David Raya

I’d never noticed it but I was having a back and forth with one of my mates who supports Arsenal, and as soon as it went to pens he said Raya was awful at pens and wouldn’t save any. Not sure it was pessimism or whether he’s just always that shit
To be fair I told my Arsenal mate to shoot on sight because Altay is dross. He was brilliant yesterday.

He moves a fraction too early. Anyone delaying their shot will be able to adjust and put it past him. Not saying we necessarily exploited this last night, but it does look like a weakness.

I’ve watched those penalties back and yes he does go a touch early but I’m unsure he goes early enough for the taker to change his direction in most cases. I assume Zirkzee did pick up on this because his wasn’t a great penalty if that’s where he’s decided to put it irrespective of Reya going early. Yoro on the other hand was a superb spot kick but you wonder why he went so close to the post if Reya going early helped him ?

Was a wonderful feeling being behind the goal for those pens. You just knew that he wasn't going to save any. Almost felt like all of us behind the goal knew that we had won before the result was official.

Yeah, I don't know if most of our players picked up on it, but I think they had some instruction from the coaching staff on which side to potentially target. They likely did some level of research.

Probably the quickest keeper in World Football for getting up after a rebound. Can remember right at the start of the season in Villa-Arsenal he got up ridiculously quick to pat away the rebound after Onana had hit the crossback and Watkins was about to tap into empty net.

Brilliant shot stopper. I look at Onana and I cry.

It's extra galling when they were both available at the same time, and Raya was cheaper.

Having said that, I don't think Raya is even that good... Capable of very weird moments. Having said that his shot stopping in the second half was amazing

Yeah that Villa double save was incredible. Did one in the CL too this season.

I think his low centre of gravity helps him.

Was his shot stopping really that good, or were our players just shooting right at him?

I don’t think he knew much about a couple of the chances, they just hit him. Half a ball’s width the other way and he concedes three goals.

I think he makes things look better than they are sometimes. Also think he was poor for the free kick.

Bit of both. Your primary job as a keeper is to position yourself to have the best chance of saving shots. Thats positioning and moving at the right time. Theres a reason why the likes of Alisson are so good at 1 on 1s and its positioning and picking the perfect moment to rush out and narrow the angle. So yes, a striker can almost always beat any keeper from certain positions but the keeper plays a big part in narrowing the angles and spreading themselves to block off the obvious gaps.

I don't think there was much wrong at the free kick. The wall was where it should have been and he was covering the other side. Good free kick, perhaps the keeper could be slightly better positioned but it wasn't as howler. As for making things look better than they are, Onana is excellent at that. Always parrying and making basic shots look far more dangerous than they are.

Raya is a far better keeper than Onana.

Didn't say it was a howler. Just think it was poor for the standards of a keeper at that level.

Don't think he's far better either. Better, sure, but Raya also drops plenty of clangers. He's a good keeper but not a top one.

I think there was one save that was genuinely good (the one from Mazraoui I believe?) and the others looked better due to his reacting to them. He's not a great keeper by any stretch of the imagination, good but not great.

Some crucial saves but does also have the odd weird moment/clanger in him. Positioning for the FK seemed off as well - but hats off to Bruno, it was a well executed kick. Positioning reminded me of Raya’s during our penalty shootout victory over them for some reason

Would definitely have him over Onana though.

Weird timing to praise him when he was poor for our goal.

Decent keeper though.

He also kept two almost certain goals out of the net, so he was net positive for Arsenal. He's a very good keeper.
