I think you will find that while VDS and the Great Dane aged at the club they were not in decline and left on their own terms against the wishes of Fergie.
Not saying that they did. But just my general point is that I don't see anything that sticks out on Hendersons game that would put him in that bucket potentially. Might be a flawed view of goalkeepers, but its what we're used to. 24 of the previous 30 years, we've had Schmeichel, VDS or DDG. All in between have been fill ins and chopping and changing and under pressure to prove it, when realistically just not quite good enough. I doubt Henderson takes over seamlessly and is a top goalkeeper right away. Fear his level might be more along the lines of Everton.

VDS didn't (indeed he was probably the best keeper in the world in his last season), but Schmeichel's last season was definitely his worst. If I remember correctly he was even given a small break midseason to try to get him performing again. It did seem to work as the second half of the season was definitely better, but the signs were there. He's said that in hindsight he wishes he'd asked Fergie to rotate him more which might have allowed him to stay at the top longer, but he was too proud to do that as he wanted to play every game. He felt he couldn't do that anymore so he left.

I asked which GKs you were referring to and you presumed because they had been at the club for a while they must have been in decline and that was not the case.
Even the best GKs have a dip in form and maybe DeGea has had his as he is looking sharp again as the best shot stopper around as while he has never been a great all round GK he is the best shot stopper I have seen.
Henderson was outstanding in his loan spells and if I was you I would let fear take a back seat and just try and enjoy a young product of our club stake a claim to be a really good keeper for our club.

Rotation doesn’t work for goalkeepers. Reality is, for me, that he needs a De Gea injury for about 6 weeks and then it’s aink or swim. Either that or we simply make a decision and sell De Gea and risk with him.
No young goalkeeper ever earned their spot at a big club by impressing in the cups. It is almost always as a result of a chance afforded by injury then the rest was history.

I never said they declined, not sure where you got that from. I'm saying we had 3 goalkeepers who were among the best in the world until their decline (or they left). De Gea hasn't been the best in the world the last 2 years, nowhere close, thats why talk started coming up for the goalkeeper position again. Schmeichel left while on top, Van der Sar retired while still being a great goalkeeper. I never presumed anything, was young during Schmeichels time at United so its fuzzier but more than old enough at Van der Sars to have watched every single match he played for us!

Anyway, my point is this. We had 3 pretty much all time greats as our goalkeepers over the past 30 years. The others in between lasted not very long as the starters. So unless Henderson can reach a Schmeichel/VDS/DDG level, I'm not sure if he'll be the starter more than a few seasons, assuming he even takes over from De Gea. Which is far from a guarantee. De Gea isn't that old, slight chance he wants to move back to Spain possibly so Henderson gets the gig, but if not, DDG is the better goalkeeper and Henderson won't wait around for him to leave forever.

He is a proud man but he regretted his decision to leave us as he still was the best going around;

If you put in (or they left) on your original post I would not have asked the question obviously.
Common sense really but if the GK was not really good they would not get the chance to even go into decline at a top club as they would be moved on.
Don’t be surprised if someone creates a thread titled ; ‘The Resurgence Of DeGea’ in the future.
It’s a fickle crowd

He needs a run of games.
Nothing wrong with his performance but still not looking like the confident keeper he was last year.

This! People have really short memories.

When De Gea joined us, he was a leaky cauldron and was benched by the mighty Lindegaard for a good portion of the season. Only when Lindegaard was injured and the pressure was off did De Gea start to shine.

Dean needs time and consecutive games. A game here and there and constantly being dropped isn't going to help. Just look at the whole Howard vs Caroll fiasco we had in the mid 00's

But de Gea doesn’t deserve to be dropped. Many clean sheets lately, including in the last two games - how does it warrant a run of games for Henderson? If anything, de Gea performs better this season, and there is only one GK position on the field...

Henderson has done nothing to show that he’s a better keeper than de Gea. That’s why he’s not selected over him.

I don't think he's going to make it here.

But time to give him a chance now. Let's see what he's got till the end of the season. De Gea doesn't win us any points and is a liability.

He has to play. You got to see if he's good enough. Give him until May and access this in June. Either see if he's good enough or buy a new keeper in the Summer.

Give him a chance. If he makes mistakes you can at least put it down to age and say he'll learn from them unlike De Gea who's best years are behind him.

After all his talk pre season about wanting to beat De Gea to the first team position, if he still cannot displace Dave this season then he never will. De Gea needs replacing and if it’s not by Henderson then we need to look into the transfer market.

Whatever little I have seen of him he is not that different from De Gea similar weaknesses he is not sweeper keeper, doesn't command the box well either mostly stuck on the line relying on his reflexes ,should have been sold after his decent spell with Sheffield but now we are stuck with two keepers who aren't good enough .

Being a good PL goalkeeper alone is not enough. Look at Tim Howard for example. You need a top class or world class keeper. Dean is definitely good enough for PL teams keeper after what he has shown with Sheffield United.

Honestly, I don't know what to do with Dean for the rest of this season, I think this is one of Ole's toughest decision to make because DDG might make mistakes but he is still much more experienced enough compared to Dean who is still baby for a keeper in top level.

However, next season he has to go on loan and proves himself that he is a top keeper if he wants to play for United. In meantime, we will sign a new top keeper because we can't afford 4th years of DDG making mistakes again. We had put our faith in him last season and this season but there is a limit.

If Ole didn't intend to play him this season, he should've sent Henderson on loan and keep Romero as backup. It'd be even better because at this point I'd feel more confident with Romero in goal than De Gea.

I'd play Dean in most games until the end of the season, just use DDG against top sides. I don't see what we have to lose. Since we have very narrow chance of winning the season, we need to start looking for some obvious answers so that we know what to do in the summer.

Because regardless of whether Henderson is/will be good enough, it's clear we can't go into another season with David as first keeper.

Start him for the rest of the season and let's see how good he really is. If he isn't, we have to find a new keeper in double quick time.

We need to not repeat those years after Schmeichel left. Bosnich, Barthez, Taibi, Carroll, Howard... yeughhhh

Should get the chance full time next season, none of this half in half out. Let them have the chance full time so they can prove it. If not, they'll never improve or show consistency or show what they can be.

De Gea has shown he can't be the guy anymore. Give Henderson the role next season, sit through some rough periods and just hope he gets there. If not, then replace in 22.

I'm hoping that the idea was that Henderson could come in and take over if De Gea was as bad as he had been the last two seasons. De Gea being a bit better this season has postponed that plan, although I wonder how long 'not as bad as the last two seasons' is going to get him if he's still not good enough. Hopefully Henderson gets that proper run now, but to be honest I don't think Ole will do it.

Unleash him already. Give him the starting sport for the league and assess him properly til the summer. Make or break. He isnt any worse than De Gea, at least currently, but i believe he can improve from here if he gets the trust and consistent game time.

Yeah it's what Ole needs to do but won't happen in my opinion

First time we have a sniff of being in a title race for 8 years and you want to chuck in a rookie keeper for the run in?

He should get his chance again to be soon on top tomorrow. It’s all set up nicely for him.

I haven't been that impressed by Henderson but he's a got a serious opportunity to make an impression over the next couple of weeks (I'm assuming he's starting vs Sociedad)

It's so strange that people have come up with a judgement about him being not good enough based on such a small sample size . He is in a bad position because any time he does play the spotlight is on him and people are ready to pounce on any mistake . I think it would be nice for him to get a run of games in succession to build up some confidence and give us a better idea. Of course if he is a complete disaster then we can drop him but otherwise let's give him 8-10 games in a row

Big decision for ole to make, I don’t think we can rely on de gea to be the keeper to help us win the league anymore and hendo is still a question mark. Does ole gamble and play dean til the end of the season in the hope he steps up? Think if we’re ever gonna trust him to be our number 1 now is the time to give him a run of games

Man Utd 1:0 West Ham
Should have done enough today to start the weekend.

He can do everything De Gea can't.

He comes for crosses.

Defence looks more comfortable with Henderson there it has to be said. He didn't have a lot to do tonight but he looked confident, and we didn't look flustered when the ball went into our area on the few occasions it did.

He needs a run of games. Fed up of his Spanish counterpart gifting the opposition points. But he will start on the bench like always.

What he did in the 90th minute would have won us 3 points on Saturday.

I see no reason why we shouldn’t give him a run. Let’s see what he’s properly about.

Whether he’s good enough to replace DDG can only be determined by giving him a run of games in the PL. Did everything right today, should get his chance now for the remainder of the season to be #1.

Found it so funny when he got a catch with 3 minutes left & just sat on the ball . Then he got a free kick with 2 minutes left and he hit it straight out of touch . Maybe he has been reading redcafe
