Manchester United and Wigan are keen to bring David De Gea to the Barclays Premier League according to the Atletico Madrid goalkeeper 's agent.

De Gea has progressed through the ranks at the Vicente Calderon and made a rare first-team appearance last week following Sergio Asenjo's drop in form.

The 19-year-old has been compared to Edwin van der Sar and Hector Rincon believes United manager Sir Alex Ferguson sees his client as the ideal replacement for the veteran goalkeeper.

"A few Premier League clubs have been asking about De Gea," Rincon told Soccernet. "Especially Wigan, who made an an offer which Atletico turned down.

"Roberto Martinez thinks De Gea is ready for the Premier League but Atletico have insisted they want De Gea to stay at Calderon.

"Manchester are interested too. I didn't talk with Ferguson but an intermediary of Manchester confirmed there's real interest in De Gea."

De Gea has not yet signed professional forms at Atletico, with his current deal set to expire in 2011.

However, Rincon has warned any interested parties they have to move swiftly if they want to secure the Spanish Under-21 keeper.

He added: "Any club can buy him right now just by paying 12 million euros (£10.4million) because De Gea does not have a professional contract, but we are talking with Atletico to close the agreement."

Any good? Haven't see Atletico at all so can't comment.

Seems like the only signings we are being linked to are "one for the future" types. Could fit in well in that respect.

If he was all that good you'd have to question the wisdom of signing Sergio Asenjo in the summer, the best young goalkeeper in spain. And £10.4 million when he doesnt even have a professional contract?

I've heard that he's miles better than United Goalkeeping 'Target' #375, but unfortunately more error-prone than United Goalkeeping 'Target' #92.

I love how agents talk.

"The 19-year-old has been compared to Edwin van der Sar and Hector Rincon believes United manager Sir Alex Ferguson sees his client as the ideal replacement for the veteran goalkeeper."

So according to Mr Agent Man, the young lad who can't get a game at a struggling, under performing Athletico is going to be an 'ideal replacement' for a keeper who has over 100 internationals under his belt and has won almost everything there is to win in football.

Perfect. Why didn't you say so. Where do we sign? You get 10% commission, or is it 20%, awww feck it just take it all you beaut - you feckin deserve it!

^^ They do have Sergio Asenjo you know..

So a 19 year old who has only played a couple of league matches is the replacement for a century capped international keeper?

He's had a good first half against Barcelona, with 3 or 4 fine shot stops. I've seen him in recent weeks against Racing and he was good in those matches too but they werent as eventful. But if he continues to do the business tonight against Barcelona, what more can you ask for? He's currently keeping Asenjo out of the team and Asenjo was considered the new Cassilas last season.

Hard to believe he only turned 19 a few months ago. He looked like he's been playing at the top level for quite some time which is extraordinary for such a young keeper.

First time I saw him play yesterday and he looked assured, much more so than any young keeper I have ever seen. Maybe Chief has a point about getting rid of Foster and PIG in the summer and bringing this lad in and let him be mentored by VDS for one season.

Is there a reason why he's been playing over Asenjo?

Asenjo hasnt really done the business for Atletico this season. He's had a few performances with some stunning stops, but then in other matches he's looked a bit helpless. Some may say you cant blame him for that with the lack of concentration the Atletico backline usually show week after week. But then you look at the Barcelona performance with 19 year old De Gea in the sticks and 20 or 21 year old Alvaro Dominguez in central defence and was there a lack of concentration? No.

Asenjo didnt do the business, De Gea got his chance in the recent cup games and he's looked more assured so he's kept the shirt. I wonder if they'll be letting go of Asenjo before they let go of De Gea.

I doubt they will let the latter leave though.. Considering he just signed a new contract.. Sky Sports | Football | Primera Division | Atletico Madrid | De Gea signs new deal

You'd have to question the wisdom of a lot of decisions from the manager upwards at Atletico though, really.

He does have similarities with VDS, and I'd rather a keeper like him than a keeper like Asenjo.

Have seen him play a few months ago. Was the real shit!Saved 1 penalty. Came out for all crosses and handled them well. Showed lots of confidence and arrogance (a trait I like in goalies). Good shot-stopping.

The most impressive thing is his claiming for crosses, confidence, composure for such a young goalie. I mentioned him in a thread a few months ago but got no response. More impressive than a young Cassilas because he seems to be more confident in claiming for aerial challenges and commanding the box. Seems to be a hybrid mix of Schmikes (coming out to catch crosses) & Van Der Sar (confidence, composure). I would wank 20 million pounds for him to be honest. Better than Kuzczak and Foster by miles.

So if PIG has a few run in games and conceded 1 goal... does that make him worldclass ?

I mean, let the kid have a season of 1st team football first and then rate him. Looks potentially good, but unless he's another genius like Casillas then I don't think he will bloom yet. Needs more games, certainly. If he stays No.1 until the end of the season with a decent run of good games then we'll talk about him again.

It's more about the keepers' ability than their performances, everyone knows that keepers are going to make mistakes right up until their mid-20's and probably even later. They take time to mature.

But TK has a pretty clear weakness that he can't really do much about, chances are he'll always have a bit of a problem aerially. Foster for us hasn't exactly looked dominant aerially.

De Gea doesn't really have a noticeable flaw like that.

As usual the Atletico defence has been utter shit this season. The performance against Barcelona came out of nowhere. Then again its the same every year when Barcelona go to the Calderon and lose. Perea, who's been absolutely shocking this season marked Ibrahimovic out of the game. De Gea really didnt have much to do which was a big surprise for a keeper against a team like Barcelona but when something did come his way he looked the business.

We had a bid turned down according to the beebs trasfers gossip.

David De Gea wants to move to Manchester United.

David De Gea holding out for dream move to Manchester United after turning down Wigan | Mail Online

Manchester United target David De Gea has revealed he turned down a move to Wigan last year - in order to keep his dream of replacing Edwin Van der Sar alive.

The Atletico Madrid goalkeeper is on Sir Alex Ferguson’s radar as the United manager plans for life without Van der Sar, 39.

Ferguson has sent scouts to run the rule over De Gea, 19, in recent weeks and the reports have been favourable - and with Ben Foster struggling to live up to his potential, United are on the look out for potential replacements.

Although Spaniard De Gea is not interested in leaving Atletico just yet, he has told Ferguson he would be willing to move to Old Trafford in the future.

'All I know is what Atletico have told me - there has been contact between the two clubs,' he said. 'I believe now is not the time to move. I was about to go to Wigan last summer but I wanted to remain at Atletico and take my opportunity another time.

'The Premier League would be enjoyable for any player and it is an option I would like a bit later on in my life.

'I won’t rule anything out but at the moment, my head is focused on Atletico. For me, Van der Sar has been one of the best in the world in recent years.'

Any game I've seen him play he's played well. I'm yet to see him make any silly mistakes. He really does come over like a young VDS and those comments are quite encouraging as usually we dont come too close to signing young spanish players. He's currently considered the best young goalkeeper in Spain, but so was Asenjo last season and now he's a backup. So he needs to continue working hard and improving.

i read somewhere last week that an 18m bid had been turned down ..
very unlikely ..
cant see him costing 18m

Question is would SAF be willing to stick a 20 yr old into the side as the number one keeper? I suppose if he's good enough he'll start regardless of age. But me thinks SAF will prefer another veteran instead of another Carroll/Howard headache, granted Howard probably would have been better off plying his trade at B'burn or Everton before going to United. Same can be said of this young lad.

I was impressed with him last night, especially when it came to coming for crosses.

De Gea is nicknamed Van Der Gea as he looks similar in build to VDS but also they say his coolness in games he does not get flustered.

He has played in a final and in some big cup games which shows he may have the temperament to handle the pressure at United.

If we can get VDS to sign one for another 2 years then I would think SAf should consider moving for De Gea as he has already turned down a move to Wigan in hope of someone like United to come calling...
Why another 2 years? One years is all we need for kid like that to come in, get used to thing in England and replace VDS is he proves in our shirt as good as he has been for Atletico.
