As much as it annoyed me at the time I always understood that Real were the team he supported as a boy and it was a dream he was very vocal about, even in his early days. I guess maybe people took comfort in the fact that United were his English team and that he wouldn't play for another PL side. Now that looks like it's not true anymore.
As other people have said too, his real affection seemed to be towards SAF although he did seem genuinely touched by the reception he got here in the Champions league game in 2013.
