Day 5: Hungary vs Portugal | France vs Germany

Just out of interest: I see that 5-1 quite often mentioned in English media and this forum, is that game something that is seen as an important result to be remembered in England?

My impression in Germany usually is that no one cares about that because everyone knows we were just aweful in those years and still got better results in the actual World Cup than England.

England weren’t that great either. Keegan was sacked in those qualifiers after losing to Germany at home. Before that result England along with Germany failed to get out of the Euros group, so it was seen as a huge result and the optimism grew from there which laughably failed as per usual

Considering the difference in quality, Hungary aren't cowards. Pushing higher up and trying to play football. Without a lot of luck they will concede eventually but kudos to them.

How do the experts rate the game 1-10? Not sure if I want to watch 3 halves of football today.

I don't see the problem with Jota taking the first chance. He was in a good position himself.

No one cares about it in Germany and it doesn't get mentioned as you got smashed to pieces by an average England team. Like with most embarrassing things they get swept under the carpet.

Emile Heskey scored..

Szalai I was refering to. One goal a season doesn’t surprise me at all.
But to be fair to him he was important to turn around Mainz' season. He wasn't part of the squad during the first half of the season, while he was playing all the time when the closed a gap never done before to prevent Mainz from being relegated.

It's more that when you win tournaments friendlies kind of become meaningless.

Was England's Cup final, whereas Germany's Cup final, was the World Cup Final

Christ what happened to Bernardo? What an awful half. Ronaldo just horrible. Will probably score now

I mean Germany also lost 5:1 to Romania during this time period and nobody remembers that either. If you are awful often enough it just becomes the standard.

Yeah, Bernardo was amazing in 2018/19 but he looks a shadow from that today.

Mate, that was a qualifier for the World Cup 2002. But I guess you just proved my point of it being forgotten/us not caring much about stuff that isn't the actual tournament

Embarassing stuff like the desaster of the EURO 2000 is a topic around every tournament. The World Cup loss againt England in 1966 is also "the game" that is remembered when we are talking about England vs Germany, but not this one in 2001, that's what made me wonder.

Lmfao 1 deflected Cross in 45 mins and you gassing that ? Where was he the other 44 mins 59 seconds ?

It's even more embarrassing if I have to talk you through his performance minute by minute. You suggested he was anonymous when he fact he created most of the chances for Portugal as backed up by stats.

Keep digging. Infact get in the hole and cover up the top.

I'm not sure how he could be anonymous when he literally created the best chance of the half.

The only one digging is you. But if you happy with low standards that's fine.

I haven’t seen Carvalho play for years, is he okay? I don’t think I’ve seen him do anything other than walk. And now passing the ball straight out.
