West Ham striker Jermain Defoe has submitted a transfer request following the club's relegation.

The Upton Park side went down to Division One on Sunday and 20-year-old Defoe has already decided that he wants to remain in the top flight.

Manchester United have previously been linked with the centre-forward - regarded as one of the most promising in the English game.

It was just on the sports news on Radio 5 and <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/w/west_ham_utd/3020999.stm" target="_blank">HERE</a> so it all looks official.

didn't wait long did he?

rats and sinking ships anyone?

5 million pounds and we're laughing - that's our striker for the summer, leaving loads for Quaresma or whoever takes your fancy. :D

England Under-21 striker Defoe was one of the shining lights in a season of despair for the Hammers, who will play First Division football after their 2-2 draw at Birmingham City.

Match report:
Birmingham 2-2 West Ham
But Defoe, who has been linked with a move to Manchester United, is not prepared to play outside the top flight.

The 20-year-old said: "As much as I love West Ham United I feel that now is the right time for me to move on in my career.

"This is very much a career decision.

"I am very ambitious and hungry to achieve at the highest levels of the game for both club and country

Don't want another Terry Gibson! <img src="graemlins/nono.gif" border="0" alt="[No No]" />

who is this glen johnson guy from west ham..
seems to be highly rated..even by gooners
can someone tell me more bout this guy???

My concern is who replaces Ruud when injured. Ole, Diego and this geezer are not suited to being the lone striker in 4-4-1-1.

Who can partner Ruud? Ole and Diego can. Who can replace him? Not Defoe.

I think defoe can be the 1 in the 4-5-1 formation, albeit he will do it in a different way. He will rely on pace, and for a small guy he is pretty resilient on the ball. and we are looking for someone who can carry the ball at pace.

He can play up front in a fashion similar to Henry.

and if you need a good example, you only need to look at Damien Duff in the world cup where he played up front a couple of times and caused complete havoc with almost every attack. Duff is no.1 on my list. I wouldnt say no to Defoe tho.

Wouldnt be surprised if Defoe is our #9 next season.

It would me. <img src="graemlins/nono.gif" border="0" alt="[No No]" /> Number 9 is for a special striker, not an under 21. Move Ole to it I say.

That's a valid point. We need a striker who can replace Ruud if he gets injured. Not sure if Defoe is up for that task.

I agree, I'd much rather Ole have it, but if he were going to have 9 he'd of started this season with it. Depending on how much Fergie rates Defoe he could get #9

Its a good point, we are too relient on Ruud. The perfect signing would be a foil to Ruud but also capable of replacing him as the main predator.
Ideally someone like Henry, but realistically Cisse, would give options.
DeFoe is a more long term investment that may tempt us by his price tag. He has potential to be a star, but does not address the immediate need as would a Ronaldinho who would make the difference in the CL next season.

Kluivert. Although it would seriously piss me off. :(

Kluivert is capable of playing as the lone striker, partnering Ruud and replacing Ruud. Although his ego would have to be subsumed into the team first, which quite frankly would be one of Ferguson's biggest challenges. You thought Eric was tough? Kluivert will be harder.

I'd rather anyone but Kluivert, lazy bugger and he's said in the past Arsenal were the only team in England for him. Bah!

Valid point you have there. He is capable of all the things you say - but is he capable of sitting on the bench?

And which four players would make up the midfield if Kluivert was in?

Everyone's wary of Kluivert, even my dutch mates who like his football agree he's more trouble than he's worth.
Interesting how Ruud and Kluivert being the same age, have had such contrasting developments- Kluivert burst into the top flight at 18 but has had his ups and down, while Ruud came from the dutch second division a good player but not an obvious star, yet worked his ass off and has passed Kluivert IMO.

perhaps its destiny for the two to be reunited. wat a story that wud make eh?

i think kluivert wud relish being beside ruud, they seem to really like each other. we're talkin cole and yorke kind of respect and comaraderie.

do you think kluivert would sit back and let ruud break all the records? there would be some friendly competition if u ask me.

can you guys think of anyone more suited to being ruuds foil AND alternative in one shot? perhaps only Cisse, Shevchenko, ronaldo....

Kluivert said theres only one English club for him, Arsenal.
So as far as I'm concerned there's only one dutch striker for me, and he already plays for us.

Couldn't have said it any better.

f**k..seems like Kewell prefer a move to ARSE as well..what's wrong with this guy..are they <img src="graemlins/wenger.gif" border="0" alt="[Wenger]" /> ?

I don't think Defoe is good enough to play for us, he is a poor man's Andy Cole. If you think that Cole's finishing wasn't all too clever, Defoe is a whole lot worse.

Personally, I'd rather we signed Kewell, which would allow Giggs (or Kewell) to play in the hole behind Ruud. Ole is perfectly capable of leading the line. Anyone who says otherwise simply didn't see the game at Stadio Delle Alpi.

Never happen, United wont move the shirt of a first team player if they have been there for a few years unless the specificaly request it and its unused. OGS hasnt asked for it and it has been vacant for a season, the new striker will take it.

Totally agree with your whole posting - been saying that all along myself! :)

Anyone else recall the other pocket-sized dynamo, Terry Gibson?

Young right back. From what I've seen of him looks all class, quick and pretty good defensively as well as going forward.

And instead of ending it quickly, the hammers open the first summer Saga with everyone already knowing the result: Defoe leaves anyway.

he can feck off back to Middle Earth for all i care <img src="graemlins/houllier.gif" border="0" alt="[Houllier]" />
