Diego Forlán Appreciation Thread

World class player. Shame we didn't keep him around here but it probably worked out for the best in the end. I remember him mostly for his Atletico days and the 2010 World Cup.

It's funny, we have had a ton of "world class" players play for us and yet turn out so disappointing... Schweinsteiger, Forlan, Veron, Valdes, Falcao, Blanc... all those guys will go down as legends of the game. In a strange way, I'm kinda happy to say they've all played for United. (Hopefully Zlatan doesn't turn out the same)

Strange that although it didn't work well during his time here, I've always thought of him as one of 'ours'.

Great player. Although they have one of the best striker in the game, Uruguay has never been the same since he retired from NT.

His performance at the 2010 world cup was maybe the best individual performance I've seen at a world cup. He tamed that dodgy jabulani ball like no one else could. Closest thing to a one man team I'd seen. Folk hero.

Look at all those stupendous goals in one tournament. :wenger:

The Dutch defending for the first goal. Jesus Christ, so poor.

He was one of my favourite players when he was here. I'm not sure why. I got so much enjoyment out of a Forlan goal.

Shame it didn't work out but RVN was the man then, and Diego still left us with some great memories. What a lovely man too. Glad he had a great career

Scored some important goals in 2002/03 which helped us to win back the PL.

Always liked him, very good player.
I remember having the discussion back then and it was ~13-15 points that could be directly attributed to his goals without him being a first XI player.

Sure, you can always wonder if someone else in his place wouldn't do better... I would kill for a sub/backup who gets us that many points.

Remember him being shocking at his start - but always tried hard on the pitch. Was delighted when he finally went on a scoring run - will obviously always remember the double against Liverpool and the late winner against Chelsea.

Was absolutely delighted that he did well after he left - seemed like a top guy that always tried hard, so he really deserved it.

He was terrible for us, there's no getting away from it. The goals against the scousers saved his legacy though!

I don't think he was terrible, his conversion rate wasn't great but he was a decent enough player. He looked like a brilliant forward-certainly a great striker of the ball, who always seemed to go close to scoring but not quite get it in the net. He never seemed to get the rub of luck here.
Such a likeable player, and if a few more of his efforts had gone in for him I think he would have gotten more opportunities and possibly gone on to be a club legend. He always knew he was good enough, and I'm sure that bothers him more than anything. He was so desperate to score for us, his celebrations were great. Another one of our many 'what could have been' players.

It's such a shame they didn't overlap a wee bit more. They jointly got 4 Golden Boots in the last decade.

4 Golden Boots in a decade, by two different players from a 3M people country. Let that sink in...

Scores 2 goals at Anfield, one of them one of the funniest Utd goals ever, and then years later goes on with Atletico to score against Liverpool again and knock them out of the UEFA Cup.

Legend.

He came from Uruguay
He made the scousers cry
Diegoooo woaaah Diegooooo

Sorry if my memory is different to everyone else's, but I remember him being rubbish for United and good everywhere else he played.

Definitely didn't hit the heights he did elsewhere but was critical in certain games for us - Anfield, last minute winner v Chelsea and playing topless v Villa (?) made him worth the fee alone.

Why was he so shit for us but worldclass at Villarreal and atletico?

Better suited to the Spanish league and matured as a player. He was also playing 2nd/3rd/4th fiddle to the likes of RVN, Solskjaer, Saha and Rooney here. He was never going to have the time to cement himself in the squad whilst we were demanding titles every season.

He'd probably have done better joining us now tbh.

I was going through some old video tapes yesterday and I happened to watch highlights of United 5 Maccabi Haifa 2 in the CL group stage from whatever year it was.

Once I'd dried my eyes from seeing the thrilling, fluid and relentless attacking football on display and the almost comical levels of talent within the team (van Nistelrooy, Giggs, Ole, Beckham, Veron, Keane etc), I remembered this was the game Forlan finally scored for United. From a penalty. The commentator said it was his 27th appearance.
27 games without a goal! He had one run of form shortly after where he looked dynamite, and scored 5 in 7 or something like that but it didn't last and it's fair to say he wasn't a success at the club. And yet he went on to become of the best strikers in world football.

Can you imagine how a striker that couldn't score in 27 games would be received on here in 2024?

His last minute goal v Chelsea kept us in the title race, brilliant finish.
I actually thought Fergie gave him a raw deal, he benched him once he started scoring. That's tough for any player, especially a striker.

My mate used to see him playing tennis at the David Lloyd Gym in Cheadle when he was at us and said he was class back then

Similar to Veron, we signed him at the wrong time.

By the time he moved to Spain, he was more experienced and able to thrive.

Tbf, Scholes played as a number 10 that season and was unreal. He was never gonna be a regular starter at that point.

I think he was a tennis champion in his teens and could go to play professionally but chose to focus on football instead
Only sir Alex knew this, and tried to back him in the clubs pre season tennis tournament. Gary Neville (who of course ran the book) caught on and realised he must be a bit tasty for him to be asking.

I mean, last year, we had Weghorst, who only scored 2 goals in 29 appearances - an absolutely horrendous record for a striker.

And he has 3 in 4 for Ajax this season. If there’s ever a barometer to record the gulf in class between Dutch football and the Premier League - this is it.

Doesn’t stop the manager from trying to import the whole Dutch league unfortunately.

He also scored a decent amount for Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga.
