Diego Armando Maradona

A classic, Napoli vs the great Arrigo Sacchi's AC Milan (1988).

One side Van Basten, Rijkaard, Tassotti, Baresi, Costacurta and Maldini.

On the other, Maradona, Careca, Carnevale, Alemão and Ciro Ferrara. Maradona's goal is a cheeky thing of beauty.

Great vid

PD: a detail I like from old matchs, it's to actually watch them again and seeing that what we loved so much in our time, sometimes because of that, we go over the top with an excess of nostalgia.

PD2: Careca for me never received the respect he deserved, extraordinary player

I mean thinking Maldini was always perfect, Baresi was always perfect, Rikjaard was always perfect...well, nope...the fvckups from the three of them in this match in this current idiotic social media period would have mean tons of memes and bullshit like that.

Careca joined Napoli because he wanted to play with Maradona. He was an amazing striker and I have fond memories of him.

We're talking about Arrigo Sacchi's Milan, his Dutch trio and iron defense. I believe Gullit was still injured and that's why he wasn't on the pitch that day.

Of course you'll see feck-ups especially with today's hindsight. Nevertheless Napoli were walking on water and made Milan look like amateurs.

Yeah, this idea that the defenders of yesteryear were these incredible, perfect machines who never put a foot wrong compared to the "clowns" of today is pure nostalgia bs

Speaking of, Serie A of the time was mental. There was an incredible team in serie A that season that broke pretty much every single league record at the time on their way to the title, and it was neither Milan - winners of the CL with 5-0 win over Madrid in the SF - nor Napoli with Maradona and Careca

Yep people need to actually go back and watch old games, so they can get a more balanced picture of everything.

Live is life.

One of the most, if not the most, iconic warm-ups of all time.

Maradona at the Olympiastadion in Munich, in the second leg of the UEFA Cup semi-final against Bayern Munich (April 1989). The game ended in a draw (2-2) but allowed Napoli to progress to the final against VfB Stuttgart, thanks to their 2-0 home win. A final they would eventually win, due in no small part to Maradona's contribution, earning Napoli their first and only European title.

Everything it's so raw, full of emotions with him, in the pitch, outside the pitch, no cassette, pure rage and joy...that warm up it's glorius

The pressing and offside traps from AC Milan was wild

i was in the stands close to that. When Maradona came out, the Bayern corner booed him. He grabbed a ball and did his stuff right in front of us, open shoelaces and all. After a few minutes, the corner applauded him :) will never forget that

You are a very lucky man.

Thanks a lot for sharing.

Can't just leave it at that. How did he play?

i forgot that :D

At that age, I was focussed on our team and thought we should have won against that fat little ****....

Unfortunately, I only started keeping my tickets a bit later and I didn't keep it up, either. Still, some good ones survived :)

They were a European cup worthy team.

The old formats biggest problem in my opinion was that often times the team that got to win it wasn't necessarily the best of europe in that calendar year, a product if it's qualification rules.

They did play in the European cup, but got beat by Real Madrid and Spartak Moscow. The first round draw against Madrid was the sort of "big name instantly has no european exposure that season if they lose" tie that the uefa and bigger club suits wanted to do away with. Though in that case it was more because of Maradona being there than Napoli.

A lot of teams in the uefa cup/cup winners were also Euro cup worthy in quality back then. It gave the secondary competitions a lot of value and respect...in fact the uefa was arguably just as hard to win.

I mostly meant in how do the pre requisite of being league champions the year before they only got a single cracked at it while they were still decent which was in 87/88 as they fell off hard following their second win.

And yeah both uefa cup and cup winners cup indeed had a lot more prestige compared to the ticket to the CL way the former is treated these days which Is somewhat of a shame.

Napoli drew 2-2 but it was enough to go through (they won the first leg 2-0 thanks to Careca and Carnevale assisted by Maradona)

Maradona assisted Careca's two goals.

Here's the first leg:

Absolutely.

The CL's old format was unforgiving. Maradona played only 6 CL games in his whole time at Napoli.

The UEFA Cup was as tough to win as the European Cup when you consider the caliber of the teams who qualified there.

And he should have had at least three...

I have the sensation that Diego from the Genius alike, even loving scoring, was easily the one more incline to play for others than scoring himself

Indeed.

It's a crucial aspect of his game that's less talked about.

That friendly against Valencia I think with the NT that he dribbled everyone and served the goal at the end to Ramon Diaz was incredible, few players wouldn't have tried to score even a bit blocked after such slalom. That duo BTW, sad that Ramon was so fecking lazy and they ended their friendship.

Wow some nice momentos there, thanks for sharing. Almost forgotten about the game we played you guys earlier in the 98/99 season. Had to refresh my memory on what must been a pretty entertaining game.

Cheers. A touch of class with each of Maradona's involvements.

What the actual feck

This is like being there when Da Vinci was dancing around the local brothels in his pajamas while taking a break from painting The Last Supper.
