Darwin Núñez / signs for Liverpool

We basically have to sign a striker ignoring the fact that Ronaldo is around as he's only here for a year or two and hasn't got the legs to press etc If we can't risk upsetting him or he can't rotate then we may as well just sign some bit part mediocre CF who will give us an option. But I'd prefer we really bring in someone who can be a first choice 9 next season. Otherwise we'll just be saddled with another unsaleable asset.

Tbing is despite scoring a fair few I don't think the Ronaldo situation is comparable to Kane at Spurs who is undeniably complete whereas Ronaldo at his age is not. For me we need a proper CF one who can start many games and be relied on and when needed also partner Ronaldo.
I totally agree that we need to be looking beyond the next 12 months, but the reality is that this is Cristiano Ronaldo. When he signed this season gone, there were 35 league games left, he featured in 30. Even at the age of 37 going 38, he'll probably feature in about 70-80% of our matches next season, at least.

Unless said first choice number 9 is happy to be a bit part for a year (no striker worth their quality is doing that), or Ronaldo suddenly decides to leave this summer (very unlikely, I don't see many suitors at the moment) -- I just don't see how we balance Ronaldo and another top quality no.9 who will want to be first choice.

I personally think we'll just have to grit another 12 months, let Ronaldo go, and then get a proper striker in. Especially with all the other positions of priority. I'd hope we fix the midfield (with at least 2 CM's), an actual RW, and either a fullback/CB.

Seems to me he's just an overpriced Raul Jimenez.

When watching his every goal of the season compilation, few of his goals show a lot of skill - many are tap-ins, and few above Jimenez level (not that it's something to strive for)

Stay away imo.

One way to look at it is, if Liverpool want him then we must sign him! Not only to stop them from getting stronger but also they usually get there targets and players spot on.

Another way to look at it is if he's terrible - Pretty sure City were glad they dodged Alexis Sanches back then. No matter how good at recruitment Liverpool is, they sure can get it wrong too. It's just less visible because they buy for their system, and have maybe the best manager in the World at personally developing players.

A Raul Jimenez with a goalscoring touch and the mentality to play for a big club would have been a top class striker. The very definition of a 'what if' striker to me.

Agreed. Even with all that, he was probably the most complete CF in the league after Kane before his head injury.

You said it yourself. If he had a great goalscoring gene it's probably not Jimenez any longer but a Luca Toni or Higuain type.

What I'm saying is just that I dont see this guy looking more capable than Jimenez skill-wise. But then again Jimenez has never played for Klopp or a great manager.

Aye we should just offer Martial to Newcastle.

Would Newcastle be a better suitor? At least they wouldn't worry a lot about Martial's goals. And Martial used to perform spectacularly against them so it might be easier to convince.
They've just signed/are signing a new french wonderkid. Nobody wants old hat Martial now.

We are in need of attackers who are able and willing to consistently make the runs that turn balls into the box into tap ins.

With the exception of Ronaldo, we don't have anyone in our squad who will naturally make those runs, and Ronaldo has had to help out in build-up play due to the lack of expertise there too.

Given the attacking options out there, I genuinely don't think there is a viable alternative out there right now.

Haaland is at City, Mbappe is staying, Lewa is headed to Barca if anywhere - these are/were the top-tier options, who are beyond us currently.

Next available tier you're looking at Jesus (won't come here), Lukaku (been there, stay well clear), and who? Nkunku, Scamacca, Nunez?

Nunez is the best option there imo.

I love how fans of every club think Newcastle are the answer to their shite castoffs.
Yeah, so far there’s zero evidence to show that they are as stupid as us at transfers. Even their unsexy forward purchase punctured a competitors chance of Premiership survival.

[John Percy, Telegraph] Darwin Nunez is determined to join a Champions League club, which could be bad news for Manchester United. A move to Spain is currently seen as the most likely outcome.

Rather a stop gap and go for Felix next summer.
This is also who my preference would be. He must be sick with the way his career has gone under Simeone so hopefully he refuses any contract extensions and we don’t have to pay some whopper transfer.

Toney, Watkins, Richarlison, Calvert Lewin looks the same level imo. I agree, not many great out there, but a new one might emerge next summer, so not sure the price quoted for Nunez is a good deal. He wont develop truly when we need to give time to Ronaldo neither

Except for Atletico, who would buy him in Spain for that fee? He looks like a Simeone striker to be fair.

Lot of social media smoke about Liverpool interest … likely usual “click me, click me”.

Some basic highlights of his game v them in the Q/F (“other highlight packages are available”).

Lot of scousers have been reposting the VVD and Klopp quote given the rumors of their interest

If the scousers are coveting him then it’s be lovely if he chose us instead. Especially with the above video of him running the show against their beloved reds.
Nunez is some player……. And he’s off to United la!:devil:

Given his exorbitant price, he's surely a smokescreen for someone else, no? We can't possibly buy him, de Jong and 2-3 others in the same window.

He looks good in the highlights Vs Liverpool. Ok he might not be Thierry Henry in terms of his technique but in that sense he looks like he has more than enough technical ability and good energy too, which is a must for any player we bring in now. Obviously I'd love a great footballer at CF, like a Joao Felix type, but from this highlights he looks like he could be equally as effective in a different way. I always liked Diego Costa, who was very similar by the looks of it.

My personal opinion, and this has nothing to do with him playing for Benfica, would say the same if it was coming from Sporting, I sincerely doubt he is the type of player wanted by Ten Haag, more laughable was reading posts here saying he would bench Ronaldo, yes he is younger and presses more, but from the technical point of view he is average even if he is explosive when he has space to run, but I doubt Ten Haag will play counterattacking football against the big teams like Benfica did in the Champions League or in the big games in Portugal, let alone the ridiculous price they are asking, surely there are better options on the market for the prices they are demanding.

he has plenty of threat in and around the box. people talk like he’s purely a counter attack machine which just isn’t true.

I think some forget he’s only 22, that’s still pretty young for a striker. He won’t be the answer to all our problems but right now we don’t have a lot of choices.

We have to get goals into this team to help Ronaldo share the burden.

We aren’t shopping for the likes of Felix, and what other great strikers are there available?

Ok but not at any price, come on there must be other type of options in the market. If you want my opinion he is more suited to Newcastle than United, if coming to United would be stupidity beyond belief to pay something bordering the 100 million euros tag, the guy responsible for that should go straight to prison, if Newcastle has silly money to spend it’s their problem, time for a club with the size of United to be ruled by reason and logic and to not be taken hostage by football agents or despair to show they are doing something spending big to shut up the fans who want new toys, hope Ten Haag has a say on the type of players hired for the club.
