Cristiano Ronaldo (I stay)

He'll want to keep him, even if he's a bench option, it's still great quality to have available for any manager.

I can see that for some players, but this is Ronaldo, so him as an option from the bench is just going to be an ongoing issue, as is trying to start him every game given how ETH wants to play, I just can't see how it works.

Personally I think he must be close to leaving, as he's surely be back by now if he thought he was spending the season with us,

Surely if he does go, there's some sort of replacement? We can't rely on just Martial...

You don't keep a 500k/wk player on the bench. That's a waste of resource. Ten Hag wants Ronaldo gone -- pronto. So he can bring in the player he can trust. See how he revealed he hasn't even talked with Ronaldo. There is no attempt at persuasion. Ronaldo needs to leave.

Will be really nice if we can manage to get rid and sign Antony as a result. We'll have great attacking options if we do that: LW (Rashford / Elanga), RW (Sancho / Antony) and Forward (Martial / Rashford).

The way the accounting has been explained to me was that if someone pays a 15M transfer fee to us + takes his 25M in wages off the books, you can project that wage bill into the future (i.e., you're able to pay 25M now, so you'll be able to pay 25M in the following seasons as well).

So that's 15M + a typical contract length of 5 years = 5*25M available = 140M total for the next 5 years for fee + wages.

So that could potentially be a 60M fee +16M / yr (300k p/w) available for a new player. (Or some combination of that)

Appreciate it if someone could confirm the calculations.

that’s some interesting accounting for sure

When Carrick benched him against Chelsea, didn’t see him complaining. Didn’t see him complain when Ole had him on the bench against Everton too.

No, but Sir Alex Ferguson did and we know Ronaldo will have Sir Alex's phone number (from August 2021) so maybe he thought that rather be seen to be a moaning minnie himself, why not get his ex-Boss to say something instead, with the end result that CR7 was the first name on the team sheet, from that match onwards?

Having said that, I don't disagree with your analysis of the later part of the season meaning that he had to play more often than he possibly should have. We all know the problems the younger players had, but I was very disappointed with the attitude Cavani showed (whom I loved for that wonder goal the previous season, alone) he really did let himself down and the club down in difficult circumstances. Having said that (I seem to be arguing against myself tonight!) I still don't understand why league rules were bent (broken?) to give Cavani's shirt number to Ronaldo which we were told he was OK about, but was he, was he, really?

Must be, Martial was such an obvious improver under a decent manager, but it's still Martial, and there's no way we can rely on him.
We're probably bringing in another attacker and the burden of scoring will be handled by committee rather than a single individual.

While I expect Martial to improve and have a good season this year under Ten Hag, he's still injury prone, so even with a motivated and improved Martial, he's still likely to miss games and we'll find ourselves thin in attack if we don't bring in anyone else and Ronaldo leaves.

I wonder if ETH actaully wants him to stay, or if he's just saying the right things in case he does.

I think Ten Hag would rather he was moved on to be honest. Look at this way:
  • he’s missed the entirety of pre-season, and thus, hasn’t an iota about how Ten Hag wants to play
  • he’s in the twilight of his career so we’ll have to plan without him next summer at the latest anyway
  • his status within the game means it’s a story every time he’s left out of the XI or even substituted. Ten Hag can do without that unnecessary drama
And that’s before we even get to Ronaldo’s own play style and suitability to play Ten Hag’s system, which is probably the biggest factor in Ten Hag’s mind regarding Ronaldo. All in all, it’s simply better that he leaves and we get in a younger, hungrier player who fits the manager’s system better.

He was allowed to miss the first part of the pre-season trip - yes (family reasons) and we know what they are and I have no issue with that, I'm sure all Utd. fans respect this.

However, we need him back and we really need him getting into condition and I would hope to see his name on the team sheet for the Villa game 23/7/22, if only on the subs bench for a ten-fifteen minute run out.

That would be some trick with him being in Portugal and the game kicking off in Australia in around 14 hours time. If he is to figure in next weeks games he needs to report for training on Monday and all indications are that he won't. Our best connected sources seem to be pretty consistent in their view that he has played his last game for the club and won't actually leave Portugal until he has a new club to go to.

'Like Totti joining Lazio'

Still certain it's a ploy from Mendes to try to draw out interest from Florentino Perez the same way he used the Citeh card last summer.

I don't think it'll work though, Real are better off without him and I don't see him joining a master of the dark arts like Cholo Simeone

We are undoubtedly better next year with Ronaldo, but if he's not committed cut him lose. He was a legend, but no player is bigger than the club.

Martial/Rashford as strikers would be the options. But is Martial's injury prone/inconsistent & Rashford isn't a consistent backup either (poor touch, vision, decision making, and passing skills for possession-based system).

IF Greenwood's charges were dropped (high probability given his ex doesn't press charges and just wants to settle for money) & IF the club/fans would take him back, that would be the future striker partnership. Bring in Antony to play the RW, Sancho on LW and that's a great youth core. Rashford, Amad, Garnacho, Amad, & Pellistri can be backup/loan army.
Whatever the result of pending legal matters no way is that individual going to play for the club ever again.

Never mind fan outrage....we would lose pretty much every corporate sponsorship revenue we have....and we would deserve to.

Who has confirmed that at this point? I know there is a ton of speculation and that he is definitely looking to leave, but I think we are actively trying to keep him too, right? So it’s not a foregone conclusion?

No.

Nothing confirmed so not foregone more of an acceptance that he genuinely wants out and won't return if he can find any escape route. If he cannot get a move to a big club which is looking less and less likely I do think he will opt to move somewhere like Sporting even though he earlier denied it because the loss of face in coming back to Manchester now would be too big a blow for his ego to take. In Portugal he would have a shot at domestic league and cup titles and at least the potential to make the knock out rounds in the CL and pad his record some more. I just cannot envisage him willingly coming back to play Bodo/Glimt on a Thursday 24 hours after Messi has dazzled in Paris against Inter or whoever in the CL.

Absolute top red, you were suggesting if we get rid of Ronaldo goals would be spread out throughout the team(magically). Yeah Mc Fred ect are going to just start scoring loads because we will be so fluid, get a grip. It's being grounded in reality, the lack of quality and management is why we were lucky to finish 6th, be in the bottom half with Ronaldo last year. That can't be argued so don't bother.

We need a better squad and lack strikers, we'll struggle to score up top without Ronaldo, simple as. Like it or not he's still a great finisher and always gives a great return. It's not worshipping Ronaldo as you said, it's just not being a balloon saying the goals will be automatically spread out. If he goes we need to find a replacement, arguably two need to come in.
We finished second before he came. He may have scored goals but we definitely lost something and we became worse.

No, this would have left the club massively at risk of a wrongful dismissal claim if charges were dropped. As it stands we can release him and demand back every penny of the wages during his suspension, and let his contract just tick over until completion if it takes longer (and again take back all the wage money on being found guilty)
Even if charged are dropped there’s always Gross Misconduct to fall back on.

Now that United appears to be no longer run by idiots I’m sure the club is capable of engaging a decent lawyer.

It's because only people on redcafe are so completely delusional and idiotic. There is absolutely no way Greenwood will return to Man Utd and if you believe he will you are a cretin. As always my 50£ bet for charity stands for anyone who thinks he will play another game for Man Utd. I have posted this about five times and nobody ever takes it up because everyone knows there's absolutely no path back for Greenwood.

I agree with all that you say. I don't think he will play for us, and I don't want him anywhere near the club. However, I don't think that chance is zero.

On that basis, and the fact this is for charity, I am happy to take you up on your offer, if the £50 goes to a domestic violence charity. What do you think?

Nicely said, 100% he is done at Utd but I also will go for another £50 if @Reapersoul20 would go to £100. Maybe a time limit on the bet?

Is this greasy cnut still whoring himself about?

The fact he'd go to Atletico Madrid speaks volumes.

This is just Ronaldo's world, everyone has to adjust to him.

We managed to spread out the goals across our attacking line and score more goals in total the season before Ronaldo, and the season before that, and the season before that, and the season before that. It doesn't take magic to do that, it's just what happens naturally in a team that doesn't focus on setting up one player. You'd know that if you shared the reality the rest of us are in.

I bet you £200 that Ronaldo won't be a United player in seven days and a twenty years

Haha I’ll swerve that one thankyou all the same. If offering the same Monday afternoon I’ll take you up on the offer (provided nothing has happened)

Very true there are still Ronaldo fans holding onto the belief that he can press if the manager wants him to, but even if he had the attitude, legs and determination to that, at least if he was there from the first day of training there would be a small chance of getting aboard the Ten Hag train. Ten Hag is such a technical manager and Ronaldo will start the season with no instruction if he stays.

Yeah I’d imagine we have backup plans to get rid of him even if he somehow got away with it. Either way they’re doing the right thing with the indefinite suspension.

It's if he doesn't fit the system, then he goes to the bench, simple as.

No not Memphis, he failed here, his time is done.

Theres not a single attribute Martial has over Ronaldo. He’s gone from being on the transfer list after a failed loan at Seville to being the best striker in the prem within the space of 2 weeks according to some.

Indeed. For all the talk of player power these days, clubs are still wealthy and powerful institutions, with reputations and images to protect.

Footballers doing bad (or just daft) things is hardly a new phenomenon, so clubs must have built up a body of expertise in how to draft contracts that are both catch-all and enforceable. Even clubs with Matt Judge involved, we hope…

It’s kind of hilarious that we’re talking about one of the top five players to ever play the game, and nobody wants him. Not just the managers, but supporters too. Fans of his current club want him to leave, and fans of the top teams he’s linked to don’t want him to join.

Yeah I won't bother arguing, since you were already corrected by other members.

Hope you can get over it one day and realize, that your big hero has in fact, become pretty replacable.
I would take a good bet that we manage to 'magically' outscore the 57 league goals of last season without signing a striker.

Is the "open to a move to Athletico" a similar play to the City move. He knew we'd never allow him to join City. Is he banking on Real stepping in to stop him joining Atletico. I think he's making a mistake if he thinks that will happen. I'm surprised Athletico would be interested, doesn't Simeone expect his forwards to press? Ronaldo wouldn't fit in there.

For sure, it's done! £100 to a domestic violence charity of the winners choosing (that was actually my original post/intention when I posted this first a few weeks ago - feels weird betting on this otherwise). I pay out if he ever plays for the Man Utd first team in any capacity, bench or starting. Ye pay £50 each if he doesn't - happy on any time-limit for this, ye can choose.

Fair play to ye, I hope I am right and the club never lets him near it again. I'd be really personally disappointed in the club if he did. It would really dampen my support, so losing £100 would be the least of my worries. I'd be saving on a few tickets to games and associated costs anyway which is a big multiple of that when you fly over for a few games every year from Ireland.

On subject of Ronaldo....nah, I can't be arsed. I just didn't want to completely derail thread. Everything to be said has been said from one extreme to the other. The person who said the lack of nuance/grey area in this discussion summarized it best a few pages ago, can't remember who it was.
