D. McDonnell - the Mirror: Jose will be sacked this weekend | BBC: Jose still has board backing

And rightly so. He put his neck on the line with this "exclusive", and will lose a lot of credibility if Jose isn't gone by tomorrow.

Totally, if he's found to be making this up he's got no defense.

Well, this guy reported that the club were in talks with LVG 12 days before Moyes was sacked. He was also the first to report that LVG was to be sacked regardless of the result of the FA Cup Final so it's not like he hasn't got a history of breaking stories. If Mourinho had been sacked today or tomorrow and then McDonnell said he knew about this possibly happening on Friday night but didn't report it, he'd get called a fraud in that case too.

Ask yourself, what would a journalist who is seemingly well regarded in the industry have to gain from making something like this up?
Giddy from being able to break a huge story.
Plus everyone knew LVG was gone after the West Ham game, its nothing but throwin shit to the wall.
If his big stories are from 3 years ago...I mean...

I don't disagree. But my original point is, he isn't 'a fraud'. He put his neck on the line with the story and is yet to be proved right or wrong.

If Jose is sacked soon, he was right all along.

What people fail to realize, is that McDonnell had nothing to gain by making up stuff before the game. Because every man and his dog could see that if we managed to beat Newcastle, it could blow up in his face. But he stuck his neck out and said Jose would be sacked "irrespective of the result". Absolutely suicidal to his rep if he was making it up.

I believe his source was legit, but the win and the show of support forced a stay of execution, in much the same way a 0-0 result against an out of form Chelsea in January 2016 kept LvG in a job as it looked like "We had turned a corner".

Ed is keen to stretch this as long as possible to avoid a midseason change. But afraid of the backlash from the likes of Gary Neville as well, strange though it may be for a CEO. That's literally the only reason Jose's in charge.

The Daily Mirror has form for making up back pages, Piers Morgan said he to sack a journalist in the 90s for running a story that Ince was going to Arsenal. When Arsenal phoned Morgan up to complain he looked into it, the reporter said his source was David Dein - Morgan told him to come into his office, where Dein a friend of his waiting - he confirmed that he had never spoken to a reporter about this story, reporter admitted what had happened and was promptly dismissed on the spot.

Or the club was telling the truth when it said the report was nonsense.

back pages today claim it would cost £29m to sack Jose. Previous reports said 12-20million. Who do you believe

What do people understand by senior club official other than someone above Jose in the club hierarchy? Would someone who works under the manager be classified as a "senior club source"? I don't think so. Who is above the manager in the club other than the board and the CEO, no one..

All of this on the assumption that the journalist isn't completely lying and throwing his career out the window of course.
Just because someone isn't Mourinho's boss doesn't mean they're not a senior club source. The board and CEO(not actually Woodward's title) aren't the only people making decisions at the club.

Amazing that some find it so hard to believe a journalist at the daily mirror of all papers might have made something up?

I mean when did people start believing these guys always print well researched stories?

£29m is likely the amount to pay out his remaining contract (just a little bit less than 2 years) but I think the usual agreement when sacking someone is to pay for the remainder of the season (if sacked early) so I would guess it would be around £15m.

Never heard this story before and just googled it, it's from Piers Morgan's own book and makes him look an even bigger douche than normal. He was getting fed up off unfounded transfer "exclusives", so in his own words decided to "stich up" one of his journalists (Bob Blair) by getting the Mirror's own sports editor to phone up said journalist claiming to be in Milan where Dein had just signed Ince and then when the journalist gave the story to Piers he phoned Dein who denied the story. I wouldn't be suprised if this type of behaviour is why somebody decided to give him them fake photo's.

The piece this morning also includes the claim that Mourinho's compensation drastically reduces if he fails to get us in to the top 4...

April/May sacking more likely.

Well yes, we definitely have this clause in the contract. However even then it would probably still be about £5m-8m.

IIRC this was broken by a Dutch paper way before any English journalism talked about it.

People are trying to give him too much credibility like what they did with Castles before.

I'm not saying you're wrong but I don't understand the logic, if they wanted rid of Mourinho but felt it would be cheaper if we fail to qualify for the Champions League wouldn't the money saved on his compensation be significantly less then the TV rights and potential fall in stock price?

Because there can be consequences like having your pitch pass revoked.

Jose walks or gets sacked if/when we can’t mathematically finish in the top four, whatever comes first I believe it’ll happen before the season ends.

Scratching and clawing a victory at home against an utter tripe side who hadn’t won a game all season shouldn’t change anything. There’s a lot of things wrong at the club right now and the manager is just part of that. I’m not expecting a change of manager to instantly elevate us to title contenders, it’ll just be the start of a whole new ‘process’

I agree. But that didn't seem to matter with regards to Moyes or Van Gaal.

I suppose the question they'll be asking is whether or not there's someone out there who can start immediately and get us a top 4 place. If the answer to that question is "no", then sticking with Mourinho until it's cheap to sack him is the choice they're likely to make.

Morgan sacked someone for dishonesty? That's rich.

This bastard journalist and the mirror should be banished from this forum. Got happy for a bit on friday night thinking Moyesinho would be shown the door and then feck all happens. Journalists who make up shit like this to get attention are a disgrace to society.

The £29m figure sounds about right. He has 18 months that left on his contract and I'm sure would have lots of loyalty bonuses he will demand if he's sacked.
Sacking him now will definitely cost us £20m+

Sunday supplement this morning. Ashton asked northcroft about journalistic responsibilities before spreading rumours. Got the usual protecting sources reply. Bunch of cnuts the lot of them!

Mourinho in.

There's no manager that is as successful as him, that we could replace with. Don't say Zidane because that would be a massive risk.

I wish I could go into ‘On Holiday’ mode til mid May like in Football Manager so I could write this season off, by then we’d know where we stood in regards to Champions League/top four and could just end this entire saga.

Thing is, the Mirror was already backtracking (or claiming United were...) BEFORE the match.

I don't think McDonnell invented it, though.

It's just a matter of time, wait until Chelsea and City away ...

If we risk it until we're out of the Champions League, we'll be in trouble next summer to attract world class players without Europe and that would be a stupid move.

City, Chelsea, LFC, Arsenal already look highly likely to get top 4.

Thought we have top players and the next manager will just get more out of the current ones? Doesn’t matter if we can sign players or not then right?

Deadline.
Can we stop believe in the amazing Mirror from now on.. it's not the first time.

Tbf, I'm impressed they're making a strong brave prediction this time, but then again is it that hard to make that. A (controversial) manager in a top team struggling to get results, with that bad run of results may likely get another draw or loss against this small team, that would justified his sacking, approaching the 2 weeks (international football) break which is enough times for a new manager or interim manager to settle everything up in better order. The public hype/reputation about him helps justified it even further.

EDIT: Arguments can be made the source is legit, but then publicizing it seems to do incite the opposite.

Some reports the club have banned McDonnell. I hope they're true.

Does not help if we go with a successful manager if he does not believe in attack minded football. I rather want a manager with a clear attacking philosophy where the front three can attack freely. We saw against Newcastle what our players can do when they really attack.

We are MANCHESTER FECKING UNITED we are not supposed to defend with 11 players against Wolves/West Ham etc.

It is time the board focus on what the team are supposed to do on the field and that is to entertain at the Theatre of dreams not focusing on new sponsors.
