Dan Brown's suave symbologist Robert Langdon, star of the international phenomenon The Da Vinci Code, is set for a return to the literary stage in a new thriller this autumn.

The long-awaited novel – one of the most anticipated in recent publishing history - will be called The Lost Symbol, and will take place over a 12-hour period. No more details were given about its content, but persistent rumours have suggested it will be set in Washington DC and will focus on freemasonry. It will be published on 15 September with an initial print run of 6.5 million copies – the largest first printing in publisher Random House's history.

"This novel has been a strange and wonderful journey," said Brown. "Weaving five years of research into the story's 12-hour timeframe was an exhilarating challenge. Robert Langdon's life clearly moves a lot faster than mine."

Fans of Brown's rapid-paced, page-turning novels kept The Da Vinci Code at the top of bestseller charts around the world for over a year when it was published in 2003. Today, it is the UK's bestselling adult paperback novel of all time – ahead of Brown's other titles Angels & Demons, Deception Point and Digital Fortress, which take second, third and fourth place.

Announcing publication plans for The Lost Symbol today, Brown's US publisher Sonny Mehta described it as "a brilliant and compelling thriller" which was "well worth the wait".

"Dan Brown's prodigious talent for storytelling, infused with history, codes and intrigue, is on full display in this new book," he said. "This is a great day for readers and booksellers."

Brown's longterm US editor, Jason Kaufman, promised that, as ever, in The Lost Symbol "nothing ever is as it first appears". Brown scandalised Catholics in The Da Vinci Code by having Langdon discover that Jesus fathered a child with Mary Magdalene.

A film of The Da Vinci Code was released in 2006, starring Tom Hanks as Robert Langdon. It will be followed up on 15 May this year with the film of Angels and Demons.

Looking forward to it, if it's half as good as the Da Vinci Code we're in for a great book.

True

I'm not really much of a reader but i've read and enjoyed all of Dan Browns books so i'll look forward to getting a copy of this one.

I'm also looking forward to the cinema release of Angels and Demons, which will hopefully be as good as the book!

I'm looking forward to the film version of Angels and Demons (which was better than The Da Vinci code and much better than his two other really shit books).

I'll probably get this but wait for the paperback.

I read Angels and Demons first and thought it was very good. Read The Da Vinci Code next and found it was basically the exact same thing and very predictable. Didn't read the other two. I might read the new one at some point.

I was going to post almost the same thing. I've read the other two also and they're a pile of shit. Xerox copies with names and places changed. And don't go anywhere near Digital Fortress.

Agree with this. He's better at the quasi-religious stuff than science.

He's not that bad. The Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons were both very good books and very enjoyable reads.

His other two weren't very good, admittedly.

I read a Dan Brown book for the first time the other night - Digital Fortress - I didn't think much of it. I'm sure The Da Vinci Code was better, though, but I have a policy of not reading hyped up books, so I wouldn't know.

Is there to be any continuation of characters from the previous two books, it wouldn't IMO do this one any harm.

Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons (Maybe a slightly better novel!) were both ace. Can't wait for this and shall buy it immediately.

What is even the point of that?

Immediately now or immediately when it is released?

I have contacts. Namely Mr Brown himself, so I'll just pager him for my free immediate copy. I can get you one too. £500.

I really do struggle with his writing style :/ it just outweighs any positives for me when reading his books.

Dan Brown's laughing at you all. How the feck he's gotten away with this for so long amazes me.

He's an intelligent bloke, and does touch on some interesting stuff. It's enough for me to read his books, even if I don't think he is particularly talented as an author.

I hate it when people say stuff like this. Dan Brown's flaws as an author don't just go away because AlwynP couldn't write a better book.

Indeed. The corollary of that argument makes all of our presences pretty futile on a site discussing players and teams we aren't in the same stratosphere as, ability-wise.

The Daily Mail published the first two chapters of the book today. Very good start and am looking forward to getting my hands on the book on Tuesday.
