My brother maintains van Nistelrooy was just a tap-in merchant.

What rubbish opinions have you heard from your family and friends?

Cristiano Ronaldo and Thierry Henry were just flat track bullies. Andy Cole needs 10 chances to score 1 goal.

My dad stubbornly insists that playing out from the back is pointless and only causes problems.

My poor mum who's had to watch a lot of football in her life without ever really caring enough to work it out is a big one for this. 'Why are they messing about with the ball in our half, why don't they just kick it forward?!' She's not always wrong...

it is almost a penalty if a freekick is awarded at the edge of the box and you got free kick specialists like Beckham, P. Juninho , JWP, etc.
No, even freekick specialists score no more than 20% of their attempts at the edge of the box (and the conversion rate for penalties are almost 80%)

xG has ruined me in a similar way.

Player misses a chance that was realistically 0.30 xG or thereabouts, someone says "he should have scored".

Hahaha exactly this! And the problem is that the few times teams get caught out simply solidifies that opinion, so that it becomes 'no team should EVER play out'. I've given up trying to explain the benefits.

My father in law hates football and he always mentions how football is the only sport where players miss the target more than other sports. Thinks they're less skilled because of this

Lad I took to the game last friday is adament that Amad is shit, and spent the whole game saying how shit he is - was a bit much.

Imagine how hard it would be for snooker, darts players or golfers to hit the target as part of a team game, one where there was one hole/board at either end of the pitch and they had to pass the ball/dart and could be challenged while going for the target.

"Littler sprinting through to the ockie, he's just stopped to take aim with Michael Var Gerwin guarding the board and he's just been cleaned out by Gerwin Price, that's going to hurt in the morning, referee says "one hundred and no fooooullllll" and Price is away he throws the dart out to Adrian Lewis on the wing, Lewis is sprinting away from John Nicholson on the break...."

During the Euros me and my uncle agreed that 4-4-2 is the best football formation by far.

Some people who aren't as tactically astute as us might think that's stupid.

Got a friend who is not Italian and not named Thomas Tuchel who is just obsessed with 5 at the back. Every FM save he uses it. Every time a team playing with 4 makes a mistake he mentions it. Every time a team that actually uses it and doesn't perform well is "not implementing it the right way". I think he's taking the piss but he's been vocal about it for about 3-4 years now. He was over the moon when the Dutch national team adopted it despite playing horrendous football and switching back to 433.

My Leicester supporting uncle thinks Martinez is utter shite and he wouldn't take him at Leicester.

From United friends:
  • Wanting DDG back because Onana errors
  • Insisting that [manager] will get top results if we simply give more time
  • Any reference to SAF’s early United years as an argument against sacking managers today
  • Putting Rashford in fantasy lineup
  • Calling me crazy for wanting to sell DDG in 2020 and Rashford in 2021
  • “it’s not the owners”
  • “Why you don’t support England if you support an English club”
  • The many times where they simply don’t know ball
Liverpool friends:
  • Seriously believing Slot is gonna be as successful as Klopp this year
  • “Klopp is top 3 PL manager in history”
  • Believing Liverpool are more popular and famous than United around the world
  • Nunez gonna be world class
That one friend who likes City:
  • “Manchester is blue”
Spurs friends:
  • *deciding to become Spurs fans when given the choice as an American to support any actual respectable club with some history of success*
General footy friends:
  • “Manchester United are like the NY Yankees” such a poor comparison

My brother thinks Lisandro Martinez is one of the worst cb’s in the league. Primarily because he’s too short. Won’t let it go.

True five at the back has never been tried.

Only thing I can add to this is my blue mate who downright refuses to believe any wrongdoing by the owners re finances at City. The loon completely forgets I went to many home and away games with him in the early 90s when they were still at Maine Road. Faithful fans yes...............................fill their ground every week?............................more chance of Niall Quinn and his amazing disco pants scoring many hat-tricks at Old Trafford.

Every other game my uncle will message in the group chat that we need to put Rashford up front because defenders don't like pace.

I know a couple of Liverpool fans who often come out with these belters:

Points totals are a better measurement of a team/manager's quality than the trophies they won (to try to argue that Klopp was better than Fergie).

Individual awards, such as Player of the Month, is the best metric to use when comparing the quality of two players (to try to argue that Gerrard was better than Scholes).
