Somewhere down the lane, a licky boom boom down
Probably didn't start because Watford play two lumps up top but I feel like he would have helped the team, especially in the 2nd goal.
My pick over Smalling every day of the week (except Thursday's if he needs a rest). You can't underestimate the passes he makes out of defence, and his calmness under pressure. Smalling is happy pass it to a throw in under the slightest sense of pressure but Blind will in most cases do something proactive. He made a shocking attempt to defend that De Bruyne goal, but he's mostly been error free and for me one of the first names on the team sheet.
Needs to start. If not in defence then in midfield. Especially if Basti is still exiled. Christmas may come early if Daley becomes the Rooney killer in this team and sits beside Fellaini to release Pogba at captain fantastic's expense.
It is understandable that he didnt start this match. But, problem is we didn't start anyone who can pass from the deep area or advanced area to control the match either.
@Footyislife you're right, that Smalling / Bailly partnership is much, much better. Sharp eye you've got there.
It's the same defensive midifeld Blind had in front of him so it's entirely comparable.Fellaini and Pogba being terrible at defensive positioning is too powerful. It wouldn't have mattered who the defensive pairing was. I don't get why Blind isn't used as a holding midfielder. He's smart, got great positioning, and can pass. If Blind played in front of Smalling/Bailly we'd have a more solid defense and better attack.
He's way too slow to play central midfield.....he's been badly exposed there......I think it was Dortmund in pre season where Jose gave him a chance in central midfield and he was shocking....but as a central defender he is way more reliable than Smalling albeit with a huge height disadvantageI'll admit I'm one of those who wanted Smalling and Bailly to play together, but having Blind at CB masked the issue that none of our midfielders know how to build an attack, especially Fellaini who is extremely limited in his skillset. Needs to come back into the side, at CB or preferably, CDM

Van Gaal bought him in the hope he'd be a Scholes type player who would dictate tempo from central mid where he had been excelling in the same position with Ajax. But I think Van Gaal was happy to keep him in defence when he realized he perhaps was not dynamic enough to keep up with the fast paced life in central midfield in the premier league....he's probably a much more solid left-back than Shaw on current form but perhaps Shaw has more potential...would be great if Mourinho can fit him in as he is a great playerIf we're going to sit deep like a bunch of kittens anyway, I don't think it will be that much of an issue. Less space for him to cover
He played almost every game last season and how often did he have a 'mare against any attacker?
Any time you mention Blind to an opposition fan you hear 'yeah but against quicker attackers...' etc.
It's a myth - the guy is one of the most reliable players we have.
He makes both Smalling and Bailly look better when he plays with them.
That isn't a coincidence.

Very true. And the team as a whole. I don't want it to become one of those things where he stays on the bench and load of us still rate him hugely but everyone else says we are romanticising it because he is no longer in the team. If he plays against Northampton but not Leicester I really won't be happy.
Very true.
I'll admit that I wasn't always a Blind fan but I've seen the error of my ways. He brings a certain level of intelligence to a team that hardly has any.He doesn't resort to hoofing it out like so many.He calms everyone around him too.Your namesake did well bringing him to the club.
It was stupid to bench him just for that one mistake against KDB... Every defender makes mistakes, even the best ones in the world. Shit management from Jose tbh
Every post I make lacks credibility immediately because of the username. And then secondarily because its usually gibberish.
The 2 goals against City was mostly down to him, no excuses for that.
I agree, he's far from perfect but he's a far better and far more gifted playee than most of our starting 11. Why not play him DM, by far our best option imo for that position. One in my opinion, that second one can happen and its hard to blame him entirely. We conceded more today against Watford than against City, I would say regardless of that/those mistakes he needs to be in the team.

Smalling's a comfortably better centre-back than Blind...
Whenever I see blind in the lineup particularly in big games, i worry. I would much prefer Smalling in there. I am not saying Smalling doesn't make mistakes, he does, but I just think he is a better defender. Blind is better attacking wise, but Smalling defends better.
As a pure defender, I think Smalling is better than him. Why is that hard to understand?.
I think Smalling's pace and power would have made us a bit harder to beat.
Well he had a brainfart for their first goal and played them onside for their the 2nd goal so...
We have a potential long term beastly CB partnership in Bailly and Smalling, dominant, physically imposing, and very quick. The sooner we attempt to build that partnership the better.
Smalling was injured so Blind started the first couple of games and played well so it was harsh to drop him. He also hinted Blind's experience and composure was helping Bailly settle.
I think long term we'll be better off with the better defender at centre back. Smalling alongside Bailly there will never be a lack of pace or physical dominance. The ceiling for that partnership I think is a lot higher than any other.
Exceptionally bad yesterday.
Jesus christ, bring Smalling back.
Really poor yesterday, has played well in many games and reads the game well most of the time but always looks as if could make an error at any time and is too slow.
Hopefully Smalling and Bailly will be our first choice partnership for future games
100% loss rate with our 'supposedly' best defensive partnership.
Sorry. Too good an oppurtunity.
