I guess it's time for a thread in here now Fergie has confirmed the signing :)

EDIT:

Here's the transcript of the interview, thanks to Damien1990 in the newbies for sending it to me :)

Geoff Shreeves: It's some news today that the club have announced a new goalkeeper. Can you tell us about that?

Fergie: Well, we've been working on it for quite a while and we've identified him quite a while back as one we should go for. He's a young goalkeeper. Very quick, good composure, presence. He's an outstanding replacement to Edwin van der Sar.

Geoff Shreeves: Does that make it even more difficult the fact that Edwin was so good?

Fergie: Of course it does. But we're looking at the same types of qualities because the one great quality that Edwin always had was his composure and organisational ability and David de Gea is very similar that way.

It's clear that Fergies strategy is to leave United with a young team. He's said it before.

what did sir alex say?

Should be a fantastic signing for us. Young keeper but very talented and he has experience playing & winning the Europa League. Good price for someone who could be here for 10+ years.

"We identified him a while back and he was the player we were told we should definitely sign.....What Edwin has in abundance is composure and organisation and that's what David has"

Something like that. Great signing, I'm really excited.

Very excited about this one

He might make a few mistakes but he will also make some outstanding saves

cheers. Sounds promising.

Quite nervous about signing such a young keeper but we its been coming for ages so we must have done a very thorough scouting job. If this works, we've basically sorted the position for a minimum of ten years. Quite exciting.

Now we just have to keep our feet on the ground, and remember our starting keeper is only 20...

He will make mistakes, hell Edwin made mistakes, but we have to let him work his way through it. Wish he could have spent 6 months with Edwin picking up a few pointers.

Very happy with this. I think we're settled for a decade and a half, if it all goes well.

I think we'll have to be patient though. It's always gonna be a step down from VdS, but based on what little I've seen of him, I think he's got the potential to become one of the very best. For reference, he's exactly as old as Arsenal's Szczęsny (born in the same year), and he's certainly been given quite a bit of "slack" for being so young.

I doubt the media in particular will be as lenient if (when) de Gea screws up, but the important thing is that the club and fans are.

Welcome!

Wish he could have spent 6 months with Edwin picking up a few pointers.

Like I've said several times already, VdS more or less confirmed in an interview a while back that he will be staying on in some capacity. He'll be around to share his wisdom!

'David De Gea made 150 saves in the Spanish top-flight in 2010-11, only Almería's Diego Alves made more (157).'

If that's the correct transcript, which doesn't mention any names... how can we be so sure?

Sorry, but I'll have a bit of doubt until it's on the site, or official announcement is made.

However, very good signing in my opinion. He is very young, very very talented. Would stay with us for a long time and be very successful.

Very excited.

I'm very happy about this, he was my second choice behind Neuer and he was never going to leave Germany.

The big question is how can he adapt to the English league and how he'll cope with long periods of idleness? Atlético's defending is legendary in its ineptness, he's always kept busy.

Haha, yeah. I completely missed that! Deleted my post right after I posted it - brain fart moment.

Just seems a bit surreal. Wasn't expecting anything done so soon!

Apologies mate...

I haven't been following the De Gea thread, or the Edwin retiring thread that closely.

Brilliant news, if he does hang around in some capacity for a little while.

It's a miracle he has any clean sheets at all with that horrendous defense ahead of him.

I think this is a risky buy, he was good in his first season but looked wobbly at times this season. Anyway, welcome aboard David and best of luck. :)

Follow him!

D_DeGea

Wonder how long before Rio follows him

Having seen Almería's defence against Real that's not a surprising statistic,

Hah, no worries. Sorry if I came across as harsh there, but I think I've mentioned it at least on four different occasions but still people don't seem to catch up on it!

Will this be enough to appease the muppets for 24 hours?

I give him a muppet rating of 8/10. He's foreign, been talked about in the media for quite a while, pretty damn good on the last 2 or 3 versions of FM, and comes from Atletico who generally have pretty good youth / young players.

The only thing going against him is he is a goalkeeper and we actually need someone in his position so could be considered a necessity rather than a luxury AM or winger for £25 million plus. That would give him a 9/10 on the muppet scale. For a ten it would basically have to be Ronaldo or Messi
