Did we sell anyone? Big summer fire sale (supposedly)

They will counter with 10 and then knowing us we will meet in the middle at 5.

Besides Fred to Fulham, the other deal that seems to actually have legs is Hendo to Forest permanently for something around 20M. The hold up in actually getting this done seems to be our uncertainty over the GK position but we do run the risk of Forest moving on to another target.

Maguire should be jettisoned however we can manage it and we need to be ruthless. Take away the Captaincy and tell him he will not play 1 minute for the first team next season.
I think part of the problem we face is we have players on big contracts who are going to refuse to leave. Maguire, Sancho and Martial are all going to dig their heels in, but we might be able to move Fred, McTomminay, Bailly etc.

So we sold Iqbal and Laird for like 1.5m combined (plus sell ons) - that’s 1.5m more to spend for purchases

Laird off to Birmingham City

I think this is potentially a new strategy by us. My best mate is a Birmingham fan - we sold them Chong for 250k which seemed crazy low. But apparently we have a 40% sell on clause. Luton were rumoured to be interested after one season at £13million.

makes sense rather than loan them out forever or leaving them in the reserves

Would you want him out at that price? Who can you get whose better than Fred for 30 million? No one. He's worth 30 million IMHO and I would rather keep him on a one year contract than sell him for 20 million.

Utd bought him for 50m, he been poor for most of that time. He has 1 year left. Sell him now for whatever you can get rather than have to suffer him playing for one more year and going on a free.

At a bare minimum we need to be finding some sort of fee for Maguire and Fred. McTominay should also go as it seems like he somehow has some sale value but I'm resigned to us likely keeping him.
There is a zero chance of us selling both McTominay and Fred.

Agreed. Loan limbo really doesn't work - more often than not it just stunts players' development.

I dont think he's been poor for most of that time to be honest. He's been subjected to playing alongside McTominay, who himself has been played out of position for too long. He's been a very useful squad player in ETH's first season, and is a seasoned pro. I'd actually give the guy another contract.

He's worse than Kleberson and Djemba 2, 5 years and yet he still has people who want him kept.

The only reason he got that extension recently was so he could be sold for a fee this summer.

Will never understand the weird cult-like fanbase he has around him. Maybe because he does give 100% and smiles a lot but the lack of quality has been painfully obvious for 5 years.

£20m is a fair asking price, we should stand pretty firm. £15 plus £5 in add-ons would be fine.

Yes, he's in the last year of his contract, 29, and would be an expensive wage for them, even with the kind of moderate reduction he'd probably be willing to accept. But he's also a regular Brazilian international and would immediately be their best midfielder. He shone in big games against the likes of Barca and City last season. He has a ridiculous engine and shows no signs of slowing down physically yet.

We need to sell some players, yes. But Fred certainly isn't the first name on the list to leave - this isn't a 'get him off the books at all costs' situation.

It's one of lifes mysteries.

We overpay for our new signings, overpay their wages. And can't sell our players or get literally peanuts for them. Pathetic squad management, and it shows no sign of a sea change.

Not me, if we got anything over £10m for him I’d say it’s a good deal, if we got £20m I’d be gobsmacked.
He's worth more than that you're conditioned to accept low fees due to our history in how much we get. We virtually have to give them away!

Your posts show no sign of changing either. The same negative nonsense every single year

You sure? I can't remember posting this line of concern before. And post Ed Woodward is a newish chapter not a year on year thing. I am negative about the way we're run however, it's so frustrating..

With respect, I don't think thats true at all. I think he's better than both of those two. Djemba Djemba coudn't pass the ball, all he did was dive into tackles. Kleberson had ability but was painfully slow on the ball could never get used to Prem pace. Fred is a solid pro in this league, with some skill and has the occasional game where he's brillant defensively. Gives the ball away too much - yes - doesn't have any sort of influence on our game in possession - absolutely. I'm not claiming hes a good player. He's a useful squad player, who you could get 40 million for given the market.

   ¥40m maybe.

Would like to see a lot more movement through the exit door in the coming weeks. Though the rumour mill doesn't seem to be inspiring much confidence at the moment.

40m? That would be a record fee for the sides he'd likely end up at.

Does feel like until Mount & Onana are confirmed we won't see much movement. Think we have to make some in order to sign striker

Lack of rumours is staggering. How days go, more and more clubs are buying needed players so when we decide to start selling, we will be forced to only loan players again.

For example, Henderson transfer should have been done by now.

There are very many required sales:
Henderson
Maguire
Bailly
Williams
Alex Telles
Fred
McTominay
VDB
Elanga
Sancho

That’s more or less 10 players to be sold. Then there is also Greenwood (needs a loan) and Pellistri (also unclear whether he needs to be kept this year).

It is a concern the clearout process hasn't started yet, I believe players like Henderson, McTominay, Maguire and Fred should have takers in PL, Williams will definitely have takers in lower PL teams or Championship teams.

No because they are all on obscene wages that no one else is silly enough to cover apart from us

That is a myth and silly excuse. Maguire and Martial are but the rest (McT, Williams, Fred, Henderson, Donny, Telles, Bailly) are far from obscene wages and far from being unsellable because of it. Especially in PL.
Look at wages in Newcastle, Wolves, West Ham or Everton. McT or Bailly for example wouldn't be in top 5 earners there. NFO (bottom table club) had no problem covering Henderson's wage last year.

You just need to know how to sell and put some effort in it. Murtough's strategy obviously is "offers will come".

I think the problem isn't wages, but their massive decline since joining us. If they were good enough to play regularly for let's say Spurs, Milan, Roma, etc, their wages wouldn't be too much of an issue - but they aren't. We brought in mid-table talent, thinking they were top 6 talent, and paid them accordingly. The problem is recruitment not necessarily wage structure.

There are also exceptions, Fred, Lindelof, McT, Elanga etc are all on very acceptable wages.

Probably doing the sensible thing and waiting to see how much Onana costs - we can't be going into the season with Heaton as No1

We undervalue our own players so much and the subsequently moan when they don’t go for all that much

Yep. Selling Fred for £10m makes no sense at all, its not going to aid our budget and we will be one midfielder short.

£20m should be minimum for a player that started alot of games last season. Other PL clubs sell these players for 25 / 30m but we are happy with 10m?

Part of our problems is that we are not pushing them for transfers and at the same time, players are happy being just here. Why and how Smalling left to Roma or Hendo left to NFO? Because THEY wanted to go and play regulary. So they pushed for transfers.
I am not surprised when some 30y old player choose to collect big wage and be part time players in big club like United. But it surprises me when young players like Williams and Elanga or players in their prime like MCT or Donny rather choose to be backup of the backup instead searching for new club.

Because he's a 30 year old that relies on energy in the last year of his contract?

We tried pulling this shit with Romero, Rojo and Darmian. Look where that got us. We extended Bailly just to sell and he's still on the books.Take the money and run.
