The Football Association says it is investigating an allegation that referee David Coote discussed giving a yellow card with a fan before a Championship match.

Coote, 42, says he denies the new claims and calls them "false and defamatory allegations".

The referee is already under investigation by the FA and has been suspended by refereeing body the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) and European football's governing body Uefa following separate allegations about his conduct.

A new report in the Sun newspaper on Tuesday claimed Coote exchanged messages with a fan discussing giving a yellow card before and after a game between Leeds and West Brom in 2019.

The exchange refers to a booking Leeds defender Ezgjan Alioski received in the match from Coote. There is no suggestion of any financial gain by Coote and the booking is regarded as entirely correct.

Think it's worth separating this from the main thread.

I don't think there's any way back for him as a ref.

He's done.

I doubt he's the only one doing stupid shit, he's the only who has gotten caught so far.

It’s hard to feel bad for the guy when you’re going round videoing yourself doing illegal stuff like snorting coke. But then again it’s his mates who were clearly sitting on these videos hoping to one day stitch him up. Bet the sun or whoever have paid a pretty penny for these clips. But then maybe he’s done something to them recently to deserve it.

Either way it’s pretty sad that someone is gonna lose their job over calling Jurgen Klopp a c*nt. I don’t think the clips of him doing drugs would’ve got him banned on their own - a lot of match going footy fans take coke themselves so don’t think there’d be as much backlash.

I’ve always felt abit bad for referees. They get paid basically feck all but are massively recognisable public figures that are often some of the most hated people in the country

Guy must have a single digit IQ. Why in the world would you allow yourself to be filmed saying stuff like that and doing coke?

He's bang to rights in the perception of bias and the coke, but those are some utter shit friends.

Who is that filming him? If they're his mates, why would they do that? If he's just at some random afters then he's got issues.

There have been rumours going around (I wouldn't know how true) that he is gay and the person filming him was his partner and they recently broke up hence the timing...

EDIT: And the person he was communicating with in regards to getting money on there being a booking for a certain player was someone he met over the internet and perhaps was looking to meet in real life and therefore impress him.

Sad to see a guy potentially losing his job over a bit of coke and speaking facts.

I mean I think he would probably be done with refereeing at the top level for just the Klopp comments alone. You factor in coke and match fixing yellow cards talk (even if it was just coke bs talk) then there is no doubt about it.

His profile is high right now (for the wrong reasons, but it doesn’t matter). The “right” move here is to get on all the socials, he’d build a big following quickly, and monetize by commenting on refereeing decisions every week and everything to do with football.

He’d probably end up making more money than he was making as a referee.

yeah i called that when the first video broke. there’s definitely a gay vibe to it. i’m used to spotting things like that after spending so long interacting with @moses.

I bet the guy filming him used this to blackmail him for few years and then thought why not sell it to a media outlet for money.

I wonder if Klopp came out and said something along the lines of, "I forgive him, blah blah blah...he shouldn't loose his job" if that would make any difference. It's the only way I could see him not loosing his job

Yeah from reading the article that seemed odd and probably lines up to those rumours. I think he probably was joking but as a referee, why are you talking/joking about booking a player with a new "online friend". He then followed it up after, asking whether they put a bet on, just seems a bit daft and like you say trying to show off to someone.

I think everybody has made mistakes in their life but if it's this obvious and out there, I don't think you can expect any faith in impartiality moving forward so I do wonder how they move forward here - On top of that he has released a statement basically saying he wants to do it the hard way by saying he "Strongly refutes false and defamatory statements" when it's as clear as day what happened.

I notice whenever sky sports show a clip of him, he's wiping his nose!

At this rate, in two weeks time we’re going to discover this fecker shot JFK.

Because people who do coke aren't usually renowned for their decision making capabilities?

He's left himself bang open for any other allegations made up or not now.
Bribery, giving cards, hating this team that team . There's no way back from the combination of all this nonsense.

How have none of the newspapers come up with the headline "Crazy As A Coote" FFS. Thought that would be the obvious go to headline.

Not defending what he's done, but whoever his mates are, they are a bunch of rats. Dobbed him in it, at least twice.

He was a dumdum for saying all of that on camera, but the guy filming him is a scab.

I doubt he's the only referee who thinks Klopp is a twat, but he was the one dumb enough to say it whilst being recorded.

It's a massive fall from grace. It takes years to get to the Premier League as a referee. After a quick lookup, it seems he was refereeing non-league football between 1998 and 2010, then in the football league to 2018, and then the PL from 2018 onwards. So 20 years to reach the top, and he's gone and lost it all.

Looks like he's better suited to being a linesman.

I'll get my coat.

Why would he let someone record him? Even if he worked in Tesco letting someone record you doing coke would be idiotic nevermind being a premier league ref

It's really stupid, but I have possible theory. Some people do stupid shit for to fit in, to be liked or to be seen as good laugh and one of the boys. They have a diffcult time saying no, or even come up with the idea of doing daft things themselves for a bit attention.

Most grow out of that need to impress in childhood, their teens or in early adulthood but it's not always the case. Some people are just insecure like that and it leads them to take silly risks.

Might be going way too far with my armchair psychology here, and to be honest I'm describing myself a bit as sad as that is so could it just be projection. It happens though.
