I saw the media reports on the Glazer's looking to purchase Ronaldo from Juventus....and I hope it's not true.

Buying a past his prime 36 year old isn't really building a team for the future, but I wouldn't put it pass the Glazer's...they probably think they could repeat the success they had with Tom Brady, as well as playing on fan nostalgia for the glory days.

The ‘past is’ Ronaldo has scored 81 goals in the last 3 seasons (21, 29, 31), averaging at 27 per season. Anyone in our squad (apart from Bruno) getting anywhere near those figures?

I tend to agree with you but if it were part of an actual transfer strategy where a centre forward is lined up for next summer with sancho, a dm and cb coming this summer then i don't see how is presence would be a bad thing. Cavani leaving next summer too so 2 years of Ronaldo would work once it wasn't a week in week out thing. The man is still a goal machine

Well let's look shall we. It is an inferior league, look at what Lukaku is doing out there.

Ronaldo earns €29mil a year AFTER tax. €650,000 a week. Utd arent gonna go anywhere near that. Plus have to pay a transfer fee. Also allegri is back at Juventus and Juventus have qualified for CL for next season. Any reports of him potentially coming to utd or utd being interested are just BS.

Like utd would go near that deal in a covid environment. Laughable.

Yeah like you say the figures are far too eye watering for Utd to get involved

I can see him coming back next year as a free agent when Pogba's gone but it's hard to imagine Rashford doing his usual terrible dribbles and not being booted off the pitch by Ronaldo.

Would be something to look forward to then. The amount of sulking rashford does on the pitch is pathetic.

We've been rebuilding for the past 7 years and have achieved nothing. We need to win now.

Indeed. But unless we have 2-3 providers, Ronaldo will end up at PSG or Portugal for his last few years, in my opinion.

Or he sorts his US problems and enjoys a footballing holiday in the US.

Its not just that, its the mentality that comes along with him. The type of player that pushes those around him to do better.

It should have happened when he left Madrid but Mourinho is a bitch. Now's a great time to seek out two season and get him to push players like Rashford to the next level.

Agreed. He's one of the best players in the world and would be fantastic here for a couple of years. Cavani, Ronaldo, Bruno would be a pretty formidable set of problems for opposing managers to deal with.

I agree with you, if you can bring Ronaldo in without digging into the transfer budget, but my main problem with signing Ronaldo is that United have holes they need to fill elsewhere, so if you blow your budget on Ronaldo....than you still have a CB, CDM, & RW problem....and as stated we still have Cavani for a year.

Juventus has shown that Ronaldo can no longer win you major silverware alone, you need solid team behind him, and La Liga...is a much slower paced league.

but as you say...If you can bring him in without digging into the summer's transfer budget, than I'd be for it to.

It helps having a strong foundation which we do. Juventus have benefited from everybody else in serie a being shit for a long time and got found out when the rest of the league caught up.

Signing him will only improve Rashford and Greenwood hugely, and he is still goal scoring machine.

If Ronaldo is willing to take a pay cut, I will take him back with open arm. Ronaldo has business everywhere, no clubs will be paying top wages for him. Frankly speaking, his brand and sponsor are earning top dollars. If Ronaldo wants to come back and help this club for the next 2-3 years that would be fantastic. That's mean Rashford would be rotating with him on the left wing, it helps to help Rashford kick on to the next level.

Look at it another way, who would you rather have in the squad for the next season - Ronaldo or Pogba? No question for me.

No - please let’s not go crazy with nostalgia. His wages are 50 percent more than what we’re paying DDG. And what we are paying DDG is 100 percent more than what we should be paying him.

Well he's a better goal scorer than anyone we have at the moment. Isn't that enough?

We've been rebuilding for the past 7 years and have achieved nothing. We need to win now.

No, we haven't. We've been rebuilding for two years. That's "rebuilding" as in "making a sustained effort to construct a team good enough to contend for PL titles for several seasons ahead".

What we were doing before that is exactly what this would amount to, ie, throwing big money at individual players in the hope that'll somehow make us contenders right now. And as you say, we've achieved nothing with that approach. On the other hand it looks like we may achieve something with the rebuild we have so belatedly embarked upon, so this is no time for the club to lose its head and revert to old, miserable practices.

The measure of any big investment made now isn't just the impact on next season, but where it leaves us 2, 3, 4 seasons ahead. In that light, this would obviously not be a good investment.

He’s 36 and called us slave drivers to get a move away in his prime. Now no-one else will have him we’re supposed to take him back like that didn’t happen?

You would think this was painfully obvious wouldn’t you.

At the end of the day, if we aren’t getting Haaland or Kane then who is available short term that scores at the rate of Ronaldo ffs.

1-2 years of his goals and experience would be brilliant for us. Especially if we can strengthen the other areas of the squad.

We have lots of energy and pace in the team already, a number 9 with his positioning and finishing ability provides every bit of what we’ve enjoyed from Cavani this season and more.

Can we do this deal and still sort out the other glaring issues? Or do the Glazers sign Ronaldo and then we do some deadline day bargain hunting leading to more future deadwood.

Like a lot of things, it's only "painfully obvious" if you look at it narrowly and try not to think about it too hard.

There's a pretty well-established argument that Ronaldo has made Juventus a worse team, despite his profligate scoring. They've gone from being a team with good balance and organisation and lots of goal contributions from a large number of players, to being one focussed on supplying Ronaldo with scoring chances. The net result have been that they've been markedly less good the past two seasons than they were before CR arrived. He's not a player who makes his teammates better, he's not a player who makes the collective better, and he's not a player who's focussed on team rather than individual results. It's hard to imagine him fitting into the sort of quick passing game we have offensively - he has fittingly been called a "ball vortex". Once you give him the ball, he generally keeps it, until he loses it or shoots. He puts up goals, but what good is that when as a result his teammates score much less? His team is worse, not better. You can't just look at his goals stats and ignore everything else.

In addition to the one posted above, there's no shortage of available comment and analysis making this point better than I am. For example:

Has Cristiano Ronaldo Made Juventus Worse? A Critique of the Portuguese Professional Footballer Who Plays as a Forward for the Serie A Club – The Science Survey

He's obviously a great player, but he is exactly what the club should not be doing at this point. I don't want him in the team, flat out. Even if he didn't cost a penny.
