De Gea contract talk | Signs new deal

one of the best gks in the world just committed the rest of his career to us.
Some have forgotten just how good Dave is. He won our player of the year four times in the last six years for a reason and was widely regarded as the best goalkeeper in the world not long ago.

Never excelled in European competition or on the International stage for Spain, but he's the best goalkeeper in the last 5 years and arguably our greatest.:wenger:
You HAVE seen him play, right?

If football was the shite military metaphor that I'm going to use now, Schmeichel would have been a General, VDS was that Colonel type from Rambo, Stepney is the guy in the corner who's retired but always has a solution to stop the Russians and De Gea is Jason Bourne - the one man army.

So OGS has got DDG, Rashford, McTominay, martial, tuanzebe, Andreas to sign new contracts - signed AWB, Dan James, more or less moved Gomes, Rashford og Chong into the first team Squad, brought back optimism by playing youngsters, and playing attacking football.

Yeah it was a mistake to hire him

dont forget those

He was very poor last season and as such a wage increase is beyond stupid as it is rewarding poor performance. A contract extension would on the same wage he was on would have been sensible. He is not worth that kind of contract in terms of current ability. If the club had to offer him this kind of wage to get him to sign then it would have been better to sell him rather than rewarding failure. I hope for Oles sake that DDG has a season worth that wage otherwise he ends up looking like an idiot along with the board.

Fantastic! He's now our highest earner rather than Alexis.

Wage to revenue ratio is still amongst the best in the league so we have room to bring in more top players if we wish

The interviews I've seen and read suggest Henderson won't want to be a long term number 2.

Who knows though.

Hope Henderson signs a new contract with us and gets his loan. Then next year we'll be able to accurately compare him to DDG having both played in the same competition. Say DDG has a shite season and Henderson does great with the blades (again) he'll have a real chance of displacing DDG next year.

Give it a rest he was available on a free next season and he would have had a pick of clubs. Never asked for a transfer request. Even when the fax machine broke did he sulk? Delighted he’s signed.
I think it’s just that the money is going out of control at this club. £300k a week. But 6 years on what he’s being paid is a bit too much. He had a poor season as well and I personally think he’s not one of those commanding type goalkeepers that will age well. He’s a pure instinct keeper and those types of keepers fade with their reflexes. I reckon he 3 seasons at the top. Got a bad feeling on this one. He could end up being past it at some point and we’re stuck with an expensive keeper that we can’t drop.

6 years?! Even when we get it right we still manage to get it wrong.

Fair enough, depends how you see it, and if he finds his form again long term then we'll have done the right thing, but the warning signs were there for all to see last season, so it's either a massive coup, or will become yet another massive anchor on the wage bill, it could go either way, 6 years is a long time.

Controversial option, but it could be that alot of his drive to be the best has been to get the move he always wanted, now that is out of the equation, for ever, will the edge still be quite there.

£117m

But, take a breath, the flipside is DDG leaving for free next summer and us having to find a replacement.

Look at what Chelsea & Liverpool had to spend to recruite a top level keeper. Let's say we ended up paying £60m for someone who'd accept £250k a week.. 5 year contract...

Probably a 5+1 as all our recent contracts include a club +1 option.
Even 5 years is a long time though and - as we've (not) learned with Rooney, Schweinsteiger, Sanchez - players can decline pretty quickly. Then we're lumped with a really expensive millstone all over again. For all we know, his decline could've already started.

We're fecking idiots basically.

Leaves a bit of a bad taste, the guy has wanted out virtually since he became a top keeper, it's just circumstance, and lack of offers have stopped it happening.

Why wouldnt the best goalie in the world not want to go to a team that is better positioned to win titles?
We sure arent winning anything soon and our upper management doesn't have a clue, if I were him Id want to go too.

We got lucky that there was a lack of offers. My hope is with Ole's positivity and a few new signings we would start playing attractive football + winning again and hopefully our talented players wouldn't want to leave.

Goalies can play quite a bit longer than outfield players.
I dot think this one is that bad a deal.

We complained about Sanchez's wages and it looks like we are doing it again. Let's just hope that his form last year was a blip.

He is declining for some reason, what a bad idea.

People assume his last season was a blip, but to me it goes deeper. This pre season he is looking shaky as well.

I am not a fan and will say it straight up. If i was Dean, i would run away as quickly as possible.

He might knock de Gea from the no 1 spot, anything can happen. Henderson might turn out to be as good as his potential is yet, I hope so but anything can happen in football.

Yes idiots for giving one of the best keepers in the world a new contract. Get a grip.

Yeah, they do play for longer but it's risky making long term commitments to 29 year olds, irrespective of their position.

And move DDG where? If that happens we're likely stuck with another Alexis on the wage bill, not good. Think this means Henderson is out the door, which is a shame. I would have preferred a 1/2year loan for Hendo with DDG extended 2/3years, but hey ho.

If he can get back to his best then no doubt, its a good deal. Will he? I'm not so sure but I'm crossing all them fingers and toes.

Goalkeepers known for their catlike reflexes improve in their 30s, right? its like Rooney and Sanchez contracts were never given out...by the same guy

DDG had a dip in form towards the end of last season but to be fair most of our players did, after all the years of service he has given us surely one dip in form doesnt mean hes lost it.

I think this is good business by the club, he is the best goalie in the world on form and one of the few world class players we have.

No, we're idiots for giving a 29 year old coming off his worst season a 6 year contract. Nobody's doubting how good De Gea has been for us, by the way.

Just before his end of season blip , we played spurs at wembley....

You are choosing the negative slant with the ‘for all we know...’.

I can reply with, for all we know the last few months of last season was a blip, as his mind was distracted with the contract situation and now he will get back to his best and be a top keeper at the club for 5 years.

This is the same keeper than was voted into the PL team or the season 5 times and was the best player at United for 5+ years. I will chose to be positive.

It wasnt end of season. It was half a season and before Spurs, he wasnt special either. He was bang average for the most part of the season and horrific at the end.

His buddy GK coach is here as well. Maybe he needs a change of scenery, GK careers are not linear

In the unlikely scenario none of PSG/Juve/Real will be willing to take him off our hands there's always the bench. The best player plays and if that means benching DDG for Henderson I'm all for it.

Think it’s a poor deal personally. Not that I don’t respect what he’s done, he’s been brilliant, but I don’t think you make such a commitment to a player who may be showing signs of not being as good anymore. He was poor last season, and was terrible in the World Cup just before that too.

This probably means we’ll sell Henderson to Sheffield this window then, as there is no point at all in him staying now.

He's one of if not the best goal keepers in the world. He is 28 and we gave him a 5 +1 deal. Thank feck for that. we dont have to worry about his position till he's ready to retire. what was it supposed to be 2 year deal? Stop being stupid

Lets be real, for things he is done in past few years we owe him some money vs money he was paid, maybe he thought the same and there for that story about demanding % of sale if we decided to sell him this summer, dunno.
