Day 18: Croatia vs Brazil | Netherlands vs Argentina (QF 1&2)

Saying this again, but I don't understand why Croatia is getting so much shit for playing the way they did. Everyone saw what happened to us (Korea) when we tried to play open, expansive football against Brazil and got utterly slaughterd before the first half was over.

Modric is 37 and he was everywhere. And he is still surprisingly quick. What a player.

Thought Brazil deserve what's coming. They gotten a bit too sloppy towards the end especially Antony.

Now on to next horny match. I'm torn between wanting to see LVG or Messi to go through the next round. Messi has been one of the best player this tournament.

Nah, they just fecked up there. Tite's subs were clearly defensive and meant to shut things down. They got a bit too aggressive right then seeing an opportunity to win the ball high up and got punished

Why didn't he bring Fabinho on!? was he on the bench

I do not know what Argentina will do today, but the world cup is becoming more and more a European affair.

Last 4 winners: Italy, Spain, Germany and France.
2006, 2010 and 2018: all-European finals.
2022: There will be at least two European teams, and possibly four in the Semis if the Dutch and Portugal win. Another all- European final is very much possible.

I know that there are more teams in the WC from Europe than from South America and other continents. But, as we saw this tournament and in previous ones, the European teams end up beating their rivals. In addition, Brazil made their straight finals (1994, 1998, 2002), and since then no final. In a way, it was the only team who was capable of competing with the Europeans. Argentina in 2014 too, but that's basically it.

what

Yeah, Brazil never enter a WC without being touted as favourite but I didn't see any convincing team since Ronaldinho's days in 2002 and this one is no exception.

Don't remember much of the first game but I can guarantee you that Algeria gave Germany their hardest match of the tournament. I live there and their opinion was unanimous about that game.

Their 2006 team was great as well, a bit unbalanced but tbh they did look great until that game against France where Zidane and Viera erased Brazilian midfield...but they were favorites before the game.

Since 2010, i don't think Brazil has had an espectacular team

It'll be France or England. SA will have wait and improve.

I thought Croatia... played? They've been riding their luck alright, sure, their goal today was as jammy as is gets, but some of you are making it as if they're 2004 Greece mark two. I don't think accusations of them being anti-football are fair.

As a matter of fact I'm going to say it now: if Croatia go on and win the whole thing it will be well-deserved.

modric is still an incredible player. Had not lost that burst of pace in the first three strides that gets him away from a player.
Bossed it today.

Calling it now, Portugal vs Croatia final
Imagine Morocco and Croatia final
Hmm the penalties, the tension . I'll never get enough of this Mario party's mini game, the coin toss that decides outcomes in biggest football event.

If they beat Brazil, probably Argie and then France then it's ridiculously deserved.

I think we will see a Messi masterclass tonight.

Fair play to Croatia.

Not an exciting team but pragmatic, they do what they need to do to be successful. They've got an ancient Modric running the show, and dubious quality elsewhere. They can't go toe to toe in an attacking style but they're a very intelligent side.
You are right. They can control games but are not that powerful in attack so they are pragmatic. No one could blame them. 4 millions people and 2 semis in 4 years. Awesome.
I don’t care how they play I support them !

Let's be honest, this loss wasn't about one player. Brazil has enough quality to beat Croatia. They just were too slow from the get go.

Not sure I agree... All they had to do was see the game out, not go full on attack.

Some more defence minded players might have helped.

If you don't mind me asking what exactly did Modric boss? Brazil had loads of shots on target which the keeper saved. Croatia did absolutely nothing going forwards. Is it just running and some pretty short passes around the half way line? Am I missing something? It was a great physical effort but bossed it? Feels like hyperbole. Bad end product and a defensive laps took the game to pens.

This is their 5th 120minutes wins since 2018. They are known for seeing out games for penalty shootout.
Nothing is exciting about it. Without Mandzukic this is way worse than the last time
Maybe but they can play football. They are a very technical team. They are there to win not to entertain.

Brazilians on twitter blaming Oliver for the elimination. Guess those Copacabana vacations are off

I'm southamerican but WC has always been Europe +Brazil and Argentina....it was even worse in the 80s and 90s...teams like Chile,Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, and Paraguay never go far in the World Cup.
Things are just coming back to what they used to be, the exception was Uruguay in 2010.

Romania eliminated Argentina in 1994, and Bulgaria did the same with Germany, Croatia reached top 3 in France 98.

We never saw this in tier 2 southamerican teams in afraid, mentality is too weak and quality wise we are falling behind....well Balkanic players have always been better than peruvian, colombians, chileans, ecuadorians, etc anyway.

Let's be honest, this loss wasn't about one player. Brazil has enough quality to beat Croatia. They just were too slow from the get go.

They got beaten by a deflected goal in the 117th minute, it's not as though Croatia were dominating or creating chances or the goal was the result of sustained pressure or a plan or even intention from the scorer. It was an accident. A team can do fine, and still lose in a knockout tournament.

How do you not enjoy that first quarterfinal game?!

These teams are here because they have the requiste talent and coaching/tactics for any situation.

What a tremendous match all throughout. Both teams were deserving of the win, but this time Croatia comes out of it. Fair play.

I admire their spirit and how prepared they are for tense, pressure moments. Yeah, I'm sure people want attacking football but I also can find enjoyment in how Croatia seem to never lay down.

Yep, I admire those things about them too.

Brazil started every game with an eleven that wasn’t the best they could put out, get rid of that coach

Just so you remember.

3,8 million people.

Two time world cup semifinals in a row.

Indeed. A small nation by numbers, but their accomplishments are brilliant. Think they’ve made 3 World Cup semi finals since 98. They probably should have made the final that year too
