionally but chose to focus on football instead
Tbf, Scholes played as a number 10 that season and was unreal. He was never gonna be a regular starter at that point. His last minute goal v Chelsea kept us in the title race, brilliant finish.
I actually thought Fergie gave him a raw deal, he benched him once he started scoring. That's tough for any player, especially a striker.
Only sir Alex knew this, and tried to back him in the clubs pre season tennis tournament. Gary Neville (who of course ran the book) caught on and realised he must be a bit tasty for him to be asking.I think he was a tennis champion in his teens and could go to play professionally but chose to focus on football instead
I mean, last year, we had Weghorst, who only scored 2 goals in 29 appearances - an absolutely horrendous record for a striker.I was going through some old video tapes yesterday and I happened to watch highlights of United 5 Maccabi Haifa 2 in the CL group stage from whatever year it was.
Once I'd dried my eyes from seeing the thrilling, fluid and relentless attacking football on display and the almost comical levels of talent within the team (van Nistelrooy, Giggs, Ole, Beckham, Veron, Keane etc), I remembered this was the game Forlan finally scored for United. From a penalty. The commentator said it was his 27th appearance.
27 games without a goal! He had one run of form shortly after where he looked dynamite, and scored 5 in 7 or something like that but it didn't last and it's fair to say he wasn't a success at the club. And yet he went on to become of the best strikers in world football.
Can you imagine how a striker that couldn't score in 27 games would be received on here in 2024?
And he has 3 in 4 for Ajax this season. If there’s ever a barometer to record the gulf in class between Dutch football and the Premier League - this is it.I mean, last year, we had Weghorst, who only scored 2 goals in 29 appearances - an absolutely horrendous record for a striker.
He also scored a decent amount for Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga. And he has 3 in 4 for Ajax this season. If there’s ever a barometer to record the gulf in class between Dutch football and the Premier League - this is it.
Doesn’t stop the manager from trying to import the whole Dutch league unfortunately.
