But he hasn't been outstanding. It's not just one match. This is what he does every game, except he's up against technically gifted opposition, and so he's struggling to get anywhere near them.

No, because Sterling is having an off game. This is Rice's standard game. Big difference there.

Nobody is getting near them. and I just counted Rice's 2nd clear break up of play this half.

All this is in your eyes

The issue is the tactics, he been overrun in midfield and why Henderson has now come on. You cant rely entirely on one player

When your sole job is to get near them, that doesn't float.

The issue is he isn't good enough. If he could do anything else then it would mitigate it somewhat. So when he can't do the only thing he's in this team to do, he's going to get criticized.

Comprehensively the worst central midfielder on the field tonight.

Ok Rice contributing well again and then a superb tackle. What is god's earth are some of you watching.

Ok so in essence England bring on an extra midfielder (Henderson) and we are controlling the game now. And Rice now shining, as is Barclay.

You’re mental. He replaced delph?! How is that bringing on an extra midfielder?

Well it seems to be news to you. So somewhat informative.
This is really clinical stuff. 101. Can't articulate your point with any intelligence? Then just insult them.

How many passes is that?
95.9% at the moment. 49 passes. Not huge, but the highest in England's midfield. I think Southgate's tactics are a big factor in that. We've been way too deep, with our three most prolific passers being defenders.

A superior central midfielder was brought into the pitch and we’re doing a tidbit better retaining possession.

You remember us vs Barcelona in the CL final. Whilst it's nowhere near the same level - possession football can't be stopped by just a CDM player who is their to shield an attack pentrating more than breaking down possesion earlier on & higher up the pitch. You have to counter press & we haven't done enough of that today.

Thanks. Yeah our midfield has been non existent, doesn’t help our defence have been absolutely dross with the ball at their feet. I probably could have guessed this would happen with a midfield trio of Barkley, Delph and Rice mind you.

You are great guy. I apologize. Happy to see tactically we have turned things round and our midfield is ticking now.

Iirc he had at least 5 man of the match awards last season, hes still only 20 and has just completed his first full season as a DM. Was the outstanding player against United, Arsenal and among the best player against Spurs away from home from what i can remember...

He's been painfully average in this game. The number of sideways and back passes have been unreal. Tbf to him he did pass more positively in the last 10mins.

Don't bother mate.

Yes a balanced midfield that works together.

So it would serve for your CDM do be capable of more than just breaking play up then? As I say, if that's all he can do, he's got to be amazing at it.

You often get this with young players breaking through; their performances are wildly over exaggerated. And when they are required to step up and perform in a better team, they're found wanting.

I can't see the future but this lad is 20 to be fair. He is already good at it & isn't something I see him struggling to continue improving.

He won the Player’s Player of the Year (as well as the fan’s Young Player of the Year and an award for the best individual performance of the season) so it is fair to say that you are just plain wrong here.

That applies more to energetic and explosive players, the impact of youth... The difference is, Rice's biggest asset is his composure & reading of the game, something that take years for some players to reach a similar level

Fans are excited because they’ve got a young player coming through the ranks, it’s happens all the while. Please point me towards a midfielder as limited as Rice playing for a top team.

There must be better out there in Europe and beyond. He’s not worth the sort of money mentioned.

What’s that based on? It’s simply young players. It’ll settle down, and once people realise he’s really quite poor on the ball, those forgivable aspects of his game become a problem. If he is going to play for a top team, he’s going to have to contribute way more than what he is now. If he can’t, he better be a beast defensively, which he is not.

The only traits people are citing as his main strengths are CB strengths. I haven’t heard a single point or case to sell me him as a midfielder.

He’s looked quite poor on the ball I have to say. He and Chillwell just making really poor decisions with it or passing poorly but I mean he is touted as being more a defender and ending up as a CB

That's where I personally want to see the lad play. As a CDM that drops in between 2 CB to create a back 3 or a back 5 depending on our needs. He can be the first one from playing so deep to make an interception before passing to the BPD's next to him to initiate a quick counter attack.

That would work if we played with proper wing backs and decent ball playing CBS. We have neither!
