Declan Rice

What got your knickers in a twist? Nobody's mentioned anything about what you're taking about

Just peeved seeing a decent young player slagged off while playing for an alright team when he'd have been appreciated elsewhere is all.

No one has said anything other than over rated. Both for club and country.
I think you’ve more of an issue over what country he choose.

Nah no problem at all to be honest, the guy was born in England. Just an interesting insight as to how England fans have constantly overrated their ability as a team and that team's chances at tournaments. Rice was never going to be good enough for you (for example our own Garner has miles more potential in his position) but the level of criticism you guys show players is incredible is all. I simply stated he'd have been better treated by Irish fans.

Simple question: who would you have play in Rice's position for England?

I'd wager a decent proportion of the posters slagging him aren't even English.

I’m not English.

I guess you arent a fan of McTominay then

McTominay isn't seen as some kind of great British hope in the same way that Rice is. McTominay's expectations are much more realistic and he's fulfilling them.

That midfield dominated us years later.

You say that like we're some kind of midfield benchmark that all midfields must test themselves against. :D

All I'm saying is that we can do a lot better than Rice and for the fee WH will quote us, I wouldn't touch him with a bargepole.

Probably Winks, but he'd be more of a DLP than a pure DM. Then I'd partner him with Henderson in a box to box role, and Maddison as the advanced playmaker, getting forwards to support Kane, Sterling and one of Rashford or Sancho.

Can we just look at Koke, Saul or Partey instead. Preferably two of them.

I have no issues of us signing rice for let's say 40m. However it's not going to happen. Westham will ask for 60m+ for the guy

Limited ability on the ball, composure lacking under pressure and zero movement, not goods traits to have for an elite midfielder, unfortunately Rice falls into these categories.
Needs more otherwise he'll be left behind by much better players.

When you consider Parteys buyout clause and the likely asking price for Rice by West Ham, it borders on absolute negligence to even consider him as an option. An average player who is double the price of a player twice as good as him.

There were rumors last summer where West Ham set the price at £90m....

Right, imagine McTominay playing for West Ham. Imagine we enquired and they quoted us £90m for him. Would you be happy with that?

From what I've seen, Rice is no better a midfielder than Scott and I would never want Scott if he played for someone else let alone for that figure. This British rule that Ole is implementing is going to destroy us - imagine spending £180m next summer on Rice and Maddison?

That figure, if used in the same way teams like Leicester use their funds, could get us:

RW, CDM and a CM, with some change, if we targeted some of the ridiculously promising youngish talents around Europe. It's bonkers.

Really poor player. Lacks the finesse and guile to play anywhere outside of CB. He just reminds me of when we stuck Jones into a DM role. How he became so overrated is absolutely beyond me. He’s no better than peak Dier was despite what some are making themselves believe. Revisionism is a funny thing but peak Dier was also being lauded as the next best thing and linked with big money moves. I know some are pretending Rice is so much better than Dier ever was, but sorry folks, you’re kidding yourselves.

I've seen him live plenty of games for West Ham and wouldn't really rate him a "really poor player". He does have his flaws but there are things he does well too like breaking up play, reads the game quite well etc but for the fees mentioned I think we should stay away from any potential deal. Honestly it would be plain stupidity to want Rice for 60m£+ when Partey is available for 45m£.

Really feel that the kind of player we need probably plays in Spain for a team like Sociedad, Villareal or something yet it seems we dont even have those teams and those other leagues on our radar anymore.

Rice is bang average. I prefer McTominay

Marco Roca.

I think it's only a matter of time before one of - Winks, Garner, Foden, The Longstaff brothers step up a level and possibly replace Rice in the England team.

Each to their own but when it’s hype vs reality, I would say really poor.

Dier is a very good comparison for me. Not quite a CB but not quite a midfielder, either. A kind of amalgamation of the two who just does the basic, tidy stuff to a decent standard. He'd be an upgrade on Matic, 100% agree with those claiming that - but just being an upgrade on someone rubbish doesnt warrant spending £90m on someone. £30m, yes.

He’s literally a carbon copy of Dier with a similar career path: Both didn’t look anything great at CB and were moved into a DM role, where both became very overrated. I know some love to pretend he’s nothing like Dier and that’s just baffling for me.

The problem we are in - in general - is that plenty of smack, bang average players would be an upgrade on what we have. However, if this is our thought trail when signing players, we will remain in abject mediocrity for years to come.

His reputation definitely was enhanced during the tug of war with Ireland. The longer it went the more hype around him.

There seems to be a paranoia in English football at the moment about losing dual qualified players to other nations. Abraham and Tomori are just the latest examples. Do a couple of interviews saying you're considering the other nation and you're in the squad!

The more I think about him the more I think he would be a mistake. Never watched him and thought, I wish United had him . Unless he comes cheap United shouldn't touch him. We need to start building a world class midfield, not another bang average one.

And I'd wager the ones bigging him up are English haha. He's average and like I said in a earlier post he is like Schneiderlin a player who looks good at breaking up attacks for a average side but if he makes a move to a so called top 4 team then you will see more that he's so limited
