Why would you take Pepe Reina and not Diego Lopez? Surely any sane, non sentimental person would have him first choice with De Gea second? Or possibly vice-versa, but definitely those two as main goalkeepers.
Because Del Bosque cares more about team morale than talent.

Spain have been trying to continue the winning formula of the last few years, though I think it went to extremes. Had it not been for Victor's injury, De Gea wouldn't even be in Brazil. And he's their best goalkeeper. Probably should have made other changes as well, freshen the team up, but how many teams do that until they found out the hard way their time is up?
I dont imagine they will use him or make any other major changes. For me after Euro 08 Spain have been very machine like and i imagine Del Bosque will stay loyal to the players who have given him so much and got them there.

1 bad game isnt enough to change a winning formula mid-competition. That will come if and when they are knocked out of the competition.

It's actually ridiculous that he is behind Reina in the pecking order.

reina is better then lopez still, unbelievably. lopez is slightly better as a shotstopper, but reina is safer, stronger in the air, and more rounded (fantastic passing ability).

lopez is just a tall, slightly inferior shotstopping-wise casillas. He's awful in the air, coming for crosses, has questionable positioning, questionable handling, and sometimes concedes goals you really expect him to save, his skill in reaching the corners for difficult shots is pretty inconsistent.

Really? Admittedly I'm not an expert but from what I've seen Lopez is better in the air than Reina. Positionally you could give Reina the nod, and also in terms of distribution, but I have Lopez as stronger aerially than Reina! Not great or maybe even good, but Reina's quite the flapper.

Regardless, I have De Gea as the best of them, and that seems to be the general perception among most people I talk to (except the scouse).

Gutted for him. Although i doubt del bosque was going to play him even after Casillas' horror show.

He's not been ruled out of the tournament, just the group-stage but depends of course If Spain can recover to get into the knockout stages

yeah, lopez isn't any good at coming for crosses, he just doesn't know how to. he messes up a hell of a lot, but he has a big advantage compared to casillas because lucky for him he's 6 foot 5. Despite his height though, he's actually pretty weak, Reina is comfortably more solid coming through a crowd of defenders, and lopez's judgement ability to claiming crosses is very poor.

Reina came off quite a good season in Napoli. I'd say i'd be far more comfortable with reina then lopez honestly.

De Gea is better then either then them. This news of the injury is such bad luck though, hopefully he can bounce back quickly.

De Dea better be injured. Ridiculous giving this meaningless game to Reina when De Dea, an obvious successor to Casillas could be getting a game.

Crack !

GOAT player/ agent/ director of football/ chief of United muppet assn.

Today marks the day we unveiled David de Gea for £17.8million. From day one I backed him, despite the shaky start, as he had the potential to go and become Manchester United great, as did Van der Saar/Peter Schmeichel. Not only has he become one of the best goalkeepers in the premier league, but he is soon to be Spain's no.1 for the foreseeable future. This puts him in a good position, to put in a good word about us to those Spanish talents. Well done Agent Dave.

He also has kept that beard very well from day 1, funny how he does poor when it's shaved off...

First post, after gaining promotion

And what a transfer this has turned out to be. Never had any doubts on him, but I also didn't expect him to become so ridiculously good in such a short period of time. One of Fergie's best signings IMO.

One of our most important pieces of business this summer, which I hope we can sort out, is to get this man's signature on a new long-term deal.

it's not even close how far ahead he is for me as my favorite player.

One of the positives I see with Dave is this. He's from Athltcio, so is less likely to move to R.Madrid who have an annoying habit of signing our players. Also with Barca signing ter Stegan and the chile bloke, it makes it good for us. Long live Agent Dave.

Yep, give him a new 10 year deal, having failed that 6-year will do to start with! Always loved him, and with more Spaniards at United I am sure he will stay with us for years to come.
Next season he will even improve on his only weaknesses under LvG and his gk coach. After that he will be THE complete goal keeper. One of our best transfers ever!

One of the goalkeepers with most potential that I have witnessed, his development curve is scary as well so he looks as if he will reach all that potential. My man for the captaincy and should be given a great contract and squad status, I think he is possibly our best player in terms of how they rank in the world with Mata.

Neuer is better than DDG still, but bar that I can't name anybody but Courtois who is near his level.

The stars are just lining up for him at United, to be the best complete Gk in the world.

His shot stopping ability was already there since United signed him, so he must got that in Spain. In his first couple seasons with United, he was trained by a gk coach who partly responsible for VdS became so good in positioning when with us. Then last year, amid a disastrous season league wise, he was trained under manager/coach who 'specialized' on (lots and lots of) crossing.

Then next season, rumor has it that the new coach like to emphasize on ball distribution (which DDG was actually already pretty good, as his first two seasons have showed).

Ripper post. Love the guy so much - I just absolutely love watching a player grow and mould, how on earth people moan their tits off and throw a strop over the development of some players is completely beyond me. It's one of the finest aspects of the game when a young lad comes to a big club, faces some hardship and fights through it. It's part of what United is all about.
