In the right circumstances he can be a real weapon. With hindsight I wonder if he could've helped to break the lines against City a week ago.

Would like to see him play with cavani against Everton, someone who knows how to play the traditional centre forward role could really benefit from him flashing balls across the box like he did many times last year to an empty box

Think he should be converted into a centre forward. Everytime I watch him I think of Michael Owen. Not on the same level, but similar physical attributes.

That yellow for "diving" was ridiculous. I remember last year he got a similar one vs Wolves (maybe). Gets kicked all over the place and gets booked for diving when he has the nerve to go down.

Maybe the best game I've seen him play for us today, buzzing all over the place.
I can't believe Leeds came to OT and played such an open game like that, clearly the blueprint is to sit off and frustrate us.
No complaints here though, I think after McTominay and Bruno he was easily our best player, happy for the lad
To be fair to them and Bielsa, after going 2:0 down in 3 minutes, they didn't have a lot of options but to go for it. (I'm not saying they would've managed the game differently if they didn't concede)

No.. He has no striker's brain nor instinct. His worst performance is when he was a CF against Chelsea in FA cup semi, just running around like U16 football game. His goal conversion rate is also terrible. We can't have a CF who need 20+ chances to score a goal, it would be a huge handicap on the team. He should be converted into a Wing Back, in a traditional 3-5-2 formation.

Indeed defenders aren’t allowed to tackle with their arms. Very harsh booking, VAR should have rescinded it, there was physical contact that caused him to fall, not worthy of a penalty but certainty enough to knock him off balance.

Just saw that Ole criticised the ref afterwards. Finally. Happy about that. He needs to be protected and his pace needs to be understood by refs.

First PL goal since August 2019, sheesh. Decent enough game. Still don't think he's good enough, unfortunately.

OK, time for me to eat my slice of humble pie! I was wrong about him before the match and Ole. Great decision to pick him, he did really well and i'm pleased he scored. Lets hope he can kick on from here because his pace can be a real asset

I would sooner see him as a right Wingback. Let him sprint up and down the wing and use that energy.

Not good enough to be a squad player? Of course he is. He’s never going to be playing every game, but is versatile and his pace is a potent weapon to use later on in games.

Great on games like this where there is space to run in behind.

Still needs to work on technique

Will always rather a Greenwood in his place but he had one of his best games yesterday. Against the right opposition he is a real threat. Would like to see him improve on his positioning and passing....plenty of room for improvement. May end up being a very useful squad player.

I think really we all know footballing ability he’s probably nowhere near the rest of the forward players. In games where we are going to have slower build up and need to work our way through he’s probably not the best option.

However yesterday it was a joy to watch him. Give him space and that’s what he can do, Problem is we probably won’t have many games like yesterday where a team is willing to let you do that.

I really liked the celebration and the moment between he and Mata and I think earlier in the game Bruno picked him out and gave him a well done due to his interception he made in the build up to the Bruno goal.

Have to disagree. His level has generally been extremely underwhelming, so no, I don't think he's good enough to be a squad player. Yesterday was an anomaly performance from him as he's usually pretty ineffective. If he can put in performances similar to yesterday on a consistent basis when he gets a chance, then he can be an alright option.

I'm not going to get carried away by one performance, unfortunately. He has a lot to do and huge improvements to make if he is to play a significant role here.

When I saw the starting XI and saw James I was delighted, but I didn’t think he’d play as well as he did. He started off a bit scruffy but grew into the game brilliantly. He took responsibility and made good decisions with ball.

We all knew about his pace, but there was one run when he went full throttle for about 60 yards...astonishing pace. A player from a previous era Daniel should hunt down videos of us Marc Overnars. James will never be on the level of Overmars, but he should try to emulate him and develop quickness in short paces as well as beating defenders with all out pace.

What? besides being british and have around the same height they're nothing similar.

Short in height, two arms and two legs and is white...anything else?
In football terms the only thing they have in common is pace and a lot more is required to be a centre forward.

You can sort of see why Bielsa would want him at Leeds. Never stops running and pressing so if we want to play that kind of tactic he's a good fit. Good choice to play him against Leeds I think.

If he does emulate Overmars then He will be on the same or higher level than him and that would be great for us.

You'd have to fancy him having joy as well against Everton seeing as they have no fit full backs at the moment and are playing Holgate and Godfrey on the flanks.

Easy to forget how much of an impact he had before Christmas last year given his atrocious form from January onwards, he was so direct and providing goals and assists. If he can rediscover that simplicity to his game then it could be a real bonus to us in such a busy period. Having said that, Leeds was the perfect opponent for him.. Still has glaring weaknesses in his game.

When Dan James reaches his potential he will still not even be able to lace Owens boots never mind being anything like his playing style.

Just thinking, wow Owen was incredible at his peak.

Lad got a little fillip for his confidence the other night. Hope he can build on it, even if it means finishing his season on loan.

Owen was lethal!
It was a shame that injuries got to him early in his career.

Hopefully a couple of dumb clubs were looking at our game yesterday and they be willing to pay for him. Love his attitute and dedication but not nearly enough talent to be in a club like ours.

It was a perfect game for him and im still amazed how naive Leeds were (no other team in this league will grant James that much space!) considering his threat on the break but you could see he's miles away from the other attackers technique wise. Good first touch for his goal though

He's got enough attributes and talent to be a rotational player here. Entirely up to him whether he can put it together consistently to make an impact. Far too often he'll make the wrong decision and end up wasting moments.

If he can perform on the same level on a consistent basis he will be a starter, not a squad option.

James is a speedy roaming attacking player and is still developing his style and abilities. I'm confident he will get games and he has a good chance of making it at United if he works hard, which it appears that he does.

With Pellistri and Diallo arriving he needs to provide something else to ensure there is a space in the 25 for him. But that's a good problem to have for Ole.

The main issue for me is there aren't enough teams in the Premier league where his main attribute can be utilised.

What we going to do, keep him on the books for the two Leeds games every season.

I'd keep him as a squad option for games like that, and for keeping defences pinned back late in tougher matches. Hard to see what else he can bring.

I like him but hes obviously miles off our other attackers in every way. I doubt he will be here long.

In games where we play on the counter, where he has space to attack, he is extremely useful. However the majority of games we play against defences who sit back and he doesn't have enough about him to help break those defences down. If he can add one or two more strong assets to his game he'll be a good PL player, either somewhere else or potentially as a squad player at United.

You can see why Bielsea wanted him though, he'd be ideal in their setup.

Best to use him as an impact sub from now on. We should have subbed him on against WBA for example instead of mata.

when we are leading, playing more defensively and need to close out the last few minutes he’s ideal.

I think a loan to Leeds wouldn’t be the worst idea in the world, he’s learn a lot from Bielsa in how to position himself and when to press properly.

he’s still a bit too lightweight and his control in tight spaces will always make him turn the ball over too often, but his work rate in tight matches like that is very helpful.

Solid performance but now lots of people overreact. Just like it was with Lingard for years. 5 bad games, one good and all of sudden he is useful player.

What i've noticed with James, during his period of poor form - he looked like he had no confidence whatsoever. That coupled with sporadic minutes here and there and playing RW mostly when it's clear he;s better off the left done him no favours.

What James has is excellent desire and workrate. I've read many articles/columns and been around a lot of Swansea fans who say he is level headed and only wants to learn and develop. He's clearly a good lad who applies himself well and wants to get better. He's the perfect kind of young character this club needs.

I disagree regarding a loan - he needs to stay here and develop. A loan would set him back, not help him.

He would be a decent signing for leeds, but they are such a specialist team that learning all that from Biesla then coming into a completely different style and system would set him back. Not many teams play the way Leeds do - it's pretty kamikaze.

He had a wonderful game against Leeds and what impressed me most was how simple he kept it. Running with the ball, driving forward will always cause problems.

All forward players have a tendency to over play these days - James needs to do the basics well and he'll be around our 1st team for sure. He'll only get better as well. Landed for him.

Bar McTom, he was the highlight of the game for us

Not true at all.

Not one true football fan bought that Lingard was a useful player. Ever

Even in this game, he served a purpose tactically more than anything else before the goal. If we're being pedantic and really looked at his whole game especially from an attacking perspective, all his usual flaws were on display. He lost the ball a lot just from kicking it far and trying to catch it, and his decision making left a lot to be desired. He still needs to learn not to keep his head down on most attacks and look for his options before running into traffic and losing the ball.

DJ is good but still don´t think he´s a United player, he needs to develop further by playing more games than he does now. Get better at finishing, better dribbling etc. Would do him a world of good if he left on loan to Leeds for a season or two, then came back and could be a great squad palyer.

I know he had a good one against Leeds but you know there will be a lot of dull games when he´s inefective, lose the ball a lot and do nothing. I think Ryan Fraser is his potential, I don´t think he´s there even now. I know that right now we would be short of options there but perhaps if Diallo or Pellistri are given chance, they can be not worse than James as squadies with limited time but won´t suffer form less playing time which DJ needs in the stage of his career now.

You see how big impact say Januzaj had even before he physically developped so I wouldn´t be too shy to throw the players in, just need to give them a go, in Europa or in other minor games..

You're sort of contracting yourself.

You say stay here and develop yet he's played once in like 2 months, he would develop a lot more playing regularly at leeds than he will sitting on the bench for us. Not playing regularly will set him back a lot more.

They play a much more open style which will give him more chances to use the space provided, he doesn't get that at United.

Yes it was a nice one off performance but I don't think that is what we can expect if he plays at home to Wolves for instance.
