Declan Rice

Maybe it's an unpopular opinion but I would give Jesse and Fred, maybe some money too, for Rice. Would set us in midfield, and give them attacking option and also a midfielder so close to the end of the window.

The other option would be a loan deal for Gueye. Not like he's starting at PSG.

Wondered if Monaco would be interested in Donny. Using him in part exchange would solve a problem as it doesn’t look like he’ll ever fit in for you. Tchouameni looks better on the ball than Rice is and I don’t get the idea that Rice is “proven in the Premier League”. He’s proven at West Ham’s level. He’d be okay for United but his limitations would frustrate.
Also for England, no?

And his time at West Han has them punching way above their weight.

He's supposed to make space for the other players. He had multiple other easy passes and often did a pass further away to a player without space who then got closed down. He has shown time and time again he doesn't know how to play that role.
How is he supposed to make space for other players playing in a deeper role with the issues I've already explained? I've explained to you in my previous post that pass options are created by the movement of other players which then creates passing options and connects the midfield, fullbacks, wide forwards (triangles) which in turn unhinges the opposition defensive structure, which creates space. But there was none of that and to expect a midfielder to control a game in such conditions is unrealistic.

Fred is not the good for nothing player, he is being portrayed as. Play him in a midfield , with a good DM and he will shine. Note that him and mctom were being hailed as a good partnership, not so long ago. Its not his fault that he was left to fend alone in the midfield against a much more physically strong side.

Gueye started yesterday and played a brilliant pass in the build up to Mbappe's first goal.

I think Rice would suit us just fine.

If West Ham want to value him at £100,000,000 then he can justifiably and immediately demand a £400,000 weekly pay check to match the price tag and salary of similarly priced players. That should focus West Ham's attention and cause a few sweaty brows in their boardroom. Ah well, maybe January...

Still unsure if he will join us or Chelsea when he leaves but looks very much like he is the top target

Doesn't he openly support Chelsea, best friends with Mount and wants to go there. Surely if Cheslea want him (which has been reported)he is not going to choose us.

Hopefully this isn't our midfield Haaland. Because I don't see either joining us to be honest.

The discipline of Rice for me places him as the best defensive midfielder available under Solskjaer's management.

Rio made a very good point about why Fred isn't great in the midfield he (Fred) runs around loads because he doesn't read the game effectively. Fred is not a midfield 'obstacle' whereas the likes of Rice, Busquets and Fernandinho position themselves to cover spaces where they don't have to run tirelessly. Rice also displayed this during the euro's was easily England's best midfielder.

It's not the on ball quality of Rice that is most important it's his positioning in the system. It's instinctive you cannot teach a player to read the game, it's their own intelligence and intuition.

Solskjaer and senior staff (including Carrick and Fletcher!) will know that CM needs sorting.

I can only imagine the reason it hasn’t been is because the CM they’ve identified wasn’t available this summer. Rice just seems to fit into this squad they’re building IMO. I can see us going for him in 2022

Lampard wanted him.

I don't think Tuchel thinks he is worth what he would cost.

The Chelsea correspondents have reported that he would join Chelsea above all else if they made a move. Mount is also his best mate, according to what's been reported.

Not getting him, and honestly not too bothered- he really isn’t that great (doesn’t pass the ball well enough for me) and i think Mctominay can do what he does to a certain extent. What I don’t understand is why we don’t get creative- try to get someone useful on loan. We could’ve tried for Gueye, Herrera (i know that will be unpopular but he’s better than what we have rn) or even someone like Rennato Sanches. We have a great team but the last two games have easily shown that we need someone who can pass the ball and link midfield and attack. If Garner is actually good, then maybe we shouldn’t have loaned him out and at least have had him in the squad to see what he can do with the first team. I just hope not getting a midfielder in doesn’t end up costing us big time.

If we had Jorginho and Kante in our squad, I wouldn’t give Rice a second thought.

Surely any CM signing right now would have to be someone exceptional. Like Verratti (sp)

Marco now there is a top drawer CM but that one is definitely a pipe dream

Yeah I think he will go there as well especially with the family connection and Mount of course

Would bite your hand off for Rice. We won't win the league with the current holding options. Even though I love Mctominay.

They're quite slow at getting deals done, (Kounde) unlike us (Ronaldo) so I wouldn't putting past them messing things up.

What we need to do is hack into Leicester’s scouting network and sign their top two next midfield targets. They consistently get it right. Forget Rice.

Cant disagree with Rio. I have a theory why VdB was bought. He was meant to be paired with Matic-type CM in most of the games. the latest instance of their partnership was friendly against Everton. He is patiently waiting for the partner. Rice is ideal for him. Also, Rice can be paired with Pogba as an option.

They go for unestablished players which we haven't done much except the likes of Amad and Pellestri.

He's from London, he wouldn't have to move far or at all, was originally in their academy and one of his best friends is in the team. That doesn't mean he wouldn't have an interest or want to play for us, but Chelsea obviously has a hell of a starting pitch.

Yeah if he's earning 60k per week, no way they should value him at 100M. He should be asking for 200-250k minimum. 400k is a bit much considering his position and that only 1 player in the PL gets that much(Ronaldo).

This is why I'm interested in him.

Some people will bring up his lack of passing and its hard to disagree with that -

But then you watch him and you also see a player that is actually defensively controlling that inner depth of your own half.

I think in the Euros - I hardly saw an attack occur against the English central defence.

I think about the opposition having to attack :

De Gea
AWB-Varane-Maguire-Shaw
Rice
And it doesn't look easy, 5 very good defensive outfield players and one good goalkeeper.

The other attacking 5 should really have a freedom to do their thing, never mind the ability of our fullbacks to get forward and help them too as we turn to a compensatory back 3 to accommodate the attack.

That is what we see with Matic and its why I believe Rice is the replacement for Matic - even if he isn't the replacement for Carrick.

Of course they do. Problem is money doesn't grow on a tree. Imo we had a very good window already.

If we can loan a decent midfielder before the window closed it'd be perfect. For example Arthur Melo from Juve worth a try imo. They have load of midfielders and don't use him at all.

Absolutely. As well as Maguire and our back line played at the Euros, a big reason for that was the work Rice was doing in front of them.

Rice would make an enormous difference to us even though it’s very unlikely to happen. It’s hard not to be happy about Ronaldo coming back but it’s even harder for me to accept we’ve not addressed our MF problems too.

We should have moved at the start of this window with Lingard plus 40m offer

I'm pretty sure they would have done plenty to get a deal done. I really doubt the whole world can see our deficiencies and our coaching staff can't.

However, to make a deal happen, all 3 parties, or 4 in this case, involved have to want make it happen.

Ronaldo coming was great for sentimentality, I doubt he will increase our goal output by much because I think he will just take goal scoring chances and time away from other forwards but I am still happy with him because along with Ramos there is no better clutch player in world football.

But you have to have a great team behind in order to get to those clutch moments and we won't be getting there with that midfield behind him. Rice would fit the culture that Ole wants to instill but I don't think he is a player that's so good that we designate his as either him or no one. A couple young players in the French league like Tochouameni will have a similar impact on our team, maybe not as good but certainly enough to provide our forwards the platform to perform.

Waiting a year for him when it's so clear that this midfield we have will hurt us is beyond idotic for me because we are sacrificing one season of competitiveness for one player. Its not a given that if we do get him next year we will be as good as City or Chelsea because it appears that Pogba will feck off if we endure another season of toil so we will need to major signings, which the board won't allow, to reach the potential we could have had if had been decisive with this position this summer.

The management has basically written off a whole season because they lack the strategic flexibility to move on from an unattainable target to a more realistic one.

West ham would probably feel more comfortable selling him to us than Chelsea.

Without wanting to sound negative, and much as I’m sure Ronaldo will score goals, the service he will get here will be tough unless we improve massively.

Yeah he's not the ideal DM by any means, but he might well be what the team needs at the moment. We have so much firepower upfront, and creativity in Pogba and Bruno, we don't necessarily need a DM who can dominate possession or cut defences open.

If we can somehow agree a deal involving cash and Lingard, we'll have had a bloody fantastic transfer window.

Totally fair. Look how few chances we gave Cavani on Sunday. It took a moment of individual brilliance with a bit of luck for Greenwood's goal.

For the players we have, thus far we still often look blunt. Hopefully things improve.

All the firepower is useless if we cant get the ball to them. We often have this problem. Teams often sit off Fred and McT knowing they are toothless with the ball. And press Matic and Pogba heavily knowing they struggle with high press.

We need someone to link the defense and attack. But I wouldnt say no to Rice as an upgrade on Fred/McT. I'm just not sure if it will fix our midfield, its just an upgrade(not sure how big either).

If Ole doesn't come up with a solution to the midfield then we are done for the season, Ronaldo or no Ronaldo. Southampton and Wolves have basically proved that our midfield crumbles under any form of pressure - imagine what a Chelsea, a Liverpool or even City can do. Then there is the likes of Everton and Spurs with the playing resources to punish the sloppiness we have displayed so far.
