You can argue that he is too expensive, but anyone not rating Declan Rice has no clue about football.

United desperately need a stronger driving force in midfield. But I agree there will be a lot of competition to sign him. And with West Ham doing well under the excellent David Moyes, he may well not be in any hurry to leave.
Definitely needed at OT if we are to compete with and beat Chelsea.
Hey at least it's cheaper. I wasn't implying that foreign talent > English talent, but the prices for English players are astronomical. Even the price for Trippier is ridiculous.
Rice is absolute quality. Watched him in 5 or 6 games this season and he looks stronger fitter and is everywhere for that West ham team.
Price is gonna be mental, but if we losing pogba, donny, cavani, mata, martial and poss Lingard it frees up some wages and transfer funds.

This is it for me too.
I get the money thing but if someone doesn't really rate Rice as a player then it's like their understanding of tactics is slightly flawed to me because out of everything - whether it's technique, power, skill or whatever; he is just class tactically as a player at the age of 22.
I can say it with just 6 simple words -
"Rice just happens to be there."

We're going to have a serious dilemma if we do sign him (in a good way), without outgoings we'd have:
Jorginho, Kante, Kovacic, Mount, Gilmour, Loftus-Cheek, Gallagher, Rice and Barkley all in there!
I'd imagine Barkley will be sold and one of Gilmour/Gallagher will go out on loan again but that's some serious depth

This thread is full of people claiming he's bang average because he hasn't got a flamboyant surname....and he's English.
Many of whom who have gone quiet since Declan carried over the same form from last season into this season and also added a few improvements to his game.
Shame that he'd cost the world if we wanted him.

I don't see why anyone would want us to pay what West Ham would want for him. He'd cost more than Pogba and we can all agreed we overpaid there, why make the same mistake? He will not add close to £70-100m worth of value to the team. We're not a team one Declan Rice away from winning the league either.
Because the media has brainwashed everyone into thinking he’s Roy Keane times 10x, when really he’s just a good/decent midfielder.
He is 22. He can be a United player for 10+ years. Still has a room to grow. He's already a great player.

I'm not dismissing him as a good player, because he clearly, is but a DM rarely adds that sort of value to a team, vs the players we'd still need to buy.
Sure, 100m is expensive. But when you see Sancho sat on the bench, £73m at 21 years old and a forward line up we're struggling to get all of our quality players into you surely must question would we have got more for our money/minutes out of our money in Declan Rice? I'm glad we got Sancho, I think it would have been a mistake not to.
But I still think Rice would have bolstered our squad hugely. Pound for pound, what we needed more in my opinion, would have been a Declan Rice. Fred/Mctominay would be struggling between themselves to start over him.
After watching the Spurs game in this current system I would love him along Scott and ship Fred to a different club. If we are going for the two DM approach we need presence and Fred is not giving that. A long term spine type of player for sure. GK, Maguire, Rice and Bruno could certainly be the core for the first 11 of this club. I also wasn't into him a year or two back but he made me a believer.
I didn't realise he has a contract essentially until 2025, yeah he ain't gonna be going anywhere cheaply for at least another couple of years
He's quality but I'm not sure he's exactly what we need in midfield. And if you're paying 100m plus, you better be sure he's exactly what you need. I would prefer someone more in the Carrick mold, who can sit in front of the back four and control the game. Like Rodri or Joringho. Rice would be the perfect partner alongside someone like that.
I don't see in Rice that Keane's aggressiveness, energy, and nimbleness. Rice is closer to Henderson (Livpool) than Keane.

He is a leader like Keane and he can go on a marauding run like Keane because he is surprisingly consistently press resistant for someone who doesn't look the most technical to the eye. He just gets out of tight areas.
He isn't end to end like Keane though. I don't really see Keane in him really except him being Irish. I don't see anything Henderson about him either.
The 2 players he reminds me of is a combination of how Matic plays for us when he drops in to a back 3 for us & a how ten Hag used Frenkie de Jong for ajax during the Ajax semi final CL run. Frenkie De Jong would drop in between the central back 2 to receive the ball and decide to either make a pass between them, pass forward, or go on a dribbling run from deep.
Frenkie De Jong is the technically superior player and the better player (more creativity, passing, shooting, dribbling etc) but Rice is the better defensive player/alternative because he cuts out the passing lanes of the opposition, more tackles, more positioning by reading the game and not going too far unless he sees it as a defensively sensible thing to do.
It's what I call the false CB, playing like a false 9 inbetween 2 CB'S. It's my favourite role in football at the moment.
I'm hoping that Ole can get Rice in and then Ten Hag can manage Rice how he managed Frenkie De Jong if he becomes our new manager.
Hell, if he can entice Frenkie here too that would be just a dream come true.

I really doubt it man, he is a Dutch Barcelona player which is pretty much that clubs 2nd club and Country.
He knew where he was going when he was at Ajax. Barcelona have spend Millions and Millions over 110, 130, 150's on players like Coutinho, Griezmann and Dembele.
If he wants to come here we first need something to maybe entice him (maybe a manager like Ten Hag at United), then we are going to give them a proper dembele type of transfer fee to make them think about it.
I know moyes has said Rice is over 100 mil now, I doubt that's going to happen when Rice said he wasn't happy being labeled as a 100 mil player himself. It maybe closer to it than ever though because his numbers likes goals and assists are better than they ever was last year and it's not even half way through the season.

He’d be too expensive with his current contract, and by the time it runs down, Chelsea (and maybe Newcastle) will be in the mix. It’s going to be difficult to get him, but he’s a special player.
Barca are in dire need of cash right now. And while there was always the Dutch- Barca connection, United historically also had a very good Dutch connection: Stam, Ruud, RvP, VDS all close to club legends.
But I agree, I don't think De Jong would fancy us unless Ten Hag is here.
I actually though that until we get someone of De Jong's ilk, Ten Hag would play Pogba in that role, but I don't think we'll find out.
Personally I haven't seen Rice play a live match so can't comment, but he seems to be developing nicely which is a good thing. The bad thing is as you said, he will require a Maguire like fee to lure over.
Watch Rice live for West Ham when you have time.
I decided to do it to see if he was good or bad as people were talking and decided he was good and he is a joy to watch. Don't do it for England because England are all held back by 10-20%.
People who don't understand him call him "just a CB playing in midfield".
When you watch him though what you see is a sole player that allows a teams 4 man defensive line formations - ie:
AWB - Varane - Maguire- Shaw
LCM-Rice
Play with a kind of faux 3 man defensive line formationLCM-Rice

AWB- CM CAM- Shaw
The LCM also gets alot more freedom as seen with west ham with Soucek is on the other end of the pitch compared to Rice.AWB- CM CAM- Shaw
Rice is constantly deciding where to be, to be in midfield or to drop down to defence in a back 3, to guard his CB'S by cutting the opposition lines in front of them or by chasing after the ball when there is enough people back, to go on a run himself or just recycle possesion across his other players.

Rice sounds like a very intelligent player in the Carrick mould. Doesn't do lots of Hollywood passes, but he's the glue that keeps the team together and makes it tick. Interesting.
He'd be great for us. If we had him now it would allow us to play him and it would also get the best out of Pogba next to him.

Not just a good footballer, but seems like a likeable guy. Really hope he continues to improve. Such a joy to watch.
When did he sign a new contract? Haven't seen anything to suggest he has a contract passed 2024.
