Crisis at United (December 2001)

If memory serves, in his book Stam hits out directly at SAF's brother(or son, I can't remember). So yeah, he was calling out nepotism at out club back then.

My bad if he directly referenced his family. I've seen the term thrown around quite a bit in the Ole discussion on playing favorites and Woodwards appointments in recent months

Fergie admitted to be in the wrong for selling Stam, but he also said the poor form in the first half of that season was largely down to the uncertainty hanging over the club due to his supposed departure. We went on a run immediately once he announced that he was staying.

Losing to Leverkusen in the CL semi was bad though, couldve been a great final against the Galacticos.

People comparing SAF with Ole are not the brightest are they. I mean, both of their situations couldn't be any more different but they desperately keep looking for some random "similar" things to make them sleep better being convinced that Ole is SAF v2. I mean seriously, what the hell some of you are smoking

Its really starting to bug me that we're using the word "nepotism" incorrectly. Nepotism is derived from Italian and describes favors bestoved upon family and kin, not buddies. nipote literally means nephew.

Not in English.

In the Oxford dictionary the term is broadened to include favouring friends as well as relatives.

It’s entirely applicable when describing the way Man Utd is run.

I read Stam's book quite recently.

I dont remember that bit.

Cronyism is the right word - favours for friends. Not nepotism.

Crackin find that. Obviously can’t compare it to now but it’s good to cast your minds back to that.

Who else remembers that infamous league losses acronym of Bolton, Liverpool, Arsenal, Newcastle and Chelsea? :nervous:

He looked absolutely ancient on the pitch... signed at the same age Ronaldo is now. Probably still turned out better than Kevin Hofland would've

I rember that, pretty sure I was at the Bolton game and it was really bad. Funninly enough I seem to remember querioz was getting the blame more than blanc but the defence was a shambles in the early part of the season.

I also remember we went on a really good run round Christmas and into January with R.V.N scoring goals for fun and I think we were top of the table around February before falling away again.

We were also in crisis in December 2002 aswell weren't we, 3 games to finish fergie wasn't it? Then we won all three games including forlanfield and beating arsenal at home to stop one of there long unbeaten runs. Happy times.

The first lady is right, we shouldn't have sold Stam, one of Fergie's biggest mistakes. Playing Scholes up front with Ruud also took a lot of time to adjust to.

The Stam sale is right up there with Bebe in the "wonder if someone will ever admit the truth" locker.

There were rumours of it being about his book, but talk of how he'd dropped a gear.
Then a few months later failed a drugs test which seems much more likely a reason, we knew about it!!

Queiroz came a year later.

I remember a lot of fans were also putting down our poor start to not properly replacing Steve McClaren. Jim Ryan and Michael Phelan were placed in as temporary assistants at the time.

But yeah defensively we were awful. Barthez completely losing it with blunder after blunder didnt help that season either.

Phelan was the problem all along.
