Cricket

Considering they recently lost to Afghanistan at home, I don't think so.. But ya,a competitive series would be nice.
England will hopefully give you a game next year. But every team is going to struggle in India unless they have two top-class spinners and an amazing batting line-up. Hard to see many teams that fit that description atm.

This SA performance has been diabolical bar the first innings in the first test. I doubt Bangla would be that bad, esp considering they see India as "rivals"

Fair play to Shakib and Bangladeshi cricketers. The BCB seem to be a fecking joke.

Morons made a rule in their version of IPL that every team should have a leg spinner and a 140kmph bowler

I read this somewhere recently and I was like 'that can't be true!'

SA cricket firmly in crisis now. Quotas need to go. Faf needs to go. Bavuma, De Bruyn need to go. Markram as captain, bring in at least 2 new batsmen, new coach and new selectors.

One of the worst performances I've ever seen from a South African team. They got bowled out twice in 103 overs, that's just over a day's play. In this series, in the 6 innings they batted, they were able to score 200+ just twice!
And it's not just their batting, they conceded 500+ or near 500 scores in 3 out of the 4 times they bowled and in one innings India declared for 323 in 67 overs scoring at about 5 runs per over. So far, this has been a trip to forget for the saffers

Why has Shakib been banned?

Shakib told the anti-corruption unit of the International Cricket Council (ICC) he "did not act upon", "provide any information" or "receive any money or other reward" for the approaches.

He has been punished for failing to disclose "full details of any approaches or invitations received to engage in corrupt conduct", a statement from the governing body said.

"I am obviously extremely sad to have been banned from the game I love, but I completely accept my sanction for not reporting the approaches," said Shakib, who is also Bangladesh's Twenty20 captain.

The ICC has published a list of written reasons behind its decision to ban Shakib following interviews the all-rounder had with the ICC's anti-corruption unit on 23 January 2019 and 27 August 2019. These include:

  • Shakib admitted he was aware his phone number had been given to Deepak Aggarwal. Aggarwal is "an individual known to the ACU and suspected of involvement in corruption in cricket", the ICC said.
  • In November 2017, Shakib exchanged various WhatsApp messages with Aggarwal, in which Aggarwal attempted arrange a meeting.
  • In January 2018, during the tri-series against Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka, Shakib engaged in further WhatsApp conversations with Aggarwal.
  • On 19 January 2018, following a match in the tri-series that day, Aggarwal sent Shakib a message saying "do we work in this or I wait til the IPL". The ICC says "work" was a reference to Shakib providing inside information.
  • Shakib did not report this contact to the ICC.
  • On 23 January 2018, Shakib received another message from Aggarwal which said "Bro anything in this series?"
  • Shakib did not report this message and admitted this related to Aggarwal's request to provide inside information from the ongoing tri-series.
  • On 26 April 2018, during the IPL where Shakib played for Sunrisers Hyderabad, he received a WhatsApp message from Aggarwal asking him whether a particular player was going to be playing in the game that day.
  • Aggarwal continued this conversation by talking about bitcoins, dollar accounts and asked Shakib for his dollar account details. During this conversation, Shakib told Mr Aggarwal he wanted to meet him "first".
  • Of the messages received on 26 April 2018, the ICC found a number had been deleted. Shakib confirmed these deleted messages contained requests for inside information.
  • Shakib said he felt Aggarwal was "dodgy" and he had a feeling he was a "bookie".
  • Shakib did not report the approaches on 26 April 2018.

Jeez - I thought he'd been done in by the BCB for the protest, but 1 year for that is really lenient.

He must be an icon in Bangladesh - why would he do something as stupid as this? Bizarre.

He is as big as Kohli and and was at one point approaching Tendulkar status. but was never totally adored because he has selfish and narcissistic tendencies, unlike captain courageous Mushrafe who can do no wrong, even bowling like a village trundler in World Cup! Shakib has Many local $million sponsorships etc. Loaded and loved, esp after CWC 2019 efforts.

Given the evidence (and I suspect there is other stuff he did but with no evidence he got away with), he was probably very tempted to participate in information sharing and spot betting. But decided against it and never acted on his urges.

Else it makes no sense to me. But then he’s so loaded, making some extra dosh through betting also makes no sense.

Entire thing makes no sense.

PM Hasina has been sympathetic towards him encouraging people to ‘forgive him for his big mistake’. Most likely because he also slated to become an MP once he’s done With cricket, but might also be to ensure quick rebahibilitation after ban.

Those things in the BBC article -- this is not failing to report an approach.. he just about escaped being caught for spot fixing.

What's the reaction like in Bangladesh? As a sport fan, I'd be gutted if a player in my team got done for this.

I agree and also write above, sounds like he was very tempted but ended up bailing in spot betting fixing.

Well it’s just been announced so let see!

But PM Hasina coming out with sympathy will help him a lot. Fan base will feel deeply conflicted as this is self inflicted damage based on greed. And there is a massive anti corruption drive and campaign against illegal casino gambling since last few months so he may get caught up in all that.

Seems like the locals are going out in support of him, making a huge leap of faith in the unknown, and reacting quite cleverly to idiots like Vaughan.

Here is a typical post on facebook which captures sentiments I've seen a lot of:

I want to ask Mr Vaughan that you think Shakib should punish more whereas he didn't involve with any kind of corruption and his fault was , someone offered him for match fixing and HE REJECTED The OFFER but he didn't tell it to the "ACU". So without doing any crime he punished for two years and on the other hand Player like Steve Smith and David Warner brought sandpaper and proven guilty for ball tempering and punished for only 1 year (later before world cup the punishment reduced to 10 months). In the other hand Shakib banned for 2 years before T20 world cup. Is it you call justice!! Is it because Shakib is not from a big country. I thing law is equal for all is only a myth. And this kind of lame clauses need to be corrected.
My request to Mr Vaughan as a former cricketer you should give more respect other cricketer. You should stand against injustice.

That sounds a bit deluded. He should be banned for longer.

Also he's banned for a year and can play the next world cup.

Another significant international cricketing figure is also expected to be charged within the coming weeks as investigators unravel a web of fixing linked to two major bookies.

From the Telegraph article.

I don't want to name any player as it might be libelous for the Caf but I think seeing that AL Jazeera documentary and the recent news, there seems to be a certain name which stands out.

Our T20 form has turned to shit this year, just in time for the T20 WC next year.

Pakistan’s decision not to pick Abbas proving to be another masterstroke by Misbah...

Marnus looks like a class act. Also Pakistan's record in Australia is just horrendous.

Marnus is quality. Terrific find for Aussies.

He’s been excellent from the moment he had to step into their team on no notice. Has the mental strength, patience & technique to be successful in Tests.
