2nd in league, massive trouble, hope we don’t get relegated
Nowhere near a title by March but I’m glad that suddenly become not terrible for United. We’re 2nd because everyone else have been shocking too, go and celebrate. You probably were saying the same stuff during that Jose season “but 2nd”.

He gets praised on here by performing the most basic of functions required from a footballer. I really can't imagine anyone truly believes he's good enough.

You won’t find me defending Rashford at the moment either.

the percentage cross was the only ball that was on by the time James got it forward. If he’d tried to slip it back to Rashford it would have been covered. If he passed it back it would have been just more of the same. We need urgency and for the forwards to take a few risks for each other

Not true we are second because we deserve to be second
And it became not terrible the moment Ferguson retired, not sure if you’re up to date with our more recent league finishes
In fact it was not terrible when Ferguson was the manager

Whipping a ball into the box when you can see there is nobody in the box is not a great ball. It’s a cop out, in truth.

When he runs with the ball he is fully well aware he has no idea what to do with it and it shows.
It's the attacker's jobs to get into those positions. Mental that's he's getting stick for brilliant crosses.

Fecking up the counter warrants criticism. Playing great passes doesn't.

Yes we deserve to be 2nd because we’ve been less shocking than the other so far but our game leaves a lot to be desired, like a lot considering the investment made by this manger.

If I'm being brutally honest I think he looks out of his depth in the PL. His technique actually isn't that bad, his crosses usually have good whip and dip on them. Mentally, he carries himself like someone who knows he doesn't belong there, looking for the safe option, never taking his man on, when he does shoot they're weak, almost apologetic efforts at the goal.

0 shots 0 key passes. Retained possession well. 1 successful tackle out of 4 attempts. 0 interceptions. Booked late on. Wasted one chance to counter with a poor pass to Fernandes. The standard cross that goes across the face of the goal with no-one making a run into the central zone near the goal; surely our attackers should know where the ball is going by now. There doesn't appear to be much understanding between James and Wan-Bissaka in the final third.

The space was there for Dan to exploit in the final 30 mins. Unfortunately he wasn't able to. Prior to that, he was barely involved.

There are matches in which Dan James' work-rate is an asset and then there are games in which his lack of technical ability, creativity and understanding with his team-mates are an issue.

Had to rip up the previous 2 managers plans and start again

he’s doing just dandy, can’t help having to pay top dollar when every one knows the dire state we were in

team plays well gets 3 points and pushes a team threatening to close the gap back and you get whinge bags harping on about the small things

99% of teams are having a hard time at the minute so credit where credit it due

must be shit to be so negative

I guess it comes down to why he is getting picked in games. I do wonder if its because if its a game where we are going to press higher and harder than other games he does a decent job of applying pressure, shutting down opposition defenders and squeezing defenders space. Thats all well and good but I would prefer attacking wide players to be picked because the opposition have trouble with defending against him. So far he doesnt seem to cause opposition much trouble when he has the ball.

I’m fairly sure Rashford had no shots on target and no key passes and offered nothing in the press or defensive phase either. There could be an argument for having another grafter/creator on Rasfords side and a proper centre forward we would probably score more and end up defending and pressing better.

Come on. There was one cross where he looked up, saw nobody was in there, and still proceeded to whip in it (quite nicely, too). That doesn’t really merit praise.

I don’t mind having James around the squad but his lack of self belief is worrying.

He was really rubbish in the 1st half.

He improved in the 2nd half but the problem remains, his absolute best which we rarely see is far from good enough.

I thought he was ok today. Apart from the pass which he fecked up he barely lost possession and was pretty tidy on it.

He’s trying to create team moves whereas Bruno Rashford Greenwood etc all look like they are trying to do it all themselves every time they get the ball in a dangerous position. It’s like his teammates are suprised someone actually passed when they had even a sight at goal themselves.

Thought he was decent. Always looks a threat and great work rate. Wish he walled try and get to the by line a bit more... final ball lets him down.

Those saying this lad was good are crazy, he's is awful.

Honestly the guys is absolutely garbage.

Good game was always a threat did well defensively as well and some excellent crosses if Cavani had been on he would have had a couple of assists

Mental to call him garbage.
He actually carried the ball forward quite well at times, his final ball let him down.
Never stopped running, pressing, tracking.

Was 20 times more useful than Rashford today.

I don't like that he got 90 minutes, sends out signals that his performance was acceptable or even good, which I don't think it was. He is good in certain games, against Leeds, against City, where there is space. How he lasted 90 here I don't know. How he fecked that counterattack was just so, so, poor. Ole needs to be more ruthless and send out signals, set standards.

James summed up perfectly in that 5 second period where he won the ball off a sloppy touch, charged forward only to choose the wrong time to pass and do it inaccurately also.

his work rate is appreciated but you need more than that especially against deep lying defences.

if he wasn’t so weak I’d try him at right back, think his skill set suits that a lot more offensively at least

Can't really dribble, create good chances and doesn't get involved in the play much. I don't see a future for him really, I think this a level too high for him.

He’s starting to figure out what to do with his first touch to overcome his tiny size. I can’t believe this kid gets to play at a premier league level while he figures out one of the most foundational skills required at top levels.

It doesn’t help he’s as thick as a brick with absolutely no creative awareness

Not sure how he lasted 90 minutes. The only time he wasn’t invisible was when he was fecking up attacks.

I think the stick he gets is harsh... Yeah he isn't the best but every single game he puts one or two excellent crosses in and nobody makes a move or even tries to get to them.
He put 2 in between the GK and the defence in the 1st 10 mins of the 2nd half , nobody took a chance and ran in . Both times Bruno stopped and waited for the pull back. This is where we miss Cavani

Decent, but his limitations were on full display. I’m ok with James being on the squad but I would like to see him grow a little more quickly into the role.

On the contrary he needs to get his head up first and check where the players are.

it’s all well and good smashing it across the box but if they’re all lined up on the edge of the box for an easy shot and he doesn’t pass to them it’s pointless.

a few times he went with that option and missed the simple pass.

I do agree our forwards should be gambling into the box more but we’ve been awful at crossing for ages I think they’ve forgotten how.

As evidenced by barely playing him until everyone else was injured
Why would he have ? A manager can love a player without being stupid about using him. James is a good squad option for Ole. If James ever leaves it will be because he will wanna play more, not because Ole wants to get rid of him.
There is no middle ground for caftards.

Imagine this guy had some ability (dribbling, passing/crossing & decision making), with his tireless running and pace he would be close to world class level!!!!

messed a simple pass to Bruno on the counter!!!

But at least he has his value of pressing and chasing oppo players, at least he isn't a passenger.

He was decent, had some good moments but God, he had some very very serious issue with his decision making. Like the 3 against 2 counter attack in the 2nd half, it took him like forever to pass to Bruno, and the pass was really bad it killed the whole counter attack. I had no idea what he was thinking. He thought he is Messi and could dribble the two defenders in front of him? or he is such a marvelous passer that he could pass to Greenwood? It was so obvious the right decision was just pass the fecking ball to Bruno then run into the channel, no idea why it took him 2-3 seconds just to realise that.

He doesn't have the skill to use his pace properly.

Wanted to comment on the ludicrous suggestion to bring Amad on and play James right back. James is pretty poor at defending, even though he tracks back all the time. I've seem him make some awful tackles, typical of forwards. AWB was bad in the first half, but I'd rather have Tuanzebe at RB than James. AWB recovered in the second half, so I'm glad Ole left him on.

I'm hoping Amad and Pellistri can displace him in the squad next season. James really isn't good enough.

Unfortunately he's not good enough and even worse I think he knows it.

Spent the first 60 mins just playing it backwards as soon as he could. So it's no wonder on that break towards the end he got it all wrong. He'd barely touched the ball. Don't like saying it but yesterday he hid a little.

As somebody with zero pace it's frustrating to watch a player with incredible pace not use it. Needs to be a bit more daring and have a go.

Biggest issue I see with James is more about his preference than ability. He's good at running down the channel and looking to put a cross. It's just that none of our forwards play like off the shoulder of the last defender looking to get on the end of one (bar perhaps Cavani).

Was decent again. He has been making way more good decisions, quick passes and good runs since coming back in, which is great.
He did a lovely turn on the ball yesterday to beat his man in the second half and then was running straight at their defense.
Hope he keeps it up.
