David Alaba | Real makes the next attempt (according to AS)

Is Alaba really that good as a CM as I've only seen him play there for Austria and he wasn't particularly impressive. Has he played there for Bayern much?

He really isn't. It would be stupid to make the probably best LB in the world a mediocre CM.
I think deep down, he even knows himself and that's why he never pushed for a move.

You did, didn't you?

Nah, don't think I could get close enough to get past any suspicion. I was just far enough from the man for the hoes to have doubts. Still, I did alright on my own two feet though.

He was awful at Euro 2016, no doubt.

But I was very impressed by him against Ireland during qualifiers a few years ago. His long range shooting and ability to drive forward at pace are his two main assets in a midfield three.

Anyone else see this as a panic buy? They need a new shiny toy and we have taken their #1 target.
Just doesn't seem to be the player I thought they needed

Why are Bayern ''very unlikeable''?

Holier than thou attitude, comments from people associated with them regarding how we condone our business and run our club. Also their fans are generally the ones with most of a stick up their ass regarding the PL.

You shouldn't mind me though. I dislike everyone apart from MUFC.

Kek. Alaba can't defend. Pretty much like Marcelo. Obviously, David isn't better than the brazilian.

Meh, it didn't happen the last 10 times some spanish "newspaper" made that rumour up and it won't happen this time either.

Bayern are paying a maximum €80m for Sanches. No fecking way they accept at for Alaba.
Don't think that's the correct figure, know Uefa released that, why would Bayern spend that amount when his buyout clause was 45m Euros? Makes no sense. Nor does paying 35 and then 45 in potential bonuses.

Nah he's one of the best players in the world in my opinion, non transferable for a club like bayern, because you cant replace him.

No other figures have ever been reported.

What you mean no other figures? As in no other than the 80m?

Yup. 35mil that can potentially go up to 80 is what's been reported from the beginning. First time I hear about his buyout clause being only 45mil, can I read up on that somewhere?
They'll have their reasons I guess (insurance against buying a flop? Tax reasons? beats me).

Sky Sports and BBC in UK say 35 then rising to a total 45m

Sanches signed a new contract at Benfica in November, which contained a release clause which would be triggered by a transfer offer of £35m (45m euros).

This is madness. How would they know he's worth 80 mil in midfield when he's barely played there?

bayern isn't going to let one of their key players go that easily without trying to thoroughly fleece the buying the club.
I am not saying they will but 80 mil is getting close to the world record. He is a very good playet but not a world record signing.

he's not a world record player, but there is 0 chance bayern is going to sell him anywhere near his market price.

He always Plays there for Austria and has been quite mediocre over the past years.

As a central midfielder not worth 80+ Mio IMO.
As a defender he isn't worth that even.

That's probably what Bayern would expect if they were to ever sell him, which I don't think they would anyway, though.

He was so bad there during the Euros. Looked like headless chicken. Playing as a quasi CM in a team like Bayern in a Pep system is one thing but as an orthodox CM, for 80m? no way is he worth that imo. Plus i think Marcelo gives them so much going forwards.

Just a general note: We should not judge Alaba's skills and competencies in midfield by looking at the Euro 2016 only. Austria had a nightmare of a tournament. No one had his normal shape. There were quarrels within the team. The coach made a few bad decisions. So even if Alaba would have had a good shape, it would have been a mission impossible.

In short: Alaba is much, much better in midfield than he was at the Euro. For example he was quite good in many matches for Austria during qualification. However, of course he is not 80 mio euro good as midfielder.

(But he could be... let him play 10 matches in a row there and maybe you have a new midfield star. Alaba also looked horrible as CB for Bayern when they had the injury crisis, but after a few matches he was much more solid. But to end with a general note: Last season was Alaba's weakest - still on a very high level course. Let's see how is doing this year.)

€80m is no. £80m yeah may be take it if Bayern can find his replacement.

I agree that Alaba is not a potential world class CM (but @Kant-ona is right too, not nearly as bad as his EURO performance suggests). But I suspect that Real want to buy him primarily as an upgrade to Casemiro, which might actually work. Because he wouldn't play as an all-purpose CM then, but as a versatile holding midfielder, which is quite a difference and may suit his talents and limitations better.

He would not roam the entire midfield box-to-box style (as he often did for Austria), but remain positioned deeper, mostly providing cover for Real's CM and offense and play a more limited role during possession. In comparison to Casemiro, his better overall intelligence, greater versatility and superior skillset would still give Modric & Kroos a much better partner in that midfield three.

But of course Bayern won't sell, so it's a purely theoretical discussion.
