De Gea contract talk | Signs new deal

Totally agree on Deano, said this on Twitter on got hammered by the "Footy Manager" United fans on there who think we have 500m to spend every summer.

If and it is a huge if, De Gea did leave, I would love to see how Deano developed, he could probably do with a full season in the Premier League on loan but I love his confidence, wanted guarantees before signing a new deal, has been through all the levels with England now established in the U21s, has in my opinion been the best keeper in the Championship this year, which includes Butland.

He is ready for the step up and he will be playing Premier League football next year, at 22 he could become a top world class keeper but if we went and paid 100m for Oblak, Deano would probably look elsewhere.

Got hammered yesterday for saying love seeing youth given a chance at United, Deano would be my shout ahead of Romero (I know seems harsh as he has been class), and defo Pereira.

Deano, Hendo, defo u r his mato

I personally would sign Donnarumma from AC Milan and let him develop into a world class keeper. We also have Henderson who is doing well on loan..

He's not as good as some might think + his agent is Mino

If DDG wants to leave then our best course of action is to try and swap him with Courtois

This situation is a weird one. On one hand DDG is easily amongst the top 3 GKs in the world today, there's an argument to be made for him being the best. On the other hand his biggest strengths are his reflexes and quick movement on the line, both of which will deteriorate as he gets older. His command of the box, defensive organization and ball distribution have never been the best so I don't see him being absolutely world class for as long as VDS was, I think he'll follow a similar trajectory as Casillas, where with age his status as being among the best in the world will change. So to pay him such a high wage is a bit risky, but then replacing him is gonna cost us a bomb.

It might be an unpopular opinion but I would let him run down his contract next season, he's a pro and I don't think his performances will suffer because he's about to leave, and let him go for a free at the end of next season. In the meantime let Henderson play a season in the PL on loan and replace DDG with him for the 2020/21 season. If Henderson struggles in the PL, we could always buy a new GK in the next summer because this summer, I feel we have a lot of issues we need to address and its better to invest money in other positions.

Completely agree with this

and here I was thinking it was Mourinho stopping DDG from signing an extension and not his demands for ridiculous wages.

He has the right to ask for anything if he's looking at his situation, being the most consistent players in last years saving our arses several times and then he has to look at someone as Sanchez earning the most out of everyone thanks to Mr. Woodward brilliant ideas of contracts negotiation. How can you blame him for not asking for ridiculous wages ?

He'll be 29 this year and what ? Has only one league title and no CL. Time is running out for him and he'll want to win something big soon. If he's not winning anything here then at least he'll want loads of money for the services he's providing. Can't blame him. He'll never be recognized one of the best unless he starts filling his CV with big titles.

We're a terribly run club.

......or he could also be wanting to wait to see who our next manager (his next boss) will be for the next X number of years before deciding.

no GK is worth the money he's asking for. we got ourself into a mess with Sanchez and the board are totally culpable but DDG won't get that money outside of China. the club is right not to go above 350k. his level has also dropped from previous years and some of us had some doubts over his distributions and commanding of the box which didn't improve one bit.
everytime he goes to Spain he messes up so I don't even think he can handle the pressure of a bigger club like Madrid. he strikes me as a keeper who always has to be involved in shot stopping and last ditch saving but this is rather suited for a small club. a top club needs keeper who's very good in all areas- distributing, commanding, active in sweeping, shot stopping... ddg is like 10 in one aspect and then 4 or less in everything else. other top keepers are 7/8 in everything. if his reflexes go which is likely he won't be a top level keeper no more because there's little else.

He won't need to ask for the same amount of money at another club as :

a)He won't find a player who earns 350k a week while doing absolutely nothing and is one of the worst players at the club as Sanchez.
b)These clubs will offer him better chance to win big titles and major trophies unlike us.

At the moment he looks at United, we're pretty far away from winning the league, can only offer him money to stay and the highest earner of the squad is 350k a week stinking the place whenever he's not injured. Makes perfect sense he'll ask for ridiculous wages at these circumstances. That or he can try his luck at another club with better structure and more chances of winning titles.

The board fecked up with Sanchez but 2 wrongs don't make a right. We shouldn't cave in to his wage demands and if he feels he can get a better contract or he'll win more trophies elsewhere, then we should thank him for his services and let him go. We have been terribly run in the last few years but caving into ridiculous demands isn't gonna improve that.

Really seems like the Sanchez deal has had a detremential affect on the club now, in more ways than one. It would almost seem the best move would be to buy out his contract, since I doubt he can be sold, and move on. Every star we have will use the wages of that contract against us, and probably rightly so; it's a very strong negotiating tactic.

If De Gea actually wants £500k / wk, let him walk / sell him to Madrid. De Gea is worth a lot, but not that much and not with the follow on affect of destroying the wage structure like Sanchez has done. We already sold him to Madrid once, and it's been fortunate we've had him for these additional years. De Gea seems to have some affection for the club, but his dream is to play for Real. He's in too strong of a position and will never have a better opporutnity in his life to realize it, especially now with Zidane coming back into the fold.

The club should not give in to De Gea's demands. I'd be ok with either selling him now if it comes to it, but also letting him run down his contract next season and letting him go for free since it will buy us a season to correct the position. We have way too many needs this summer and adding a starting GK to that list makes it almost an insurmountable obstacle to overcome. Especially with our terrible record of actually being able to get transfers done.

Think you're putting way too much emphasis on Sanchez wages. He can't be blamed for everything.

With or without him we always knew it will be hard to renew De Gea's contract and I really doubt he is even asking for that kind of money.

Isn't giving him the contract he wants cheaper than buying a new keeper of similar quality like Oblak? Transfer fees are insane these days.

At 350K a week it makes sense financially, at 500K a week I don't think it does if we could sign Oblak for 75MIL.

But then wouldn’t Oblak, knowing he’s replacing De Gea, be looking for at least 300k per week on top of that fee?

And Oblak will want huge wages. It's not football manager.

De Gea is arguably our greatest goalkeeper ever and has been our best player for years now, who won us countless points over the years - so not a fecking wonder he wants to be paid in line with Sanchez. He'd be stupid not to be.

Besides, it's probably his last big contract so it's obvious he will want huge wages.

Also, I can actually see him leaving on a free. He'll stay for another couple of season earning huge money and then go to Madrid, Juve et al and get a huge signing on bonus.

Anyway, give the lad what he wants -- he's earned it and more importantly he's worth it.

One website says Oblak earns 90K per week at Atletico. So no, he won't expect 300K+ unless there is a bidding war for him. Oblak is also 2 years younger than De Gea which increases his value.

As good as De Gea is, if you give a goalkeeper 500K per week in wages, you are going to annihilate your wage structure. If we start turning down extortionate wage demands, it might help us in the future and show strength. If we get rid of Sanchez this summer it will put an end to it, but if we give de Gea 500K it will continue.

Also, Sanchez is on 350K a week isn't he? Reports say that's what we have offered de Gea, but he wants 500K. He deserves to be one of our best paid players due to his talent, experience and loyalty, but an extra 150K beyond what is already a ridiculous outlier in Sanchez is unacceptable imo.

There is no need to take risk on Oblak. I would swap DDG with Courtois + 20M if RM wants him so much. RM cannot afford 3 top class Keeper so would be happy to offload 1. Courtois is good enough for us, with some EPL experience.

He also prefers to stay in Spain .

Can we give him 250k a week and a 250k clean sheet bonus? We'll be winning a shit lot if we really end up paying him that full amount.

De Gea clearly the best keeper in the world and fully deserves a bumper contact. I think is waiting to see if Utd will finish in Champion league place and who be the next permanent manager. I hope Ed signs him up for 5years and adds a buyout clause... come on Ed what are you waiting for!!!!

He has no choice unless he wants to stay on as #3 keeper. RM needs to sell both if they take DDG.

I highly doubt Madrid will think about a keeper now. They have more urging issues. The attack needs reinforcement and Modric is hitting his 34 this year. Logic says attack and midfield will be their priority, while Courtois and Navas are pretty good keepers that can do the job.

PSG and Juve are those who need a GK and can see them thinking about buying De Gea.

IMO the question isn't "can we keep DDG" but "should we"?
He's been a hero to us for so long that it's difficult to separate emotion from the topic (so no offence meant to anyone) but while DDG is quite possibly the best stopper in the world he certainly can't be considered best keeper because he doesn't / can't command his box or get off his line and his distribution (both long and short from feet and hands) is woeful. I agree that his shot stopping must save us circa 12 points a season but, in the context of the modern game, his failure to support our attacks probably costs us that many or maybe even more.
I love the guy but I'm not blinded to his shortcomings and one thing to consider is that if we keep DDG we can't rebuild to become a team playing out from the back or playing with a high line because he doesn't have the skills to support expansive football from the back.
I would suppose that we really ought to engage a Director of Football so that we can settle on a style of play and then consider if DDG can cope with it or if he's become redundant due to the world moving on - as was Joe Hart who's no longer Englad, Englands No.1 because he couldn't meet the demands made of a modern keeper.

Goalkeeper is the least of our problems right now,we have good cover already without the need of Oblak etc,if Varane and Kroos are seriously up for sale I would trade in DDG plus cash immediately!

That's the best thing to do, get €100m from Madrid + Courtois. He's mad if he thinks he should get £500,000 p/w.

So, any trustworthy journos reporting that Dave's demanding 500k per week?

Yes just get 100Mil + a GK worth around 80Mill for a goalkeeper that has one year left on his contract..... More likely we get Courtois and pay Real 20 million for the pleasure.

Yea true... They should pay a fee for De Gea regardless though. We give them too many players damn it!

Never going to happen I don't think. They hold all the cards. Also, we haven't really given them that many players. Beckham, Ruud, Heinze and Ronaldo unless I've missed somebody? They gave us Di Maria and I doubt we were too sad to lose one of two of the players we sold.

Anyway, I do agree that the best outcome is for De Gea to leave and for us to get Courtois. I actually think he'd maybe be the better keeper for us and the contract talks seem to be getting out of hand. We seem to give him increases every couple of years. If we carry on like this we will pay him about 800K a week in 5 years time.
