If he doesn't, then Casemiro does. We've seen him be a real threat when he gets forward this year.

I could see both Casemiro and Rice being great next to each other, both getting forward and both sitting when needed.

I don't think we will get Rice to be honest. Keep saying it in different threads. If we did sign Rice, him Kane, Kim, and a good GK makes a title challenge a genuine option.
 
It seems we are obsessed with getting an overpriced British player in. If this is the case I would prefer Rice over Kane or Mount as I believe he would make the biggest impact in the team.

I'm doubtful on that. I'm not sure that pairing would have enough quality on the ball. Rice and Casemiro are both ideally paired with someone better than either of them in that aspect of the game.
 
The addition of a central midfielder this summer should be a priority for United. Rice is a top player. He is one of the best defensive midfielders in Europe. Undoubtedly. He has an elite ball-winning ability and he has been playing consistently well for his club and country. Rice would make a difference to our midfield he's still only 24, and he has not peaked yet, his best years are still in front of him and I am confident of ETH coaching would make him a better midfielder. He will be massive for United. He will add more physicality to our midfield and he would fit into this United midfield and compliment Casemiro’s style of play. Yes people are banging on about the fee but thats driven by the market. Clubs will have to pay what West Ham want if they want him that bad. I expect West Ham to dig their heels in here and hold out for what they want. In my opinion 80/90 million would be about right. If we can't afford Rice we should go for an alternative that is better than what we already has. In fact every incoming player should be better than what we currently has. Otherwise we are just giving away free wages for non factors.

If we can move McTominay, Fred and VDB all on then I’m all for Rice as I think he allows Casemiro to play more box to box which as seen this season Casemiro is very good on the ball and as a goal threat which he wasn’t able to show at Real.

It’ll also add a much more solid feel to the midfield as positionally, tactically and strength wise Casemiro and Rice is about as solid as it gets, you do worry if it’s creative enough but then I think if Kane is added into the team he adds creativity as much as he does goal scoring.

Haven't West Ham been linked strongly with Maguire too ? Maybe throw Maguire in as a £30-£40 million makeweight ? Maybe Maguire plus £50 million cash could work for Moyes or even as unlikely as swap deals are we offer West Ham Maguire and McTominay for Rice ?

He usually is, but just said in the Mount thread - with our priority being a striker, we're going to drop £150m on Mount and Rice? It doesn't make sense at all.

No it doesn’t, might be just agent fluff. But Mokbel would have to be spectacularly wrong if we weren’t in for these two at the very least

You are getting carried away With Casemiro making occasional runs is quite different from being deployed as actual box to box midfielder which requires greater stamina and energy not to mention different skill set as well .

Big if in case we do get Rice and he gets paired with Casemiro then he would be primarily deployed as no 8 , Casemiro would still be our CDM .

But as you said it's quite one dimensional pairing lacking in creativity ideally we need a different profile of midfielder .
 
I've warmed up to the idea of signing him over the last few months and now think a lot of his qualities are underrated by fans.

What makes the signing very appealing is that he covers Casemiro's deficiencies on and off the ball.
 
Im so glad this is sounding like its taking pace.

Rice is more about a science than an art & thats why some people find it hard to get wondered by him to the eyes.

The guy is able to play CB, CDM, CM, CAM all at the same time depending on what exactly he decides to do and when he decides to do it.

We are able to play a back 3 momentarily depending on where Rice positions himself or switch to a double pivot, play as a temporary deep lying playmaker, or switch to a midfield 3 as he dribbles it progressively up the midfield or take long shots from the edge of box.

People think hes overrated because Southgate only uses him 1 way - Deep almost as a 3rd CB & it looks like he has no ability but thats more to do with southgate's managerial ability than Rice's.

fantastic player for a manager.
 
I like him but £100m, fecking hell. That plus the £55m on Mount? We'd need to sell a lot if we want any decent striker.

It would be defensively solid but I don't think it's a good pairing. Aside from his athleticism, the only quality I think Rice has that Casemiro lacks is being able to drive with the ball. Ultimately it depends on what ETH is trying to do and if we imagine Bellingham and FDJ were ideal preferred options, Rice is a completely different player to both.
 
My only real reservation with Rice has been the cost. If we can somehow get him in but still have money for other needed transfers then by all means.
 
Rice and Kane would be amazing. I think both Jassim and Ratcliffe would sanction it too.

Get KMJ and a keeper and we’re seriously cooking.
 
Rice is such a good footballer. There's not much he can't do in midfield. Maybe he's not the most creative passer in the world, but apart from that I think he's excellent.

I just wish the takeover was confirmed and we knew our prospects in the market. In the current situation it's really hard to justify this.
 
If you believe reports, Rice, Kane and Mount would be a transfer fee outlay of 250m. If you add wages etc, then you realise it's all bollocks
 
My guess would be that it's Rice or Mount and not both. The club are probably just working on more than one transfer at once (something people have been clamouring for) and if their #1 target falls through the back up option is already lined up.

They aren't remotely similar players though.
 
If we can use Maguire as a makeweight then I’m all for this and if we move McTominay, Fred and VDB on too then that’d be unreal.

Would give us options though. Can play just one of them if one needs a rest or is injured or we could play them both against tougher opposition. Think they can both either stay back or play b2b so it would work I think.
 
People get a bit hung up on assigning midfielders specific roles or about whether they can compliment the midfielder next to them if their skillsets are similar. In reality there have been lots of great midfields where the two players were very good at similar things; Keane and Ince, Vieria and Petit, even Modric and Kroos in some ways. Can't remember the name but there was a player that used to play alongside Schweinstiger many years back and they both were extremely powerful central midfielders that could do a bit of everything.

Casemiro and Rice would be more than fine as a two. That's a very physically tough and technically good combination.

Rice is more mobile, carries the ball better and passes it more efficiently. He is closer to De Jong than Bellingham.

I see them as similar players, which is reinforced by watching Rice's recent film. If ETH thinks it will work then I'm all for it.
