David de Gea has left Manchester United

For me a day of celebration and nostalgia marred by the horrible way ownership and management let this play out, including ETH.

Huge thank you to David for his long service to the club. Was simply the best shot stopper in the world for a number of years. He has rescued the team numerous times with some outrageous saves, my favourite as vs Arsenal in 2017. Glad he at least one the league with us in his time here.

I am disappointed with how the club has gone about the process of letting David go though. This should have all been wrapped up the day we finished our season and not still negotiating with David in July.

I do think it’s the right call to let him go. ETH clearly wants a different profile of keeper and it’s important that we back him. By the looks it’s Onana and I think that would be a fine successor to David.

Will be strange seeing a different goalkeeper next season, but it’s probably the right decision.

Thanks Dave!

Kind of amazing how his stock has fallen on here.

There was a thread several seasons ago heralding DDG as the best 'keeper United have ever had. There was discussion that he could go on to be the GOAT.

I don't know if he's regressed, or if we just expected too much of him.

I will remember him fondly for a number of moments, his performance against Real Madrid in Fergie's last season springs to mind, as does the time he repeatedly defied Liverpool in 2014.

Is there some kind of precise cut-off in terms of honours a player needs to achieve before deserving this big send off?
Yes. 10 years in the first team is generally considered the cutoff for a testimonial.

Lingard played in the first team 8 seasons, 2 of which he spent the majority on loan. He was never getting a testimonial, regardless of time spent coming up through the youth system.

Ahh how sad and how badly this has been messed up. An absolute legend of the club and by an absolute country mile our player of the decade. He was incredible for around 5/6 seasons and as consistent as could be imagined. What a player.

Yes it is the right time for him to go but we couldn’t have done it any worse of a way.

Legend. But it was time to move on. Sad that the club made a right hash of his departure though.

Without him we would’ve had a lot of lower placed finishes. I’ll always remember his crazy game against Arsenal and those exceptional saves against Everton at OT.

Thanks for the memories DDG.

I can now go back to loving the goalkeeper he used to be.

This is the best for all involved. Good luck to him.

I've got nothing but appreciation for all he has done for the club, and wish him the best going forward.

Was a great player for us for a long time and at £17 million we definitely got our moneys worth but no longer good enough and doesn’t fit how ETH wants us to play, wish him all the best unless whoever he plays for next is against United.

Absolute legend. I hate this revisionist history about him.

The time was right for him to leave, but this guy was superhuman for years. Stunning in his prime and one of the few quality players we've had in the post Ferguson era.

Wish him nothing but the best.
So many great moments, super human saves and countless times he’s dug us out of the shite, yet the vocal minority focus on a handful of mistakes he has made and suddenly he’s a terrible keeper. He’s better off out of here!

Will be incredibly alien not seeing him in our goal.
Our best player of the last decade.
Wish him only the best.

All the best to him going forward, but I'm glad we have finally moved on from him.

Probably one of the most over-rated players of the past decade. I feel like he never improved much from that kid who was battling Lindegaard in his first couple of years here. He hit a comfort zone on some big contracts and never developed his game to compliment his obvious outstanding reflexes and handling ability. And, probably the worst thing for a keeper, never grew out of being timid and unimposing. Hopefully a new club can bring a bit of that out of him as I don't think being pandered to here ever did him any favours.

Spot on

It’ll feel weird not starting the lineups with “DDG” :(

To think I was at university when we signed him and now am at a completely different stage in my life. He literally has been such a mainstay at the club and a reminder of some great times, even if they weren’t packed full of trophies.

Our club is so weird. They'll have their bellies tickled for years, upping wages to ridiculous levels and then just throw you out with no remorse. We handle everything completely wrong. It was dumb to offer him an extension months ago without knowing whether we wanted to keep him. But to have him agree to it, and then pull the offer makes no sense. We seemingly dont do anything the correct way.

Never will be a club legend for me. Length of tenure isn't the sole equation for me if it is then people better start putting Jesse Lingard on their lists of club legends given he joined our youth club in 2000 and only has 2 less cup wins than DDG had and wasn't single handily the reason why we lost cups like DDG.
De Gea played more than 500 matches for us. Lingard played around 150.

To even try to compare them is beyond stupid.

did the impossible- he could make jose and lvg games watchable.

For someone that talks about the soul of the club and how Qatar would ruin us, you seem to be on some proper plastic crusade in this thread.

If you don't see how a guy with the most clean sheets in the club's history, who has been acknowledged as our best player in some of those awful years after Ferguson, deserves a proper send-off in front of the home fans, then I am not sure what more I can say/write.

And the people lauding this as some new era where the club is now supposedly becoming ruthless, yet scrubs like Maguire are given the captaincy and tolerated for years just demonstrates how this fanbase but especially the club itself has a lot of hypocrites.

It will certainly be different with a new keeper in between the posts. In his time here he has made some of the most amazing saves I have ever seen with his hands and feet I remember one game against Spurs where he was a different class.

The best of luck to him at his next club and the rest of his career.

Wish him the best, incredible keeper, seemed to be a great teammate and will always remember him as 3 amigos of United (not sure what name Park, Evra, Tevez had). Just wish the exit had been better handled.

Brilliant servant to the club over the years but football has moved on and this is the right time. Ten Hag gave him a season, and I thought he improved but the last few games probably secured his fate.

Dave saves! Thank you for the decade of service! Hope this doesn't herald a new era of revolving-door keeping a la the post-Schmeichel era.

He should've left seeing what a joke this club and a large percentage of the fanbase is. At least Madrid fans are entitled for a reason.

He wouldnt have lasted so long at Madrid if he played like he has with us last few years.

It was time to go, he was a terrific servant, he should not have left in these dreadful terms. Club has embarrassed itself yet again.

It just became glaringly obvious that we needed to move on when you see him pumping 60 yard hit and hope balls upfield for the majority of games, the amount of balls given away cheaply was becoming a joke in this day and age

Teams are spending hundreds of millions on keepers, defenders and midfielders who can keep and pass the ball and our keeper is just hoofing it up field it’s so jarring in todays game
