He's honestly nothing special, and I can say the same for most of that Dutch back line, they are all decent but that's it.

Looks to me like a CB playing RB i.e. Not very comfortable in possession and not the best pace.
Not really stood out either and would like to see Rafa as number one providing he stays injury free.

Either way, I don't think much of Varela as yet. He's obviously got something about him but I think his positioning isn't great, he's not strong enough and his decision making is woeful. I think Janko could go on to have a much better career although it remains to be seen at which position. Personally I'd rather play Keane at RB if Rafael's injured than either of them but would be excited to see Janko get a chance as I think he's got the most potential of the three.

Odd post. Varela's positioning and decision making are much better than Janko's at this stage. And he's plenty strong enough, in fact he's a very powerful player.
 
Fair enough, I disagree but I haven't watched all that many games of him except towards the end of the season. Do you think Varela's ready to play right back at first team level out of interest?

That's a very good question. He has some maturing to do but I'd play him over Jones, Smalling or Valencia. He's potentially a top class player so hopefully LvG will throw him in at the deep end at some stage.
 
Phenomenal explanation to drop a player. Unfortunately, Layun roasted Verhaeg multiple times. If De Jonh is healthy and starts then I'd expect Kuyt at RB/RWB and Blind at LB/LWB against Costa Rica.
 
That for me is the Dutch teams worst position. Janmaat and Verhaegh were a bit piss going forward.

They're also shaky in the back, even though Verhaegh is an actual centre-back, just not enough quality, but it's not just the right-back position. No wonder they play with 5 defenders, they are fecked without the numerical superiority.
 
Awful tonight wasn't he. Horrible distribution. Him and Kuyt were both terrible going forward.

His passing ability is a travesty, particularly going forward. Very average player and hopefully he joins Newcastle as soon as possible, so this rumour dies out quickly.
 
Clumsy performance. Almost heavily injured one of his opponents because simply couldn't control the ball.

Tbh I would play any out of Vermijl,Varela and M.Keane over Smalling in RB.Varela will be blooded in next season if everything's going according to plain.
