Cricket ODI Auction Draft

Didn't want to address this during the game since it'll be counter-productive to me winning if I wax lyrical about one of my opponent's players.

I wasn't lying when I said Mahela is my favourite batsman ever. A lot is made of ABdV being a 360 degree player, but I think Mahela is actually in the same mould, particularly against spin. I feel he just has so much ability and can simply place the ball wherever he wants regardless of who the spinner is. If he gets out to spin, it's mostly because he's trying out something fairly audacious as opposed to being unable to read spin or anything like that.

I think his late cut is a thing of beauty and it's a shot he's played so often that he can even predict that when he taps it, the ball spins off to the right after it pitches and it becomes harder for the fielder. I also think his shots to the leg side for a ball pitching outside off stump are magnificent and unusually well-timed.

He's always a little bit tentative early on in the innings for some inexplicable reason and if he doesn't get to 30 odd he'll get out. If he does play himself in, we're in for a treat though. It's weird that he never had those starting problems when he opened the batting. It was like the shackles were off and he was playing pace as effectively as he was playing spin. I could kill the Sri Lankan selectors for not giving him more opportunities there when it was clear he was performing well as an opener. I mean, why would you give Upul fecking Tharanga a go when you have your most talented batsman of all time finally coming good? It's insane!

But being a fan of Mahela is hard, he's just so frustrating! You find yourself just starting to get fed up to the back teeth with him and then he goes and scores a hundred out of nowhere in a World Cup final or in some such ridiculously unexpected game. He's incredible when you least expect him to be and I don't think I've ever enjoyed cricket as much after he retired.

Well argued by both you and @2mufc0 I think. MoYo's stats are a lot better than I thought they'd be. I do think they're a terrible pairing though, I'd be pulling my hair out everyday I watch them. Gilchrist is another one of your players that I'm a big fan of, but maybe that's a post for another day.

Well played and good luck going forward mate.

He's got them all; his sweeps both ways and the beautiful cover drive is what I remember most in ODI cricket. All fair points, and if the voters would have gone against me on it I couldn't have complained.

The only issue i have with MoYo here is his position, he wasn't really a top order batsman, ideally you want him coming in at 4/5.

I took a look at him before I went in for Stokes as a number 5 and came across his pretty fine stint one down in the early 2000s. Having been thwarted for Abbas I fell back on Yousuf as a makeshift three. I'll hold my hands up and admit it's less than ideal but I quite like the look of it (even if Himannv would be watching my MO from behind the couch!).

Raees looks like he's missing a genuine all-rounder, meaning too many overs will go to Bevan/Yuvraj, but other than that I really like what he's done. Crappy's batting from one to five is delicious. It comes down to how quickly you feel Raees' frontline bowlers can expose Crappy's tail, and on the other side how Crappy's less eye-catching but more multi-faceted unit would do against Raees' fine top order. It's a close one I would just about give to Crappy at the moment.

Likes of Waugh, Sachin and Lara have faced quality bowlers like Akram and Saqlain throughout their careers. No chance all 3 of them get cleaned up and even then I have Crowe and butler waiting next.

I agree with you that Raees needs another bowling option especially on 2 batting friendly wickets. Bowling even 5 overs of Yuvi on a pitch that does not support spin at all is not wise, let alone Bevan.

I think my bowling will get underrated because I don not have any legends in there. McDermott is a very solid option, and likes of Rabada and Cummins know how to bowl in modern day flat pitches. Plus I have 8 proper bowling options to account for anyone going for big runs.

Best of luck @crappycraperson. I think you have the better opening pair but I think Kane Williamson credentials are unbelievable at 3 and personally think I have the better proven finishers. Bowling wise - can’t see how your attack would hurt my batting lineup the same way Akram and Saqlain could do to yours.

Best of luck to you. Good team, just my luck I keep drawing strong teams in all drafts. :)

I would not argue that Yuvi and Bevan are top finishers but even as someone who scoffs at modern day batsmen who have padded up their stats, I rate Jos Butler very highly. He has performed under pressure in tough situations to be right up there as a great middle to lower order batsmen. Plus despite finishers, my top 4 is just too solid and would lay a great platform for the whole innings.

Herschelle Gibbs - South Africa's most destructive ODI opener of all time. Gibbs played a monumental innings against Australia, scoring 175 off just 111 balls leading South Africa to victory. In the group stage of the 2007 Cricket World Cup, Gibbs hit six sixes in an over off the bowling of Daan van Bunge becoming the first player in One Day International history to do so.

I was about to post highlights of Smith's 95 off 55 before I ran out of time. Such a great game to highlight those two players.

As good as that top 4 is, Akram can take out anyone and go on a run as he proved in the 92 final.

For me not is being made enough about my long batting lineup including Akram and Woakes who can both bat and hit sixes etc and the fact I have two of the best finishers in ODI cricket in Bevan and Yuvraj - proven World Cup greats.

Round 1 format

- 13 teams in total
- 12 teams will play head to head leading to 6 qualifying to QFs.
- One team left out will then join 3 best losers* for two more head to head knockouts, out of which 2 more will qualify to QFs.
- *Best loser to be defined by differential in votes with respect to the winner of the match. If multiple managers are tied on the same then vote differential will be counted again with votes of only non participating managers.(In case managers who advanced via super overs are tried then NRR for super over will come into play first). If tie is occurring even after same then we will play a super over game via PM to resolve it as required to be designed at that point.
- The team left out of the initial qualifying rounds will play the "worst" best loser qualifying for a second shot.

Lucky losers list:

1. @Mani - NRR: -1.00
2. @Fiskey - NRR: -4.00
3. Crappy / Raees

@harshad we will play your match either tomorrow or on Sunday.

I can conduct the super over if you guys can send the writeups in the next half hour or so

Super Over Crappy Vs Raees
Crappy bats first and sends Butler and Sachin. Akram with the ball for Raees.

Ball 1 - Akram bowls a yorker, but Butler reads it perfectly and hits it for a 6
Ball 2 - Akram with a good length delivery, Butler pulls it away for a couple of runs

Ball 3 - Akram with another good length delivery, but this time Butler slogs it away for a 6

This is turning out to be a HUUGE over for Crappy's team

14 runs off this over already

Ball 4 - Akram replies back with the perfect yorker. Buttler tried to pull it away and has lost his wicket in the process

Sachin on strike now and he has 2 balls to get Crappy's side to a mammoth score

Ball 5 - Sachin tries to slog away a bouncer and it is a dot ball
Ball 6 - Akram with another bouncer, and Sachin tries another slog.
How costly would this prove to be

Crappy''s side finish the innings on a competitive 14 runs. However, it was an impressive comeback from Raees' men who looked finished after 3 deliveries.

Raees has sent Yuvraj Singh, the man who guided India to a WC and a T20 WC win to face Rabada.

Ball 1- Rabada starts off with a bouncer. Yuvraj has positioned himself to drive the ball, and fails to connect it. 0 runs after the 1st ball

Ball 2 - Rabada bowls a brilliant yorker. The southpaw tries to pull it away and loses his wicket

This is a horrible start for Raees who now needs 14 runs off the last 4 deliveries to tie and 15 runs to win the game

Bevan, one of the finest finishers in the game, comes to the crease to try and win this game for his side

Ball 3 - Rabada with another Yorker. But this time Bevan manages to slog it to away to get his team off the mark .... 2 Runs

Ball 4 -Rabada with another Yorker, 3rd of the over. Bevan tries to pull the ball away and loses his wicket in the same way as his partner .....Out

Game over.

@crappycraperson wins the game by 12 runs.
