David Alaba... The betrayer

He played LCB for Madrid, if I'm not mistaken? If so, I wouldn't drop Licha for him.
 
Would seem an odd signing? Big money/wages on position(s) we’re reasonably strong in, LCB and LB.
 
Madrid got him on a free.. dont need him with Rudiger and Militao starting and are looking to get some money.

Don't think there is anything to this story.
 
If he was a RCB it might make more sense to cover/compete with Varane but no chance he's taking Licha's spot.

We have currently 3 RCBs and 1LCB + Shaw to cover. Buying a LCB makes more sense in the squad number game. But things are never about numbers alone. We need someone who is comfortable with both feet, like Varane, but not so injury prone.
 
Good signing if we can do it. Can play LB, LCB and CM. Cover for Cass. Cover for Shaw, Licha. I get we all want the RCB. But let’s give Lindelof his fair dues. He’s RCB cover.
 
Alaba is a better player than Martinez imo, would be coming to start games. But makes no sense when Martinez is one of our better players and we have other clear deficiencies.

A lot better than Martinez is a ridiculous thing to say.

Alaba can play in various positions, wouldn’t be against it but I doubt this is a legitimate target.
 
Maybe if we're playing 3 at the back and we are getting rid of Maguire

I didn't say he was a lot better, I just said I thought he was better. He's won two Champions Leagues as starting centre back in the last 4 years. Martinez is a good player too and on the up but hasn't achieved that level yet.

Alaba's last season was pretty poor between injuries and defensive level, the best thing that happened vs Liverpool was when he had to be changed because of injury in the first 15-20 minutes as his side was a huge hole and Salah had a free pass. I assume the starters are going to be Rudiger - Militao.

With a good first season and a pretty bad second one, If they can get some decent money, I wouldn't care much if he leaves but I doubt this is legit.
 
Nothing in this story. We aren't signing somebody to bench Licha and he won't come to be a backup at this point. He would be very good cover for Shaw/Martinez/Casemiro but at this point I don't think he is as good as any of those 3, and none of them get injured very often and none ever get benched.

How good could he be as a Defensive Midfielder though? I think it would only make sense if he could indeed be good at covering for Casemiro, or coming on later in games alonside Casemiro when trying to defend a lead. Would he be better, or at least as good, at this as the likes of Lavia or Amrabat?

One potential drawback with him there is that he seems supposedly quite poor in the air - and Casemiro's heading ability is a major asset in both boxes which Utd lack many other contributors towards. Ideally any other DM Utd sign should also be decent in the air.

Its probably a nonsense story but nothing would annoy me more than making this kind of signing. We need to stop signing players whose best years are behind them.

This puzzled me as well. I find Varane the better of the two. He is the more complete CB.

Don’t agree and pretty sure the majority wouldn’t agree with you on this.
 
It is BS story. Especially when we are so tight on FFP.
But don't forget that he played dmc for Austria. So he is an ideal 12th player who covers 3 positions.
