De Gea contract talk | Signs new deal

He has no problems coming of his line. He struggled his first season after that he has been pretty flawless. We don’t let in goals because of his ability on set pieces. He is a club legend in my view and that will be undisputed after 6 more years here.
He really does struggle coming off his line, he doesn't do it nearly enough, the word legend is thrown around way too easily.

I'm honestly speechless, but at the same time not surprised with the way fans have been acting on here. It's crazy how often people regarded him as possibly our best ever and now they turn so viciously on him. I frequent player threads less and less these days because of things like this.
It's disgusting, really.
Club legend? Catch yourself on, he's a decent player who has done well for us, and also cost us on more than a few occasions, he is no legend. No player since saf retired can be classed as a legend.
Best keeper in the world for a number of years, and our best players for most of the time after SAF? Legend might be pushing it, but calling him a "decent player" is fecking criminal. Have a word with yourself.

It’s a tough situation. We either try and sell him now and potentially have to spend 80 million on a replacement or trust Henderson, who’s never played at this level. Or we wait a year, lose him on a free, risk him playing badly because his hearts not in it. Who knows how Henderson will do. May need to spend another 80 million with no incomings.

It’s a lot of money, but I think everyone would have been happy with it before March. Hopefully we can figure out what happened and help him get his mindset right. Personally, I’d make him captain. He might not be the most vocal, but I think he could do with a confidence boost and we don’t really have many options.
I think it’s just a massive commitment and we are in a position where we have so many players on wages that are so far above what they could get else where that it’s is starting to become a huge problem for us.

Look at the defender situation we’re trying to sign Maguire but we currently have 6 centre backs 5 of which seem to be unsellable. We have Sanchez who we have committed another 3 years to and won’t be able to shift.
We’ve just put Rashford on a wage that means he either has to become one of the world best strikers to justify his wage.

I’m a big fan of De Gea but commuting to paying a player for 6 years on a wage that means their is 0% of us been able to sell him if things don’t go well is a mistake. Espicailly when you have bright keeper coming up behind him in the ranks. Doubly so when the player is coming of a disappointing season, and will contribute to what is obviously becoming a massive problem at United which is the spiralling out of control wage demand of players.

Arsenal owners last week said they are a Europa league team that has champions league wage budget.

While we have more income then Arsenal we also have a much higher wage budget, correct me if I’m wrong but I fairly sure we have the second highest wage budget in world football? And we are paying that to a europa league squad and still offering bigger and bigger contracts all the time.

Woodward mentioned last year when the profits where announced that rise is wages where reducing profits, we’ve seen since Sanchez signed the expectations of what players expect in wages has drastically gone up. We are seeing the problems I knew selling players on wages more than they are worth is having in squad numbers.

We need to start getting a grip on our wage structure and we arnt we are doing the exact opposite.

This is so stupid. Are we even 100% sure he is better keeper than Romero? I wouldn't bet my life on it. Now we need to give bigger salary to Alexis and Pogba too.

What the feck are you talking about?

If it’s 6 year contract, he’ll end overtaking Stepney as our most capped GK barring a horrific injury. Will be a true United legend by the time he leaves.

Here’s hoping last season was just a blip and not his new baseline.

He'll be entering his prime for the next 6 years or so as well. Last season was a blip. This year we'll see him better than ever. Loved his distribution against Inter, and I normally criticize him for that.

No, because he didn't lead us to glory from our own 18-yard box. We're completely ignoring the fact that he spent years single-handedly keeping us from slipping completely into mid-table obscurity here. Only the last few months of the latest season counts, you know.

Say GKs enters prime at 27-32.. And We only be paying 18 million per year for him..
Sounds acceptable. Im happy and hoping all that dip in form was due to the prolonged contract issues.

Ps: Bless the fax machine.

I think part the problem is trying to apply a blanket rule to everyone.

Some goalkeepers do indeed enjoy their best years in the latter stages of their career. Others can down the path of being utterly brilliant in their mid-20s, then start dropping howlers, and never really recovering the confidence to perform at the highest levels of professional football consistently again.

Now I'm not saying De Gea is definitely in permanent decline, but there have been some concerns about him since the last World Cup. They carried on through most of the last domestic season. And now we've signed him to a long-term contract at (allegedly) a very high wage.

I still believe De Gea will come good again. He's absolutely a legend at the club giving the miracles he's performed for years and years between the goalposts. This is one gamble I'm happy to take, because I think the guy deserves it for all he's done for us, but it's certainly a risk for us - that is, unless De Gea would take a pay cut and leave if things turned sour.

Two years ago De Gea for me was the best keeper in the world. Last year was rather poor and reminded me slightly of the quick fall of Joe Hart. Both of them are reactionary keepers. It seems with this type of keeper they can often start their decline more quickly then keepers who rely more heavily on positioning and anticipating play. So I do not think quoting the longevity of certain keepers is a valid argument. Last season could of also just been an anomaly. Definitely a tricky situation for the club especially with the contract up in a year. If last season proves to be his level going forward his wages make him nontransferable with a huge wage for 6 years.

DDG absolutely struggles with coming for high balls in the box. He has no communication or vocal abilities in such situations, every game there is a situation where him and the defenders collide or almost do it because of misunderstanding inside of the box when facing opposition set pieces.

Not to mention his ball playing skills have seriously deteriorated since Van Gaal left. For a GK at a title challenging team and getting a ridiculous new 6 year contract, De Gea has way too many flaws and let's hope for our sake he works hard to change that or we will be left with another player that is on insane wages but struggles to earn them on the field.

I also don't understand how some fans are deeply in love with him, since him wanting for years to leave United and having contract issues for a very long time. Other players would have been destroyed for that type of behaviour.

Yeah, and rightly so. People have short memories here, he had a shaky season but he’s undoubtably the best player we’ve had for the last six years and I fully back him to get back to his best.

That’s a lot of money, for a keeper, a lot.
A bit sad for Henderson, I suppose he will be sold after a good season in the PL.
But let’s not kid ourselves, De Gea is probably a better keeper than Henderson will ever be, which isn’t a slight on him.

It’s not even close.

Thats hindsight talking, based off his last 3 months, you probably need reminding of the previous month's and coming off picking up the player of the year, previously.

Sticking Romero or Henderson in, is wishful, if we are not careful we will end up in the same situation as when Schmeichel retired..

It's based on a lot longer than the last 3 months. Maybe some others have only been talking about it for that long, but I have been on it for at least a couple of years. He's had some great games with unbelievable saves, but he has always struggled at the basics and I've been calling for his sale ever since Real Madrid came calling a couple of years ago...

Massive overpaid and he is not even the best keeper in England. Fanboys will defend him even if he asked for 500k. When Rashford signed for 200k, people are demanding him to get 20 goals. So what for De Gea ? fewer than 30 goals concealed?

I hope Henderson DON'T sign a new contract and go on and becoming a top top keeper , maybe England #1 . And we have to spend 200m to buy him in 2025

I hope you stop "supporting" the club.

Well that's dumb.

How on earth did you get promoted?

If anyone in the squad deserves the top wage it would be Dave!

A few bad months when everyone in the team was suffering is hardly a fair assessment of his skills as a GK.

If it is 6 years then what a servant he has been to the club...plus playing behind Mike and Phil all these years, he more than earned a payrise.
he's lucky not to be in therapy!

That’s it?
Why not have us relegated with Henderson scoring a bicycle kick in the last second whilst playing for Liverpool?

Feck sake, sort it out man.

Career contract basically. With the way wages are going this will be a paltry sum in a few years. Glad he's signed on.

Even during the extremely poor run of form he made some massive saves for us. People are now picking on some parts of his game as if he was ever a perfect goalkeeper. He wasn't but he was still our best player for years. How can anyone question if he is better than Romero and keep a straight face?

Is it £20m per year before or after tax. if it's £200k p/w gross then ok-ish with it. If it's net and a 6 year contract then we've shot ourselves in the foot for future contract talks in my opinion.

Much rather have sold him, put romero in for a season and see how Henderson goes on if it were net.

Know many don't agree with the thinking but I think we are actually in quite a good position keeper wise. Now we're stuck with a player on a 6 year contract on £20m a year and have to pay him £xm to leave if he declines and Henderson becomes better.

The state of this fecking thread. DDG is an incredible player and anyone seriously questioning his ability, or even suggesting Romero is a better keeper should just delete their account. Why are half of you even here? You clearly detest the club and everything associated with it. Time for the mods to start wielding the ban hammer, and get this forum back to a somewhat tolerable place to discuss the club.

Post of the Summer!

Not sure "stuck with" is the right term. He's been quite good over the course of his time here, in my opinion.

stuck with in the sense we've given him a massive 6 year contract that probably no other club will match. So if for sake of argument his performances drop and Henderson's get better to the point we'd rather have Henderson in goal than DDG in 2 years then we'd have to pay his contract off to get rid or be stuck with him, like we are with sanchez

He's been brilliant and not denied that, nor do I begrudge him for holding out for such a contract at all - just don't think the contract warrants it that's all given our depth and his position so it's more an issue with the club for me.

I agree the depth is incredible with De Gea. Without him, we have Romero (a great stand in) and Henderson (sky high potential but, completely unproven). So if we got rid of De Gea, I feel our depth would be pretty crap. Which is why I am elated he has signed.

State of this thread FFS.

This forum is great and it is good to discuss varying opinions on our club and players, but some of the things I've read here beggars belief.

DDG is only a 'decent' keeper? C'mon.

His dip in form is also a bit exaggerated on here. He only had a bad run of a few games which did cost us a lot. Reading some comments on here it sound like he was bad for the whole of last season. Reality is that he saved us valuable points for most of it.

It's ridiculous how many 'fans' change their minds like the wind. I've been part of forums etc long enough to know that if it were up to the online fan base, we would see at least 6/7 players in and out every summer. It's embarrassing how quick some are to turn on players, the club etc but I sums up societies current attention span and general tolerance I suppose.

What a load of old guff. The only player who has been turned on this weekend is Ashley Young - and that's been roundly, and rightly - condemned by most posters. This here is just debate.

Questioning the length of a contract is not the same as not recognising a player's former worth. Wondering whether a player coming off a (by his high standards) mediocre season is having a blip or starting his decline is a question we've asked plenty over the past few seasons. And again, that doesn't mean the same posters aren't grateful for his almost superhuman efforts since Fergie left.
