Darwin Núñez / signs for Liverpool

Is it just me or does it look like a prem keeper would save all those? That last one was a really odd decision making from the keeper.

The second one was a relatively easy save. First and last, most GKs dont save IMO. First was hit well and very low, last hit the post.

I'd take him. I've seen people doubt his technical ability but his movement, intuition in the box and goalscoring record can't be ignored.

I get that it's important to get recruitment right but it's also important to remember we aren't in a position to be turning our noses up at good players.

I like the look of Darwin, but the only issue I see is that he looks a bit cumbersome/clumsy. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong as I've only seen limited footage.

If we get him, I'm hoping he's more Diego Costa than Lukaku. Costa always looked technically off but it somehow worked, he was impossible to tackle with his back to goal, rolled people and his shots always seemed to find the corners by hook or by crook.

Nunez does seem to have some of that but hard to judge. His slightly loose touch my have him found out at a higher level.

If Atletico wants him, we should be going all out and getting him ourselves. Atletico are brilliant at buying strikers. Forlan, Falcao, Greizmann, Costa etc. I’m sure i have missed out a couple too

Jackson Martínez and Morata too

How can Chelsea be involved?
You think we won’t be signing any players? Ownership will be sorted long before the summer window opens.

A key difference between Nunez and Lukaku seems to be work rate off the ball. Lukaku is one of the worst strikers around if you want a pressing CF whereas Nunez appears to be one of the better ones.

If he brought a high-intensity pressing game, physicality and (crucially) goalscoring then we might be able to live with somewhat loose technique. Especially given our prospective manager's current team operates with a big goalscoring CF who is notably less technical than the rest of the team.

Whether he actually would bring that I have no idea, I haven't seen near enough of him. Would be interesting to see what posters who follow that league think.

Benfica can feck off, 70 million for a player with average technique. We really need to flex our scouting abilities and find some bargains because these types of signings aren't sustainable for non-oil clubs.

I don’t think you’re in an auction for a 70m player while suffering sanctions, no. What can you even tell the player about your future plans? How can anyone know what direction your club is going? Will the new owners even spend 70m on a player?
It’s ludicrous

I think it’s more the fact that you have one player who looks amazing as a striker and another who cost you 100m on the bench, I’d imagine it’s the last position you need a big money signing in.

I've read about him and those who have watched him say whilst he has good qualities he's technically poor and vastly outperforming his xG. The price quoted seems way overblown and reeks of agent talk.

Well players, particularly strikers, are not priced on their first touch. And why on Earth would a club want to sell a 22 year old 30 goal striker for less than 70m euros anyway?

Regarding Nuñez, I’m traditionally a technique freak myself, but I do make an exception when it comes to centre forwards. That is the only position for me where all that really matters is whether you can score a lot of goals or not.

Haaland is a technically average player to me. He’s a supreme goalscorer though, and as a result, is a top #9 who would be my overwhelming first choice. I think Cavani is technically average too. Martial is technically excellent, but doesn’t score enough goals.

If Nuñez could come here and score 25-35 goals, he’d be brilliant, however he manages to do it.

Uh, what? The club itself isn’t under sanction, Abramovich is. As soon as we have a new ownership in place we’re back to “normal.” We almost certainly won’t be shopping in the very highest bracket anymore (or at least not as often) but this summer will be business as usual in terms of signing players I think. A brand new owner will want to make a splash and show the supporters their ambition.

Yeah, I’m not saying we’ll try for this guy. Just that we WILL be making signings.

This channel has all his games (and every other Uruguayan player in europe) and this is the video from last weekend.

He’s elite physically and is a very good finisher. He’s also got great movement off the ball and intensity with his running. Yeah he’s raw/clumsy at times - and his first touch/hold up play needs to improve but he’s not poor technically. He has two good feet and is a good dribbler - if ETH can make Haller a world beater he’s going to love this kid. Lots to work with.

The reported fees are usually made up of performances related add-ons and that is usually around 10-15m so the actual sum being paid upfront is probably around £45m.

It’s April! Nobody has a clue what your spending will look like and time is running out since the end of the season is 6 odd weeks away.
And Chelsea are under sanctions because your owner is under sanctions. You can’t even replace your jerseys without permission never mind enter negotiations for a 70m pound player

Think his apparent lack of technical quality isn’t that big of a deal, a lot of the best strikers we’ve seen weren’t too great technically. Cavani for example is one of the best goalscorers of the last 20 years and he can be a right donkey at times. Ultimately the only thing that matters is where he can score 30 a season for us because if he can none of the other stuff really matters.

I’m not talking about entering negotiations right now. I’m talking about us signing players this summer. Which we will do.

And even despite sanctions right now you’re foolish if you think agents and intermediaries aren’t talking with Chelsea currently behind the scenes. We’re one of the best operators in the market. It’s impossible to think those who run the club are just sitting on their hands right now in some sort of paralysis.

So yes, you’re right, we probably aren’t going to spend 70m on this guy. But to think we aren’t sniffing around and talking to potential targets because of sanctions is wrong.

Only 8 weeks and 4 days till the Muppet season begins.

It's not certain at all.

So, Chavs want to drop a fortune on another striker?

£100M on Lukaku, didn't work out, bin him, try another. Didn't Lampard spunk a fortune on a striker who didn't work out either?

Chelsea get such a free ride, when, actually, they're little better than City.

We’ll likely have an opener in place within a month. And it’s not like the opens and closes within the span of a week. We have months to work on deals even if the ownership situations drags on.

But you have no idea about budgets etc. you can’t even sign someone like Rudiger to a contract. You’re burning up your cash reserves as you are laying in limbo.
There’s no way to prove this either way but if it was important to get Ten Hag in for us so we don’t get left behind in chasing transfer targets then God knows how that doesn’t come into play when it’s actual owners involved. You literally can’t make any promises to a player. It really seems like wishful thinking.

To add to this: Benfica bought him from Almeria for 20m euros in the first place, who hold a rumoured 20% sell-on clause.

Even further, Benfica make good money when they sell. Felix went for over 100m; Dias around 60. Ederson, Lindelof, and Semedo were all in the 30m mark all in the same window. Raul Jimenez was sold to Wolves for 34m!

Nunez will not be cheap at all.

Not when we have Broja who's potentially better than this chap.

Assuming you mean Werner, who has played as a striker for about 3 games during his time here, and was signed as a replacement for the outgoing Pedro, Willian, and 120m Hazard. I wouldn't say £45m is exactly a fortune anyway by todays standards.

I say this all the time to my friends. Chelsea were the original City before City became what they are today. They get a free pass because City, PSG, and others have come along and been so much more "in your face" about things (and because, at least in America, there are a lot of fans who started following the PL after Chelsea had already established this new era and City were in the early to mid stages of their own project) , but I personally still reserve a special level of vitriol for Chelsea.

I think he is the best worst player we've had in recent years

Technically average (at best), dumb af, but somehow a constant threat to the opposition... He excels in speed and stamina, and is also a good finisher

I will miss him

This guy is going to flop big time.

Keep in mind guys like Jackson Martínez and Slimani were much better in Portugal then Darwin has been.

Could be some of my Benfica hate giving In but I don’t think he will be top striker in the game. Midtable EPL seems about right.

Simply not true. Besides Darwin stepping up against the likes of Barcelona, Bayern and Liverpool this season

I'm getting sick of these fees. 70 million for Antony. 70 million for Nunez. 80 million for Tchouameni. These players have just started and already costing an arm and a leg? Who even knows if they will come good when playing at the very top? Big money and a lot of risk. I wanted us to go in for him, but at around 40-50M. We should have gone in for Alvarez.

Nunez already cost us 25 million + future profit fees

Well, if Ronaldo is struggling to score with this squad. Imagine Nunez? Being technically average is a problem if playing with our current squad because he will need creative players to give him the service. Who does he have if he joins? Bruno and Sancho only. He won’t score if he expects Rashford and Elanga to give him the service and our full backs don’t provide enough assists despite of Ronaldo playing as our striker.

A good false 9 can support VDB, Rashford, Sancho, Bruno, and Elanga to score goals. A traditional no 9 will need better players around him than what we are currently have. It depends how we are going to build our team next season.

I'd take him for 40-50m.

Surely we have someone that can negotiate a bit. We should throw in Pereira/Bailly or some other deadwood player with some value in the deal as a sweetener.

Sorry mate but you are wrong here. I don't know why you keep banging this drum of 'Chelsea can't do this now' - yes we know this, we all watch the news funnily enough and are very aware of their current restrictions, however as has been mentioned new ownership is imminent and we're talking about future plans, not right now.

As Orc said they will have new owners in place come the summer transfer window and no restrictions - yes we don't know what their budget will be like, but it's completely reasonable to suggest the new owners whoever they are - being that they are following on from a very successful period under Abramovich that included heavy investment - will want to gain fan's trust quickly and will willingly spend a bit of money in the summer to do so.
