Tottenham Fail In Surprise Move For Manchester United Defender Rio Ferdinand - Report

Tottenham Hotspur have failed in an audacious bid to sign Manchester United and England defender Rio Ferdinand according to the News of the World.

It would appear that Harry Redknapp made discreet enquiries over the availability of Ferdinand but United boss Sir Alex Ferguson reportedly told the former Portsmouth manager that the defender is not for sale.

It is also believed that Tottenham’s medical staff have even assessed Ferdinand’s injuries and believe that they could get 100 games over two seasons out of the England captain.

That led to Redknapp being convinced that Ferdinand was the signing he needed but United are apparently not willing to sell.

Ferdinand was again on the sidelines as the Red Devils brushed aside West Ham United 3-0 to move to third in the Premier League table.

If you canget King playing somewhat regularly, you can get anyone to play!!

If there is one thing Spurs need, it's injury prone central defenders.

Why would United ever give permission to Spurs medical staff to assess his injuries?

A fully fit Rio would be immense for Spurs.

But let's look at things logically, his injury record of late ain't been all that great.

Would Spurs really be willing to fork out a large transfer fee on another injury plagued centre back when prior experience is taken into consideration?

Levy maybe a wanker but he ain't no cnut.

A fully fit Rio would be immense for us too. Nevertheless, their medical department inspires about as much confidence as Arsenal's. Why not trying to keep King and Woodgate fit first Harry? Even though this article is obviously a complete fabrication.

So without assessing the player their medical staff are convinced that he can play 100 games for them in two seasons. What a shit story.

How much were they willing to bid? 50mil? I will take 50Mil. Or 25Mil plus Bale and he is yours for keeps

This is 'Arry we're talking about, we all know he loves a bit of wheelin' and dealin'

So we probably were offered Jonathan Woodgate, half a Mars bar, and the engine from a 1993 Vauxhall Nova
I'll get my coat
:(

just heard some geezer on talksport saying its looking more an more likely that rio will go to spurs, I havent heard anything about this before? Surely not going to happen.

Not a chance we will let Rio to Spurs.

Why would we want to sell one of our best and most experienced players? His injuries are a concern but with a new GK and by losing Scholes, VDS and Nev I would be shocked if Rio is not at OT next season.

ridiculous..we lost neville, van der sar, and scholes, might lose brown and o'shea as well. that's 4 or 5 very experience players, with huge influence in the dressing room..

we need rio's experience more than ever now.

I guess it would explain why we were in for Varane despite signing Jones. Still sounds like bollocks though

anyone heard anything else about this? He was prob full of shit but odd for him to come out out say it with confidence when theres been no rumours to my knowledge.

There'd been a few scattered rumours that Tottenham were going to bid. Would be utterly bizarre to let him go, as he's still arguably the best defender in the world.

fair play to Spurs if this is true, at least they've the balls to want to be a big club

might overtake Arsenal in two years if this keeps up

Modric looks fairly in his place aswell

Not too outrageous of a rumour, kinda of goes back to when Fergie sold Stam. Now though that turned out to be a bit of a blunder, the intention behind it was a huge offer for a supposively ageing defender coming off a couple of injuries.

I think those circumstances apply a lot more to Rio, tbh, in that i dont think he going to get back to what he once was and hes gradually is going to be out the side more and more with injuries.

unless spurs come up with a ' too good to miss' offer, i cannot see rio leaving, especially with a new 20 yr old keeper replacing vds.

Who knows, perhaps spurs offer might involve modric...

feck off, Rio won't go, he loves United and he's one of the few leaders we have left.

And of course, one of the best defenders in the world.

well, we're probably twice as good when he plays, so there's no reason to sell him

there is, however a slight suspicion that Ferguson might want some money for him eventually. He signed him up to a five year deal when when was 29-30, at decent wages, so there's always the possibility

a small possibility

This would seem a very strange move for all to be honest. Ferdinand is still an automatic starter for the best club in the country, winning trophies and earning far more at Man utd than he ever would here.

Ferguson still starts Ferdinand when he's fit, has just lot a ton of experience this season and I don't think would risk going into a season with just one 'fully senior' centre back in Vidic if that makes sense.

As for us, Redknapp, what are you doing? We've already got our own Ferdinand, he's called Ledley King and they'll be spending a huge amount of time getting acquainted in the treatment room if he comes. We'd be paying two absolutely superb defenders big wages for sitting on their asses. What's the point?

For Spurs, it doesn't make sense. But its exactly the kind of signing Redknapp loves, though I can see a Levy veto. I can't see how it makes sense for Ferdinand or Man utd though, unless Ferdinand wants to come back to London and Ferguson knows something we don't.

If they do have a genuine interest it would be good test Spurs resolve for Modric or Bale.

Possible muppet dilemma: Berbatov+Carrick+Rio + 15m? for Modric + Bale. Yay or nay?

My old man was saying last season that he wouldn't be surprised if we sold Rio. He mentioned Pallister and how we got rid of him when people still felt he could do a job. To be honest, Smalling is so good that he needs to be playing every week now. Anything else is not good enough because he is above playing for the reserves or a bit-part role. He got plenty of games last season, but he should be facing all the top teams really. Another thing to consider is Rio's injuries.

The only appeal in the move I can imagine for Rio personally is that his business interests might be better served in London than Manchester.
