Never dared to hope that Fletcher would prove as effective as soon as he has. Might not be as dynamic and ever-present as before the illness, but he's got a calmness about him on the ball, refuses to be flustered, and knows when to pass forward and when to relieve pressure by recycling it through the defensive line, which I think is super important in terms of keeping the pressure off us.

Long may it continue!

Lacking stamina reserves but a better option than Cleverley right now. Speaks volumes where our level of midfielders are right now.

I love Fletch. He's been a magnificent addition to the squad these past few weeks. Absolutely no bullshit or excuses from him. Some of his teammates, especially the more experienced ones, could learn a thing or two from him.

Completely. Definitely one of the best speakers within the team. And a great influence on the pitch also.

He plays like he remembers we're Manchester United.

A shot in the arm getting him back. Like the US Cavalry in the old cowboy movies - out of ammunition, Injuns everywhere, the bugle sounds in the distance, and Fletcher rides to the rescue on his white horse.
He is a great character, but the way you formulated that is just...

Rooney future captain??? Eh yeah feck off!!

This guy is an incredible man and is Manchester United through and through! He's also an inspiration to every person around!

fecking unreal seeing him play again

Yup. I said it in one of the other threads previously that if he could become a regular again in our first eleven, he should be our next captain. So far the signs are positive. So happy for fletcher.

Still only 29 and a player that hasn't got many miles on the clock, at this point he is our first choice midfield partner to Carrick and there's a massive drop-off after that. Just the fact that he can receive the ball, control it and pass it to a team-mate puts him leagues ahead of the competition.
He should certainly be the bar for qualifying as Manchester United midfielder - his level and above only.

As has been said in here by numerous people, he brings back a recall of what a United midfielder should bring to the table as a default - heart, conviction and the bottle to try the positive pass.

Im just so pleased that he is back. Hard to believe he is already playing decently after almost 2 years out. A real testament to his character and professionalism. Once the whipping boy of the team, he has now matured into a leader and inspiration. Just goes to show it would be madness to give up on the likes of Cleverley so quickly.

I can't really see him being one of our starting centre mids next season. He's doing a good job at the minute but there'll be a lot of disappointment if we don't sign someone better defensively for one of the positions and someone with an ounce of creativity for the other. Great to see him back at the moment though as we're far better with him than Cleverley.

I think he would make a great captain, especially if Vidic does one in the summer. It's such a shame that he was struck down at his peak. I know some got carried away with the world class stuff, but the Darren Fletcher of 2009-10 was some player: hassled and harried when defending, great movement, sharp passing, and an eye for goal.
I fecking love Darren Fletcher!

That season he was excellent and put in many a world class performance, whilst not necessarily being a world class player. He would definitely be an excellent captain. You can see his leadership skills when he is playing. He seems to organise everything and constantly communicates with the players, especially the younger ones.

His spatical awareness is only matched by Carrick in midfield today. The difference between Fletcher and a player like Kagawa (who is more gifted with his feet) is that Darren will help the whole team out. You see him running around pointing with his hand all the time, making sure players are positioned.

This is something Keano did and Ferdinand, and to a lesser extent Vida. So without these sort of conductors the team will not be as solid and players often get caught in traps and make tactical mistakes. His team work is also outstanding. He will never be found on the wrong side of the ball.

I'm extremely impressed by his progress after all that time out. He will definitely be valuable for us the coming 5 years.

What do people think about the likelihood of Fletch becoming a manager one day?

His composure and decision making has an air of Ole to it in some ways, and similarly i can't imagine that he didn't use his time out with illness to advances his football learning so to speak.

I think he would make a great captain,

I'd even be inclined to give him the armband next week against Chelsea given the benefits of having a good organiser out on the pitch [he's a calmness would be a positive too].

Very likely and I was thinking this myself after noticing how well he reads the game.

I always hoped he would be captain one day, would be the final thing to really silence people who still were against him during his peak a few years ago. I think it's unlikely now but in all honesty it doesn't matter. He's a leader armband or not. That's something we've been lacking. Every team needs more than one leader on the pitch.

There's a lot of replies in this thread from complete and total tossers that are waiting to be dug up.

He was brilliant yesterday. The way he was organizing the team and seemed to be always available for a pass. So glad to see him back.

Getting fletch back feels like having the top class new multimillion pound midielder that we all hoped Fellaini would be......Fletch is just top drawer.....exactly the type of leader we need in the team now to keep some of our other not so brave midfielders on the bench for a while

He was very good, but he looks to have lost quite a lot of mobility, both in terms of capacity and pace.

Yes he understandably doesn't move around as much as he did before. Having said that, and this is only based on yesterday's match, he was so involved in pur play and was always available for a pass. As simple as that sounds, it was vital to us keeping the ball in the second half. He used his experience and leadership very well and had a very good match.

Surely it will take him a few months to hit his old capacity for mobility and pace, there's no way to get into game shape than playing in matches.

Really impressive the other day. He was running the show in the second from midfield with Carrick only supporting. A lot of forward passes played centrally too.

Could have quite an important role to play in Europe for us.

I honestly thought we should move him to a coaching role as he was finished as a player for us, never have I been so pleased to be so wrong. Fletcherinho for captain NOW

I'll admit that I never thought he'd make a comeback either. Very glad that Fletch has proven me (and many others I'm sure) wrong.

I'm pleased to gloat that I never wrote him off. Even argued against @Cina that he shouldn't be discounted when talking of players in midfield when analysing our midfield going forward.

I also said don't write off Anderson until he's wearing a dress and singing, you win some you lose some I guess.

Shut up Pexbo, me being wrong is so last week.
I'll be the first to admit I was pretty adamant he'd never get back to a level good enough to play for us again, but he's been great today. I know it's only his second game back but if he can keep this up and keep getting fitter he will definitely prove me, and many others, completely wrong.

Such a massive boost to have him back.

Loved how positive he was, driving us forward. So refreshing. Feels like years since we've had someone like that in the engine room. Actually, in the whole team. We've been slow & predictable in our build up. Fletcher brought a threat and positivity from a central area. Neat and tidy, quick and accurate short forward passes to feet.

With the likes of Fletcher, Januzaj, Jones really desperate to improve and drive us forward, you can see some light at the end of the tunnel in terms of Moyes and the direction he wants to go in. When he gets more players in, his players, hopefully we can see a new, dynamic, attacking Utd side next season. One that is less predictable.

@datura mentioned the possibility of a Jones--Fletcher combination. You can imagine how difficult that would be to play against. Perhaps this could work for certain games as Moyes moves us away from 442 to a 4231 he sometimes used at Everton (http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee512/zonal_marking/ev-liv.jpg) where two of Neville, Osman, Arteta, Fellaini, Gibson, Rodwell played in central mid (one out and out defensive player - instead of Phil Neville, Phil Jones - next to one more technically gifted player. Arteta, Fletcher, or Carrick. With narrow winger/AM players in Pienaar, Bily, Miralles, Naismith and even Osman. Full backs over-lapping.

With better players at his disposal, the first season under his belt, a whole summer to get the players he wants in... well, it's a bit more positive than this time last week.

Shut up Pexbo, me being wrong is so last week.

You shut up. I'm right, this has never happened before, let me wallow in the beautiful sensation for a while longer.

Keep this up and I'll have to go into the Anderson thread and quote you to shit in there.

I don't know what you are talking about.

I'm sure I worded it all fairly carefully though with lots of "it's unlikely but if" type disclaimers.
