Daniel James | Officially Signs

From the clips and some posters who have watched/known the player, he looks an exciting prospect. I don’t know why we’d loan him while keeping other youth (chong). It’s not like we’re spoiled on wingers too.

Everything about him as a signing (plays both sides, good pace and energy) suggests he should be our backup winger next year.

Martial on the left, new signing on the right, James backs up both and Greenwood and Dalot as options behind him. Rashford can play out wide too. Up top it's Rashford and another striker signed to compete with him, seems Moussa Dembele is the likeliest at the moment, with Greenwood the #3 guy getting a few games, though if we really believe in Greenwood I'd be fine with a one year loan, free or cheap signing of a random striker with some qualities like Llorente or Mariano Diaz or some guy like that and spend the 40-50M instead on going after guys like Sancho, De Ligt and the midfielders and RB we need.

One thing I like about him: explosive, and he runs behind to give solutions.

First touch seems ok but finishing or crossing does not seem to be top notch so that could be wasted. But why not? He would make the opposition run a lot to defend against him.

He looks like someone who will be brilliant at pressing from the front. His work rate from the YouTube vids looks very good in general.

For reported 200-250k/wk, yes. One of the laziest in the league, inconsistent, with a so so output. He’s a total failure, imho.

I won’t be sad if we sell him.
It is ridiculous to call a 22-year old with 48 goals and 26 assists a failure especially when there's obvious scope for improvement. It is easy to chastise Martial, but it is also easy to forget that he is one of the best young forwards we've had in years, and his supposed 'so-so' output speaks for it. Perhaps he could do better, but a total failure? Laughable.

David bentley had an international profile, he was just as bang average as Lennon, guess who else has got an international profile ? Daniel James, seen as though you love your stats... he's got more international goals in 2 caps than Lennon got in 20

Iv never seen anyone selective read like you do, i clearly said Overmars had more to his game but you chose to ignore that, but if you think pace isnt the first and overiding thing anybody thinks about when it comes to Overmars, then you havnt got a clue, or your kidding yourself because it dosnt fit your argument. Saying Overmars had this and that to his game now is easy to do now we'v seen the player he become, but what would you have said when Ajax bought the young Overmars, a flying machine with just two goals in 42 games? Probably nothing because you wouldnt of had any youtube clips to go off back then, but no doubts you'd of fell back to his stats to right him off though. Youtube and stats...Lol at you lou. Thank god someone gave Overmars a chance eh!!

Giggs clearly said James had the talent to go along with his pace, you chose to ignore that aswel, maybe your the one whos blind as a bat.

You claim James is just a speed merchant, but you claim he's two footed, rapid and can shoot well, which one is it because your contradicting yourself?

Not much to be the best young player, when his competition is Rashford and Lingard in attack, though.

As one of the laziest forward in the League, those numbers in 178 games doesn't justify his presence. Also those numbers are jacked up by his explosive first season. He reminds me of Anderson, young player who then become lazier and never improve. Thankfully he wasn't paid 200-250k/wk. We sure can't rely on player like Anderson, if we want to start challenging the League.

FFS. Just look at the attackers in our rivals.

Mane and Salah have better agility on the ball. That is the only thing that worries me about Daniel but I like his speed which doesn't diminish while he's on the ball. His first touch looks good too but his control doesn't look great but quite decent. I think there's a player in there.

Yeah, but if you loot at the examples I posted, the agility meant nothing, it was raw acceleration - on top of good finishing of course, but that goes with anyone.

@Loublaze I'm not comparing them to him, I'm saying they share attributes which make them good players. The examples I showed were demonstrating a good number of those goals were down to that attribute, so I don't understand why you said pace isn't really effective in the prem.

Not sure if the funeral has taken place but he has joined up with the Welsh team now. Reports indicate the deal is done but there is no rush and we will probably wait until he is back from international duty so Ed can make a big production number out of it.

I don’t think a big production number will go down well for James. Shirt and Ole will do. I’m sure Ed is aware of that. We’ll leave the leave the fireworks for De Ligt.

Yeah he is a player nobody knew about a month ago. No big production needed.

I don’t think the funeral has happened yet. There was an article yesterday saying he might not play in one of the Wales games because of it.

Good to see some on here showed a modicum of respect for the lad after his father passed away.
Such a shame to see the experts back to writing him off after a brief mourning respite.
Nobody here knows how good the lad can become, let's give him a bloody chance though, the negativity in here is unfounded.
If pep bought him for 15 mill Ed would be slated for missing out.
Give your heads a wobble and let's see some positivity around an exciting young prospect

I have mixed feelings about this deal. The Pros and cons of signing him up are pretty much even in my books

Lets start from the cons. His stats are hardly impressive and his technique seems limited for an EPL winger. However, blistering pace can paper alot of cracks and if you add that to workrate then he can be quite a valuable player if used correctly. Having said that I do wonder why we're signing a winger like him, who lets face it, is hardly a world beater when we've already got Gomes and Chong in that category. The latter might not have the experience James does but they are certainly more talented.

So I have mixed feelings about this deal.

I feel very positive about this. I am Welsh so I admit to a tiny bit of bias but I think people are getting very wrapped up in the fact that a 21 year old Championship player doesn't look like Ronaldo.

Giggs is a fan and feels he is good enough for United and I trust his opinion more than most of the posters on here. By all accounts he had a decent first half of last season and then kicked on after Christmas and was pretty sensational. I know the YouTube clips don't paint a complete picture but he clearly could have had a lot more assists if he was playing with PL quality forwards and he clearly does have more to him than mere pace although obviously that is the thing that stands out most about him.

The main reason I am more than happy to chuck 15 million at Dan though is the game against Man City. He managed to unsettle the Man City backline more in the space of a few minutes than our entire team managed over 2 full games last season so consider me sold.

as usual with United "close to deal" means waiting until 20 minutes before the new season starts...

I would assume the hold up here is due to giving the lad some time to mourn the passing of his father, which only happened last week. From all reports, he wants the move and Swansea and United had been working to come to a fee when that happened.

It is sort of weird that everyone seems to rate this kid but, judging by the thread on the Football Forum no one seems to rate Jack Grealish.

He’s just lost his father. I guess you don’t know what that’s like for a young person.

I do and apart from all the support I had to give my mum, I couldn’t concentrate on my job so took some time out.

Give the lad a break eh?

Grealish has had quite a bit more time to develop but doesn’t appear to have kicked on.
Watched him closely in the play off final and his decision making was very poor as was his whole game. I can see why he’d be dismissed as a top flight player

Is it? From the posts I read, most rate Grealish but also think he is more suited as AM than as winger.

Grealish completely dominated the Championship while James was promising.

maybe it's just me and maybe I've just watched the wrong games, but I never really got the Grealish hype. Hasn't convinced me at all.

Why can we not wait for him to play a few games for us before writing him off? I am sure Majority of fans have never watched him play.

I must admit, I haven't seen any games which he has played. Therefore; I am giving him the benefit of doubt. He is 21.

Liverpool signed Roberston from the Championship, look at him now, probably the best LB in the league.

Fans complain when we sign a sanchez on 500k a week and does nothing. Can't win anymore with the fans. If we cannot give a prospect a chance, we really are in trouble.

He came back from injury and then went 10 games unbeaten. It wasn’t a coincidence.. he’s the Paul Merson of that league.

On what planet did Grealish dominate the championship? He has not really kicked on since becoming a regular for Villa and has played considerably more games than James in a different role and so the comparison is pointless.

You clearly haven’t been watching the league have you.

Robertson had two seasons in the PL before signing for Liverpool.

What’s your point? This wasn’t the concept of the conversation was it.

I didn’t say Grealish for Balon dor.

Not sure what your point was. You brought Grealish into a discussion about Daniel James despite them playing different positions and despite the fact Grealish has 160 first team appearances and so is clearly at a totally different place in his development. I have not watched every one of his games but I have certainly seen enough of Grealish to know that he did not dominate the Championship, he was good but not spectacular and will probably be a decent PL midfielder but nothing more.
