Cristian Romero

He is such a hilarious shithouse. The kind of player you almost inevitably hate if he's not playing for your club.

Has pushed the limit a few times though and is likely going to get himself sent off soon.

He's been great for us overall though so far.

I think he’s class, a really good player. And while he is a massive shithouse, it’s so cartoonishly villainous I quite like it

Don't be silly, he is a fantastic player but he plays too much on the edge and this time he was quite silly leaving his studs when already won the ball.

He got away with it the first time and then makes even worse challenge. Was a nice moment when Oliver showed him that red card.

He's a brilliant defender, I think his discipline can let him down from time to time but he's very good.

Brilliant even? That is a bit much for a player of his abilities no?

Seems to fit that hot head Argentinian CB mold. Average on the ball, not particularly insightful when defending. Mostly does everything with all he got, but that is about it.

And he is a special kind of stupid.

Also very average

He's the most South American footballer you can find. Top defender but full of snide tricks and kicks on opposition.

He should've got a red for the first kick out on Colwill. Spurs would've preferred that to the penalty.

If there ever was a way to see what would have happened if Rojo played for Spurs.

I think he's a quality defender whenever I've seen him cover the defensive side of the game, he's always been proficient at this.

Other sides of his game certainly valid to critique. I'd have taken him to partner Martinez if Spurs were still in a rut though Levy wouldn't sanction it.

You can be a great player and also be a specialist in the dark arts. It’s not really dark arts when you make it really obvious for everyone to see and constantly get punished for it though.

Dirty player, always has been always will be

More like typical Argentine defender things with aggressive style of play. Argentine clubs game were much worse when it comes to trying to sore up your opponents. Romero, Lisandro, Otamendi, Rojo, Demichelis just represent that style in recent time in PL.

Average? jeez :D as over the top as he can be from time time too with his malice.

He has everything anyone wants ina CB, but like many players in this role they need to play and live in that edge, Ramos was that way, Pepe too, Montero and so many others. Yet I fully agree that he should leave that extra malice aside, specially when he gets riled up.

Incredible the timing of the Spurs, he was really in great form, great partnership with Van and after he does that silly extra studs Van gets injured minutes later, Ange might feel cursed

Does he have pace? I dont think his ability on the ball is anything special either.

But he excels as a defender, if he got rid of the discipline issues he's up there for one of the best in the league. He's fantastic, anyone saying otherwise likely has seen him extensively.

I’m not sure you can be classified as brilliant when you’ve got that in you every game.

How many times did Ramos get sent off for Real Madrid yet he's obviously in top 5 CBs of last decade for what he's won for club and country.

The South Americans play on the edge so much, could tell he was trying to get a reaction from Enzo Fernandez but it backfired spectacularly.

I do admire that mindset of hugging and kissing in the tunnel and as soon as the whistle goes it turns into world war 3 on the pitch between them.

He's an idiot. Has the audacity to complain about his red card, when he's lucky that it wasn't a simple second yellow after his kick out a few minutes before.

A thug who seems to constantly play in-and-around the line, flirting with going over it and causing harm.

Dirty fecker. Feck him. Absolute cnut of a player.

Paid for his sh#thousery with a red.

For me it should have been 2 yellows, one for the petulant kick out, one for the clearance, he gets the ball but on the stretch makes contact with the shin, but w/e they arrived at the correct result. This is what cost Spurs, Romero is the VC and a senior member of the squad. You can forgive Udogie a 20 year old kid getting caught up in the moment, not Romero, let his team down.

Does he have pace? I dont think his ability on the ball is anything special either.

He is an extremely composed player, he never feels threatend when attacking players press him either. His marking and positioning are excellent, his tackles too and he is agressive in the good sense too, he's not a passive player and isn't afraid of anyone he has to face no matter the quality...YET he likes to leave an extra mark, in an old guard way "don't come this way" that sometimes can backfire.

He plays constantly through balls, has impecable timing, he's great in the air and has that winning mentality that pushes his mates with through balls or even carrying the ball upfront, this last aspect can be dangerous when he has a limited partner and he should realize this more often (happened in the past, now with Van that is also a great CB it's doable and allows both to be more proactive).

But the thing with him is that at this stage of his carreer, even if he still is young, if he can get riled up in the wrong way like today he'll anyway end being view and perceive (specially by the ocasional viewer) as full time total reckless player and he isn't.

Regarding the match the pen was more orange than red, but today with VAR? it's a FECKING RED and I have no doubt that he already was in piss off mode after his prior reaction minutes before (that could have been a soft red too) when he considered he was fouled and frustrated kicked a Chelsea player from the floor. This kind of moments are annoying with him, because most of times he is cool as fvck and with malice but in control, yet he already made this type of plays like today in other ocassions so sadly it might come with the package for his whole carreer.

He seems to be a bit of a nut case. I feel like it’s way more common in South American defenders, to just completely lose the plot and have crazy moments that really put your team up against it.

RCB Romero
LCB Rojo

would have loved to see that

Fecking love the fvcker, what a beats pf a defender and a huge personality to boot

He's definitely a great CB, smooth on the ball, never seems like a press bothers him. Absolute monster in defence and happy to put his body on the line, and regularly picks up a few goals. Reminds me of Ramos in a lot of ways, including the sh&thousery and red cards.

But for my money it's his partner at Spurs who could end up being an absolute superstar, can't believe VDV is only 23, still a bit raw and a lot to learn. But a left footed CB with his kind of pace and power, I'm not sue there is another CB in world football that could of made that run for the opening goal vs United.

I can't believe he flew under our Dutch radar :nervous:

He's certainly in decent form but I'm surprised to see such praise, he looks a liability at times

Yeah Van de Ven is the better of the two, he's very very good. I'm also amazed that Romero has managed to concede 2 penalties against us without conceding a penalty. Very impressive.

Recency bias. He's in a good run of form, in a system that puts a lot of emphasis on the CBs being very physical and aggressive, and right now it's going quite well for him. But as you say, he can be errror-prone.
