Cristiano Ronaldo | Real confirm deal

True that. But I won't worry about our commercial department at all, since I am sure Woodward and co. know exactly how to get the most out of any commercial deals. Let's see what happens with the Ronaldo deal - find it strange that we are not mentioned at all.
We've been mentioned, but we're likely not interested since we have Lukaku for the striker position and a ton of players for the left-wing position. Neither does it make sense for us squad-wise as our problem-areas (or near-future problem-areas) are left-back, right-back (potentially solved with Dalot), right-wing (unless we finally play Sanchez there) & CB.
We need 2-4 top class players in other positions than the ones Ronaldo plays, it's only for the romanticism and his outspoken unhappiness that we're mentioned at all.

Obviously going by my perspective.

It also has a bit to do with the idea that there are limitations to our commercial appeal that are to a degree already being realized with the likes of Pogba and others. Ronaldo, through his past is also already somewhat baked into our brand.

Since when Ronaldo plays as a left winger these days ? He has been a second striker for Madrid for years now.
That's because they have Marcelo who can take the whole left for himself. And they have Benzema to play the supportive role for Ronaldo. We have Ashley Young & chronically unfit Shaw.

How is it weird that a team with Lukaku, Alexis, Rashford and Martial it's not all over the place to sign a 33 y/o player for 100M and add another huge payroll to their finances.

What would be the situation there, play Lukaku and Ronaldo together? Sell Martial and Rashford? Bench Lukaku or Ronaldo?. I don't get why United should be behind him, Ronaldo doesn't solve the defensive problems or the creativity department, if we were talking about a solid team that lacked level at the striker position (like Juve) then it's reasonable, but when you have a great striker and 2 great prospects with the rest of the squad still not working at top level, hardly.

He traditionally plays left-wing and even as second striker drifts over to the left. Plus under Mourinho we mainly play 4-2-3-1 and 4-3-3, Ronaldo would take a starting place from one of those players which is what many have been at Sanchez for doing to Martial and Rashford.

Only way I can see us playing if Ronaldo returns is in a diamond/41212 or a 352. I can see Lukaku providing plenty of crosses from the right for Ronaldo to score from, since I think that he is smart enough to drift wide when needed and create the space/draw defenders out of position. For now, when Big Rom goes wide, we seldom have a good option in the box for him to cross to.

All these are correct and they have built the team to squeeze the best out of Ronaldo's clinical finishing. Nothing disagreeing with my initial point that Ronaldo doesn't have the ability anymore to get the ball on the left, dribble past players one after another and score. He adopted his game to a striker like position to keep himself at the top and Madrid adopted to him too.

Just shows how shortsighted Juventus are tbh. Wanting to win the league and CL immediately unlike us who are looking 3-5 years down the line.

Anyone can look 3-5 years down the line. And if Juventus sign Ronaldo and win the CL this season I've no doubt they'll attract all the young players they could want

Ahh, so you're also in the don't-sign-him camp. Then we're all good.
Jumped the gun when I first read your response, my bad.

But for the sake of argument, he does play as a left-forward at Portugal from what I saw in the world cup. :)

@K2K you're ignoring the contezt of the deal. Juventus own licensing rights, which means they make money on every shirt sold, unlike clubs like united who are paid a fixed amount by adidas. There are probably more fans of cristiano ronaldo in the world than juventus. The market pool will be bigger, which means they'd likely stand to sell significantly more shirts than last season.

Yes it's a myth that shirt sales alone could pay the investment, but in this specific case it could play a not insignificant role in it. Of course shirt sales isn't how juventus plan to pay for it, as you stated, it's mostly sponsorships and increase in value of the brand

Aaah, people who went to Rome on holidays

Try actually living there for a prolonged period of time

yes that is true, but one was talking about the city attractiveness and interest. No doubt Milan is easier to work in(also because is not even half the size of Rome) but as a destination it is not even in the same league as Rome sorry :D

I was too. But after having thought about it I realised that we need to spend our transfer budget elsewhere. We will become a better all around team for it. If can sign LB and RW and a back up striker I won't care what other teams do. I'll be over the moon with our transfer business.
This.
Our club has been accused of buying players to sell shirts and for their commercial appeal and not because they improve our team or fit our style if play. That is exactly what would have happened if we signed Ronaldo. We have shown great maturity to stay away from this deal which has enormous commercial potential

He's a great player and I would love to watch him play in our shirt again but we have way bigger concerns right now like FBs and RW.
If we sign him, these same posters who are blaming the club for not trying to re sign Ronaldo will be the ones slating the club for buying a 33 year old for 100 million instead of buying a LB & RW.

If we wanted Ronaldo I'm pretty sure Madrid would want Martial in a deal. I would of liked to see him back but I don't see him fitting into this team. He's best through the middle now which would mean benching Lukaku. That's not going to happen. He will find it easy in the Italian league.

Even if we are interested ourselves, i doubt Madrid will sell him to us. They would prefer to sell him to Juventus. Unless Ronaldo makes it clear he only wants to join us then i would think Madrid would relent.

But this is kind of amusing to me. I am expecting lots of news outlets and journos linking him to us after this Juventus story broke just to generate more clicks but amazingly there have been no signs of this at all. We have been absolutely quiet and staying out of this i guess

In Mourinho's 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 with wide forwards, it'll be a waste of time to sign Ronaldo. Only if we're going to change formation to one with 2 strikers that I'll get him in a heartbeat, but we don't play with this often, not under Mourinho anyway.

And I think him signing for Juve is the best for everyone, him, Madrid and Juve. All will benefit from it anyway. He himself will prefer a much slower league in which he can save his efforts for last run in CL as he was doing in Madrid than a physically exhausting league like EPL. Also succeeding with 3 teams will furthermore strengthen his legendary state than joining a previous club.

Yeah, but it makes total sense for Juventus to go for Ronaldo. They have a good squad assembled with a couple tries left at doing something great before their current core disbands, be it due to retirement (Chiellini, Matuidi, Khedira, Mandzu, Cuadrado) or them leaving the team (Dybala, Sandro, maybe even Pjanic and Betancur).

Can't understand how they can look at Juve going for this signing and United not going with the same reasoning.

So whats the tax rate in Italy?
If its 30m after tax than 1m per week? More even?

This is finally hitting me, a bit dissappointed to be honest. If he signed for us, and won a couple of league titles no one would bat an eye that a 33 year old costed 100 million euros. Had the potential to be a RVP-esque transfer.

Only way I can see him joining us is :

1. He tells Real he wants to come back and go nowhere else
2. He takes a pay cut for "love of the club" so that our wages aren't too inflated
3. He is willing to be benched once in a while so that Rashford and Martial have chances to play
4. Jose is going to change to a 2 striker formation

In summary: I don't think he will join us at all.

Whichever way you dress it up, he was very poor from August - Jan.

He scored 16 times during that said period and broke the CL record of scoring in all six group stage games, his league record was poor mainly due to his lengthy suspension at the beginning of season and being generally very unlucky. There were Barca fans who said the same. His bad run is exaggerated and even then he did the business during Feb-May where big trophies are won. He's in decline from his hey days but is still putting up numbers 99.9% of footballers on this planet aren't capable of.

Signing a player of his caliber and profile for €100m in this current market is great piece of business by Juventus because their current XI is settled and they can afford to spend big on a luxury signing. Ibra had his best ever goalscoring season when he was 34 and Ronaldo is probably once in a generation athlete. People have been predicting his demise for 4 years now but he's been proving them wrong year after year. At Juve it'll be the same.

He wants to move to a club which can contend for CL, Juve have reached 2 CL Finals in last 4 seasons and generally go deep every year. We are far from contenders so that already rules us out. Plus winning the league is not a gimme for us (or any other club in PL for that matter) whereas it is for Juventus.

Torn on this, on the one hand it's fecking Ronaldo! Seeing him in a United shirt again would be amazing. But spending 100 mil on a 33 y/o just doesn't make sense given our current squad and the needs we have. Plus a 4 year deal would probably mean we relive the entire Rooney saga all over again in 2 years. Makes more sense for Juve as they have little to no competition in the league and are really just looking for the final push in the CL. As long as we address other needs this transfer window, I don't think it will bother me much seeing him go to Juve.

Here in Spain everybody has already taken it as a deal done, all the media take it for granted. There should be a massive and dramatic twist to break the deal, like, beyond any soap opera Real-Ronaldo have done before.

No idea why we wouldn't be in for him even at that price and age with all the money we've sp*nked over the past few years. We are a shambles in the transfer market.

I have to admit that i'm feeling a little jealous seeing him go to Juventus. Their fans must be absolutely creaming themselves over this transfer now

Safe option for him. Juve is like Bayern, they have a league title flatrate. So he will get titles, this is hgood for his ballon ambitions. I do not want him for 20 Mio. more than we have sold him.
