Departed

Di Caprio is clearly a superb actor. You just hate him for some reason.Clearly as well.

I think he is rubbish. I don't hate him though. He was good in What's Eating Gilbert Grape. He was OK in 2 average films, Blood Diamond and the Departed and 1 great one, Romeo + Juliet.

Wahlberg is decent. Competent and not utterly hatable.

Cage is good. At playing himself in every movie he has ever made.

Cruise is shit.

He isn't much of an actor but then few hollywood stars are.

He was good in Wild at Heart and all. Can't think of anymore.

Cruise is shite, though. The rest on your list are brilliant actors, despite being a bit long in the tooth.

Wild At Heart was OK, Moonlighting the same but his only decent performance where he actually acted slightly differently was Raising Arizona.

A good film is a good film. People will come to see it!

Unfortunately this isn't true anymore. I can't think of a ton of great films that nothing at the box office because the star names weren't there to appeal to the mainstream. This is England is a recent one. Fantastic movie, no-one went to see it.

Put some half-assed Rom-Com out there with Jennifer Lopez or Jennifer Aniston, and you get the numbers.

Its a crying shame.

Thats what the public want though. Its the Cages and Cruises that attract the crowds, not the plotline or cinematography. The big actors these days don't need to take chances, because people just want to see them playing themselves in a film.

Can't think of too many great character actors out there these days. Philip Seymour-Hoffman springs to mind. Paul Giamatti. I'm sure there are others, but none of them are particularly mainstream. Maybe Ed Norton is the best around at the moment.

All the actors you mention are class. I would say Russell Crowe is one of the best.

Even Russell Crowe could be accused of playing himself though, but I agree he is excellent.

One performance that springs to mind was Gary Oldman in Hannibal. Completely disfigured. I think he actually requested to be left uncreditted for the performance to see if anybody could guess it was him.

A very good film but doesn't quite achieve greatness IMO because it's a remake of a Hong Kong flick. Check out the original version Infernal Affairs and the 2 sequels and you'll see that the bulk of the films' appeal comes from the very tight script which also brings outstanding performances out of Andy Lau, Tony Leung, Anthony Wong and most surprisingly for me Eric Tsang (in the Nicholson role).

that's the brilliance of the film - putting Eric Tsang and Jack Nicholson together...

Probably just goes to show you that alot of people that go to the flicks are brain dead...... which is an outstanding show;)

Lived in Wellington for year where it was filmed and few lads took me to the set locations, so that was cool!

Top actor and all-round top bloke. Pity there wasnt more like him and comin through!

How good was he in Leon......absolute class:cool:

Can't believe people actually rate Cage as an actor. Woeful. It does goes to show how strong Coppola's strings are
Personally, I think he was excellent in Leaving Las Vegas, good in Raising Arizona and decent in Matchstick Men. Not bad in Adaptation either.

Problem is he picks a shitload of 'safe' films, most of which are crap, probably because he gets paid a fortune to do them. He has shown he can act when he has to though.

Good post.

He isn't the best actor or something but he can act well sometimes and has done too in the past.
