Dawson to QPR

Dawson is among the youngest players to have been called in for the national squad.

He is an outstanding player reading the game, but I believe his body is not as athletic nor fast enough to play at the same level. Very interesting player who didn't really fulfill his potential.

Worth about 1,5m euro. On pair with players like Upson.

9m bid accepted for him. QPR are a joke.

Their wage bill must be absolutely massive. All to hopefully just about avoid relegation.

He isn't that bad but if I were a QPR fan I'd be very worried about the fee of £9m when other teams spend that much on two or three superior players from abroad. Not the first time either, they must be spending absolute fortune on Wright-Phillips, Johnson, Zamora and such. Even Park is probably on high wages and I don't think he'll offer them all that much. Crap team, crap manager.

Says £7.5 mill on BBC site, is they add ons?

7.5 mill is reasonable but still a tad expensive.

I think it's a good move. May be a tad expensive - 5-6m sounds fair - but QPR are splashing the cash without giving a shit, and their defence is horrible. A good option for them, wonder if they could have got Bassong as well who is a decent player. Dawson needs games and I reckon he'll be a good buy for QPR.

Considering who QPR have in defence, he's potentially a good buy if he can get over the injuries and find back his best form.

Crazy business model: long contracts for washed up players, who will eventually become hard to flog off once the bubble bursts.

This is the worst season to get relegated because of the new Sky deal. Yet I can see QPR going down, and if they fail to come back up at the first time of asking, it'll be another Portsmouth.

I'm surprised at the criticism he's getting myself. Has he come back a different player from injury or something? If not, he's easily one of the best defenders in the bottom half and with him and Nelsen they have a lot of experience in that backline, and Onouha's a decent back-up.

It's the fee. £9m is a lot for a club like QPR and he'll be on big wages. People are simply starting to see a new Portsmouth trend there. If you look at their squad they have a dozen of possible high earners and little quality to show for it as Swansea game proved.

Because Spurs suffer a defensive crisis every season? Not to mention that defence is weak to begin with.

That was with King and Woodgate. It should be much better now.

It has two new players compared to last season and both are supposedly quite good. With a 25-man squad having 4 CBs is enough.

I seem to remember a team that started with a CM playing in central defence this season and getting battered ... but can't quite recall which team that was.

Probably our first XI back four is Walker, Kaboul, Vertonghen and Ekotto.

The 2nd XI back four might be Naughton, Caulker, Gallas and Bale.

I wouldn't call that "weak" by any means.

Doesn't that kind of back up his point, given we have more defenders (and better ones, obviously)?

You'll need to explain further, because I don't see how you starting off game 1 by having to shoe-horn a CM into central defence backs up his perpetual defensive "injury crisis" point re. Spurs

As for "better defenders", whether that's true anymore this season remains to be seen bar Vidic.

The players that usually suffer from the injuries are now gone, bar Gallas. Dawson and King were the main culprits for the last few years.

It backs up his point that having four CBs isn't enough at this level.

Bar Vidic? Yeah, just scrap our best defender and compare them. If you take away Vidic, you should take away Vertonghen too.

Four CBs is enough, provided none of them are injury-prone ... and especially if you have a specialist RB or LB (Walker at RB in our case) who can - and has - also played as a CB.

We got battered against Everton in the same way that Spurs got battered against Newcastle, that too when they were playing their first choice central defense. Tough times ahead of Spurs.

No. There's very little comparison between the two games.

Spurs lost against Newcastle, but played pretty well and were unlucky not to come away with at least a point.

You lost against Everton, played badly and deserved to lose. If not for De Gea the margin might have been 2 or 3 goals.

So if you're basing your season's prognosis on the first league game, which would be foolish, you should more accurately predict tough times ahead for your lot rather than Spurs.

I've lost track of who's trolling who now...

I didn't watch much of Spurs in 2009-2010, as I spent more time watching a different division. This is supposedly the season where Dawson was good? Right?

My abiding memories of him before that are of a glacial-paced donkey who used to routinely gift us points through his own comic brand of uselessness. I can barely remember him playing over the last couple of seasons to judge whether he has actually stopped being shit.

Your manager is a failure in Premier League, your goalkeeper is 41 yr old and your best player has left you, your best striker is someone who comes across with a reputation of inconsistent and has only once scored more than 20 goals in his last seven seasons. We'll see how fares worse in this season, us or you.

In all seriousness though, I can see 3-4 new players at Spurs now. Dawson is gone, Huddlestone is gone, Modric is gonish. They need to strengthen their squad IMO.

dawson was excellent the season Spurs qualified for the Champions League but who knows how well he will play after his injuries

what is Mark Hughes like - his signings at City and now QPR have been pretty questionable - signing loads of players and hoping for the best
