De Gea's Distribution

An absolute disaster. It's been that way for a while. Every clearance goes directly to the opponent in the centre circle. It's madness.

His floor kicking, either from a restart or with a live ball, has become atrocious in recent months.

Kicking the ball out couldn't even be called distribution, it's goalkeeping basics every goalkeeper should do. He is getting worse and worse at it.

It has always been terrible. Probably the worst in the league he’s not self aware enough just to hoof it.

It’s a problem.

Yea I remember him routinely lofting passes to midfielders feet like it was nothing.

Changes in coaching method and approach?
I think the fact van Gaal wanted us to play out from the back benefited him greatly. We don't prioritise that as much since and I think this is the effect it's having. Still, he probably shouldn't be this bad.

That's one of the reasons Ter Stegen is better than him.

He was very good when he started with us. Almost like a good quarterback. Has deteriorated constantly from them on. Right now it couldn't be any worse.

He was close to VdS but probably worse when he first joined. Does feel like he's gotten worse since but we've seen plenty of keepers that have far better distribution than VdS or De Gea ever had. No fecking way was he like a quarter back.

Yep.

I'm grateful to him, but for several reasons, I'm not particularly anxious about his contract situation one way or the other.

Consistently called him out numerous times on his kicking... it is downright awful. Joe Hartesque.

I think it's harsh to say he has always been this bad, under LVG his balls out to Fellaini were a big part of our game and he played them very well. He seems to have gotten a lot worse since then, most of the time he just seems to poorly kick into a random bad area rather than at least aim for a player or specific area of the pitch.

Just to follow up on that. Here's a few examples (1, 2 and 3) of games where his kicking was so bad people had to mention it, and in amongst that the narrative was his kicking was "uncharacteristically" bad. It was basically every month people would say that. So when people thought about his kicking they'd remember the good games and erase the bad games, and come to the conclusion he had great distribution. I don't think he ever did.

He was definitely various levels above Joe Hart though. Whatever's happened in recent times brings him bizarrely close to that level. Still much more comfortable on the ball but so careless in what he does with it.

Strangely, De Gea's distribution is poor when going long, he has no problem playing with his feet along the ground.

He consistently hooks the ball when he has to hit it first time.

Don't really want to start another thread.

One of the World's best keepers who makes ridiculous reaction saves from six yards.

Just can't get over how bad he is at reading penalty run ups, dives far too early for a start. If he holds his ground a bit longer I'm sure he can save the ones that don't go right in the corner.

Beginning to think he is going to decline similar to Casillas

You may be right but I remember it being pretty good during his time under Sir Alex (don't remember who was the goal keeping coach back then). Don't remember which specific games but I remember him distributing pin point in certain games in those early years. Will have to check youtube for vides when I have more time.

It has progressively gotten worse since then for some reason, though. It's to a point where it is quite easily the worst part of his game. At this moment, I cannot tell who is the worse between him and Romero, who is atrocious with his distribution.

Yeah it's bizarre. There's few keepers I have less hope in saving penalties

It was the Spurs game which I watched at the stadium - the first half Martial and Rashford were free of their markers continually - only for Dave to mishit the long ball constantly. Obviously he made it up with his second half display
