David Alaba... The betrayer

If available for a reasonable price, he's a player we could actually do with. He’s an experienced player that brings quality to several positions. can play as a centre back, left back as well as a wing back.

CM too.

This puzzled me as well. I find Varane the better of the two. He is the more complete CB.

Martinez benefits from being ‘new’, I’d like to see him do it over multiple seasons and in Europe for United before I declare him better. Heinze had a similarly great first season for United and then never hit that level again. Like at the World Cup Varane was a key player for France whereas Martinez couldn’t make the Argentina team ahead of Otamendi and Romero.

I'm so confused by the thread title.

The google translate of the article threw up something like "Alaba is ready to betray Florentino Perez" (by leaving). Probably just a weird mistranslation or word that makes sense to use in that context in Catalan.

Either way, it's horseshit. Nacional have plenty of form for just making shit up that doesn't even make sense.

He'd be a lovely addition to the squad for a couple of years. Captains his country and has played at the highest level, so would help raise the level in the dressing room along with Varane and Casemiro.

However, I thought he was on something like 400K a week, and as others have pointed out, would he be a guaranteed first XI player? He can play LB and LCB as well as cover for Casemiro and he can partner Casemiro too. Over the course of the season he'd likely play 40 matches or so, so maybe.

If Real are in a tricky place with FFP they might just be trying to offload all the high earners as soon as possible, instead of selling someone like Tchouaméni (whom some posters seem to think they might sell - in which case, obviously I hope this club gets creative with FFP).

To bad it’s probably horseshit. God tier defender who can play all 4 back line positions at top level.

He's certainly used to winning things.. All those titles with bayern and then more pots with real

Only way this has any legs is if madrid need to top up their fund for buying mbappe this summer and need to jettison a few players.

Cant see alaba leaving though. Very talented player. Plays CM for his country, which is important if your looking at going to a box midfield in posession, especially of hes playing as CB or LB, stepping up into the box midfield that arteta and guardiola love so much.

If its true then it only makes sense if he's backup to Casemiro and Martinez, which probably isnt what a player at his level is really looking for. Presuming it was true and that he would be content with that role then yeah, great stuff.

If he came we could play 3 at the back with him bombing forward in transitions, as cover for Shaw, casemiro or martinez though

I dont see how. He's basically the same profile as Martinez as a defender. Presuming Varane is the centre of the three because he's the aerial presence then to shift to a back 3 we'd need a technical, press resistant right sided centre half, not another left sided one. Shaw already provides left sided back up.

Certainly hope not this transfer would certainly turn the club into a retirement home. Take more chances on youth in the market to replace Varane in the coming seasons. Ideally the same should be done for Casemiro.

If he was 3 years younger then I’d be open to this. Very versatile so could back-up LCB, LB, DM, maybe even RB if he inverts - so he’d be incredibly useful as a squad option.

But at 31, 400k per week, probably £30m minimum transfer fee, very little potential for any resale value, and no clear gap in our starting XI for him to slot into.

It’s a no from me.

Agreed, the age alone is the biggest factor. Next to Varane and Casemiro I don't think the club should target more players closer to their 30's as opposed to younger untested prospects in the market. I've said this all summer that the team is being put together as opposed to being built. It's more sustainable long term with FFP, future finances etc to build a younger team under a new manager when the previous set of players have vastly underperformed.

I'd consider Mount, Antony and Malacia to be the ideal benchmark for the club with having a directive in the market. While Casemiro is world class and undoubtedly signalled the success for last season this profile of signing shouldn't happen again.

Does not make much sense. Not fast enough anymore to play LB in the long run, never really impressed me as CDM. One of the best LCB in the world for sure, but this is a position which certainly is not among our most urgent ones to fix.

I really really like the guy, but he was never world class at CB/LCB. And there’s a reason he only plays in midfield for Austria.
