Best he can do is add to his CL goals tally at a second tier club probably, which should be good enough.

He chases records, records don't chase him like he says so it will be difficult for him to be a backup option and sit on the bench, he needs to be out there adding to his goal tally at a minimum and can't sully himself in Europa. At this stage though it seems very few want to upset their team dynamic over the marketing he'd bring.

When he came back here most of us thought if we don't get CL he'd be off and while I've been supportive of him during last season I expect and would like him to leave to any CL club, doesn't matter which.

Messi isn’t playing as an 8 if you actually understand what that position entails.

Also, he averages the second most shots in the team slightly behind Mbappe.

Ok fine, he still plays deep, not as their main goalscorer. He will not catch that 15 goals in a season that is for sure.

Also if you can so kindly pull out that total shots figure so we can see how slightly behind mbappe he was?

Castles is a good source for Mendes related stuff - but then again he's pretty much a mouthpiece, so it's hardly inconceivable that Mendes had him come out with the story in order to - well - push United into making a move.

I don't recall anyone on City's side actually commenting on it.

I think Pep was asked in a press conference on the day it all kicked off, he did distance City from the move but it was looking likely Ronaldo was United bound at this stage.

The way he has been linked with Napoli, Barcelona, and Atleti this summer would lead me to believe that the City links were all from his side.

If Ronaldo stays at United with no UCL and Messi scores just 5 this season it's looking a bit sticky for Ronaldo for sure.

He is on Penalties iirc.

Tbf to him he does have a point, the shitstorm from the fans if Ole/Woodward rejected Ronaldo would've been incredible. Unfortunately most United fans don't really watch football outside of United, if most of them had a look on what Juve fans were saying about him you would've seen major red flags.

Agreed. There is no way Ole could have rejected CR7, especially when SAF pushed for it strongly. About red flags, just have a look at the juventus forum even now.

We only signed him due to him nearly going to city. We’re the only ones that could of stopped that. I’d of thought Ronaldo would of showed some loyalty though and rejected them Lot straight away. If any other Europe team would of wanted him we might not of gone in for him.

That just shows how he genuinely doesn't care about United though doesn't it? All he wanted was another ego stroke. He knows United fans love him.

This has really soured his legacy here, I hope it was worth it for him. 1 season extra of CL football to ruin his image amongst millions.

How many Europa League goals has Messi got? feck all I bet. Ronaldo could blow him out of the water on that one in a single game. Then he'd be higher than Messi in all European competition goals.

Yes - I mean, I don't think someone like Castles just invents stuff out of thin air: Mendes in all likelihood has been in "contact" with clubs (both last season and now), and some of these clubs may even have - sort of - considered a deal.

But what someone like Castles can do is to promote the idea that this "contact" amounts to actual, genuine interest - when the reality is that key figures at the potential buying clubs aren't really keen on Ronaldo at all (like Tuchel, say - or Pep for that matter, last season).

Ye I think a lot of it with him is all about ego and he wanted to be the one to win us something or make us great again so everyone will be talking about him. Loves the attention but when things go bad he sulks… not really a team player. If he stays though I hope he scores a ton of goals and we win a trophy… I’d hate for him to ruin his reputation and relationship with us and leaving on bad terms.

It should have been ruined in 2008 when he said he was a slave.

He's never cared about the club and the fans shouldn't be surprised at his recent episode against the club.
 
A loan with us paying part of his wages wouldn't be ideal, but it's still better than having to pay his whole salary while he's here disrupting everything.

Normally when you make a mistake you have to pay for it and we made a big one here last summer. Bigger harm than "paying part of his wages" has been done and could be done again, so in which conditions he leaves now I'd say it's almost irrelevant and the less of our problems.

Luckily for us the guy seems determined to leave so the club can take a patient stance here without showing any desperation, as we're doing by the moment publicly at least. So if he wants to move he should be the one making concessions and not us. But if at some point there's an option after tons of rejections and we have to contribute in some way to close this rotten chapter we should do it without hesitation.

Objectively speaking, moving to City would’ve been the best move for his career from a sporting perspective at the time so can see why he was interested in the idea (more than just an ego stroke).

P.S. when other players do it, why is there not a big deal made out of it? Like when Fabregas did a similar thing and moved to Chelsea from Barca (and in his prime too) despite playing for Arsenal, where he was still appreciated. Why did nobody care that much or label him a mercenary or egoist? Genuine question

he’s got 1 year left on his contract (with an option for us to trigger the 3rd) loan makes no sense at all

I was happy when he came back and during the season but some problems persisted. His acting now is scandalous imo and hopefully he'll find a club cause his potential comeback, if nobody will want him, could be close to disastrous to the team.

We'll have to wait and see. I feel the same as you right now but at the same time he's a professional who wants to play football so if he has no options he just simply has to buy in.

Wouldn't be against it, it would save money and drama. At the same time you're down a striker in a very thin position, which means Rashford has to play ST if Martial goes down. I don't know if I prefer that. Maybe Bruno as a false 9? But we definitely need Frenkie to make that work.

In short, the level of the rivalry/fan feeling aspect isn't comparable at all (to Ronaldo going to City).

To most Arsenal fans it would've been far worse if Fabregas had gone to Spurs.

Out of all the managers we've had post-Fergie, Solskjaer was the one with the least power.

This thread is crazy. He’s here another 12 months and that’s it. This isn’t a Sanchez style issue.

I’ve no doubt that if he doesn’t move he’ll stay and crack on for the next 12 months professionally. It’s not some kind of huge problem.

Has he acted like a model professional for the past 12 months? Not sure he has.

If he is benched and used as an impact sub he will lose his shit and cause problems.

I dunno, they’re both intra city rivals albeit not north London. Man C aren’t necessarily our biggest rivals either - that would be liverpool.

I think it’s probably more to do with the stature of player at hand. If another ex player was moving to City, I doubt many would care. Many werent that bothered when Schmeicel did it neither did they with Law.
 
If he's not able to find a club by the week of the new season, he should be docked wages if he doesn't show up and participate. Time for the club to actually stand up for once. Why should one player hold a club ransom?

Law was slightly before the relationship with City became what it is today.

But, yes - of course it has something to do with the particular status of the player. Ronaldo remains an incredibly high-profile player - Schmeichel was not at the time.

Also, yes - in general United fans don't really care that much about City, certainly not compared to Liverpool. But not caring about them winning trophies is different from not caring about former players actually joining them - that's still something most fans aren't indifferent to.

In terms of silverware sure, but we paid him more than City offered - and the 'homecoming' story was way more financially beneficial than going to a soulless dump like City.

Arsenal had the choice to re sign him but turned it down. You'd probably have to ask Arsenal fans how they felt about Cesc, but i'm quite sure they weren't happy.

City didn't even agree on a fee with Juve, I don't think they even wanted to pay one for him which tells you everything about how much they really wanted him.

You're ignoring the media aspect of things. Ole simply resting Ronaldo for a game had the entire media frothing at the mouth and complaining non stop about it, putting pressure on Ole to play him even if he otherwise wouldn't have wanted to play him. Your Roy Keane and the likes were repulsed at the idea of resting let alone benching Ronaldo and wouldn't stop making those issues and feelings known on tv every chance they'd get.

Ten Hag attempting to rest or bench Ronaldo would cause a media storm which is further pressure and distraction on the team and would get in the way of the coaches trying to work as intended and without impediment.

Ronaldo being left out as you suggest would have the media pressuring Ten Hag and every slightly average performance without him would be vindication for the media to pile on Ten Hag.

It'll cause plenty of issues if he's sulking and his agent starts talking crap via the media. It creates a negativity atmosphere that will affect the team
